How early do you get in line for the Candlelight Processional?

For example, if we want to see the 5:00 show, what time should we plan to be in line if we hope to get in? We don't have the dinner package and we will be there December 2 and 3. I'm shooting for the first show the first night because we have small children. If we don't get in, I can still try for the second night. If we aren't in the theater, can we still hear what is going on?

We went about this time frame and never waited inline for the CP, once they let the dinner folks in, then the line up folks there were always empty seats and we always got in when we wanted to. Sure not up front but still a great seat to see what we wanted.
The first night we sat in by the fountian in front of the american pavillion. We could hear all just fine- this is good if the kids are restless cause they can still run around a little in that area.

WE just loved the CP, really put us in a special christmas mood! I would have watched it every night of the trip, but there are just too many fun things to do that time of year.
