how early to get to airport?

I have never seen airports as insane as Vancouver and Toronto. I truly would get there 3 hrs ahead if you have to clear US customs in Canada. Even the line up to check your bag if you do online checkin can get scary. Last time we only did carryons for this reason (a three week trip to Hawaii with only 4 carryons and we did fine!) Security. Eek. Each time they add a new level of checking (shoes off!) there is a new bottleneck (wear slip on/off shoes). We usually have to connect through these major airports and the 1.5 hrs they allow is barely enough even though you bypass some of the main terminal stuff in YVR with the inside passage. I've been through the whole process in 15 minutes and I have been through the whole process in 4 hours. Occasionally, I have seen them call forward people who are trying to catch particular flights, but you can't count on it.

We prefer to stay at airport hotels (inside the terminal) to make the often early morning departures tolerable.

Online Check in does bnot seem to save any time at YYZ

U.S. Customs opens at 5am -- no earlier and the lines are huge first thing in the morning so you will be doing a lot of waiting in line.
Line up to check in
Line up for customs
Line for food?
Line up to board
We are always at check in 3 hours prior to flight and twice we have nearly missed a flight because U.S. customs computers were down and the line stops moving no one is processed. No announcements are made to explain. We had to find an airport employee with a walkie talkie to find out what was happening. I really don't like Pearson airport, Buffalo is much easier.

Hope you have a wonderful holiday with no problems!
