How I Nearly burnt my place down...

We were running errands this weekend and I was running a load up into our apartment while DH waited in the car.

I came in, and smelled something. At first I thought it smelled yummy, like ham or something. Then I wondered why I could smell it in my apartment, normally I can't smell other peoples cooking. Then I thought maybe DH had thrown something in the oven before we left, but the oven was cold.

I soon realized it didn't really smell like ham, it smelled like burning wood. Not only that, but it was def coming from MY KITCHEN!

I followed my nose to the dishwasher, and saw smoke pouring out. I opened it up and there was a wooden spoon sitting on the element, smoldering! It is all black and ruined.

I never realized they dishwashers got that hot!

I think I will be more careful in the future.

not to "one-up" you or anything...but if you think that's bad...try finding the lid to some plastic gladware on that element...

that was the last time I put tupperware stuff in that dishwasher!

That's why I always set my dishwasher to "cool dry".

glad you came home and nothing serious happened. I don't run any appliances when I am sleeping or not home. It is an obssession with me I'm too afraid.

This is the reason we have tons of gladware with no tops. All of our tops slip through and land on the heating element.


You'd think that maybe we wouldn't put them in the dishwasher anymore...

for some reason we haven't caught on yet. The idea of handwashing gladware sketches me out.

Of course so does the idea of my apartment burning down.

Maybe I need to re-think my dishwashing methods.
