How far do you travel to camp at FW.

I am considering this trip next year pulling a 29' Jayco Travel Trailer. www.randmcnally.com says our trip is 1587 miles from Minnesota to Orlando..... am I nuts for considering this? My kids are 11 and 8, so this is something I would like to do sooner than later.

Question... how is the towing through the mountains in Tennessee and such?

Thanks.

Duds

900 miles give or take and we stay in Jax/St. Augustine the day before so the drive to check-in gets us there early.

What are you pulling with?

We are 901 miles from the Fort. We usually leave at 4:00 in the afternoon and travel all night with a mandatory stop at a Cracker Barrel for breakfast and arrive around 1100 the next day.

We will be traveling down in Mid September, we plan on leaving PA between 4-6pm and driving through the night. I work nights so it should be easy for me. Any tips on traveling over night on such a long ride?

We are just over 400 miles. We take two days. We leave after work, drive about half way to Madison, FL and stay at Jellystone campground. Next morning we finish the trip, arriving at the Fort around noon. We take our time and stop to eat and walk the dogs. It's a vacation - no rushing allowed! :goodvibes

Easy towing except for west of Chattanooga on I-24. Long hill down but not that bad.

About 420 for us, from just south of Atlanta. We leave at 6am, takes about 8 hours with fuel stops and lunch, this puts us there around 2pm. A head of the rust hour traffic on I-4, most of the time.:3dglasses

We usually have things packed the day before so we aren't tired from that and we drink lots of coffee:) . It works really well for us since we don't require alot of sleep.Traffic is much lighter at night on 95.
Our DS sleeps 8-9 hrs, which makes the trip much more pleasant.(we have a motor home). We both stay up and talk ,and if we get really tired we pull off at a rest area for about an hr nap. There is a cracker barrel in Jacksonville and we stop there for breakfast, this gives us a much needed break.
The worst part is I-4 traffic is always heavy, and being tired makes this part of the trip really long.We always make sure we stop and walk around for a few minutes just to stretch our legs and wake up whenever we start feeling sleepy. We would rather take a little longer than have an accident.
Drive safely, enjoy the light traffic and have fun!

according to Mapquest, 370.86 miles, 5 hours, 44 minutes. *sigh*.... Hurry *up* December!!

985 miles door to door. Going down in about 3 weeks Sept 21-29th. Just bought a pop up this year and looking forward to staying at FW for the first time.

DON'T GO THROUGH ATLANTA. :scared1: I'm not sure how you will make your way down but once you get to I-65 take it all the way south to Montgomery, AL. Take I-85 east about 6 miles to US-231 south and take it all the way south to I-10. US-231 is a four lane 65mph road that goes by only two big towns ( other then Montgomery ). It is very scenic and going this way ( I-65 and US-231) there are absolutely NO mountains. This is the way we go to FW with our 39' motorhome pulling our 7x10 enclosed trailer with the golf cart inside. For us, using this route and not going through Atlanta only adds 100 miles to the trip and staying away from Atlanta is worth the extra 2 hours. You can also take another scenic route down to Ocala by getting off I-10 at US-19 ( exit 225 off I-10 ) taking that to ALT-US-27 at Chiefland, FL over to I-75. This too is a four lane 65MPH road that has little or no traffic most any time of day. Don't forget to jump on the Turnpike and then take the Western Way ( Route 429 ) toll road into the west side of WDW. Once again, a road with little traffic. ( Unless everyone has finally discovered the secret.:scratchin )

Congratulations. I'd rather stay at the Fort than their best rooms. Even if they were priced the same.:thumbsup2

I'm the opposite, I HATE, HATE, HATE 231. I would much rather go through Atlanta. However, being relatively close to Atlanta, I can time my trip to run through there at 10:00 at night. No problems at all!!! I leave Huntsville/Madison at 5pm CT and that puts me through Birmingham by 7pm and through Atlanta by 10pm ET, then I stop somewhere before Macon, then head out bright and early the next morning, getting to Ft. Wilderness/Disney right around 1:30 pm ET

1031 miles from nj. were going in feb for a week then off to daytona for the race. were staying at the fort for the first time and haulin my 5th wheel only on its second longest trip (we went to bristol for that race a few weeks ago) but im smart :rolleyes1 im flying the DH down with the kids ill drive all by myself and meet them there:) ill stop at a walmart whenever i get get tired. the plus side never hearing "are we there yet" as im going over the delaware memorial bridge cant wait till feb:thumbsup2

probably the distance is about 1050 miles from our home in NJ but we only drive as far as Lorton, Virginia and then from Sanford to Orlando. We love to take the Amtrak auto train and have our own car. Plus you don't have to pack for accessing stuff at hotels or changing from a rental car if we flew. Haven't done this in a few years.....

TIME FOR TRIP PLANNING !!

1104 miles door to pad, or 1,457,221 dashed lane lines, 6 on ramps, 5 construction zones and 3 speed traps:rotfl2:
I never remember the trip down, it's always a blur. We're always planning our next trip on the way home. It helps with the depression.:sad1:

STAY AWAKE!:rotfl2:
Seriously, if you're not accostumed(sp.?) to long time night driving, Interstate 95 can lull you to sleep past Richmond,VA and especially in South Carolina. Every trip we've taken, amazes me on how many fresh crash sites you see. The ones that cross into the left median are usually the sleepers.:cloud9:
Be carefull and make sure someone competent stays up with you.

Isn't that what cruise control is for?? :rolleyes1 :joker:

I know all about driving while tired. I am staying up late tonight so I can sleep in. Then we will be off....Woo Hoo look out here we come...

If I get too tired a stop over and an hour or two of rest will do good...

I could always let my DD16 practice for her license!! :crazy2: :crazy2:

1570 miles for us here is Maine to travel to Fort Wilderness, always much better when you have 2 drivers but I let DH do the driving and we take a lot of breaks for the dog. Seems like he has marked every tree at every rest stop.
