How does vandalism and looting accomplish anything???

Who said anything about challenge them when they are not acting out of line? Posters have been saying to never challenge them and just report the incident later. It's not about challengeing the police just to be a jerk but the idea that you should never challenge police even when they are doing something against your rights, is not a good thing.

There are many on this thread that act as though a police stopping them is in and of itself a violation of their rights. These are the people that would cop an attitude with a police officer based on their own prejudices, whether the officer is doing anything wrong or not.

Those people deserve whatever they get, IMO.

Lol, it IS a violation of there rights. Police don't get to stop and just start questioning people without cause. You can't simply stop me walking and ask me where I'm going for no good reason.

Now of course let's define "challenge". Would I get out of my car swinging at a cop? No, of course not. If I'm told to leave a mcdonalds I have the full right of being there? Yes, I'm asking why?

Sure, you can ask them why, and they don't have to give you a reason, if they don't want to. You can choose to challenge them, and you might well end up in jail, and if you're fine with that, I certainly am.

Very simple. Just because you are a cop does not make one GOD. That's the entire point behind the constitution. Cops do not get to do what they want, when they want just because they are wearing a badge.

Yes, you want to stop me and ask me question, you have to tell me why.
You pull me over or stop me in my car? Yes, I get to question that?

No, I dont have to let you in my house without a search warrant.

I have no problem accepting the consequences.

Absolutely. I still don't approve of the way Boston PD handled the city wide search after the bombing. I saw them on YOUTUBE escorting people from there homes at gunpoint. They can ask to search my home and in that situation I'd probably allow it, but in the true sense I can say no. I've thought for years the police are becoming to militarized.

If the police believe you're doing something wrong, or they suspect you of a crime, they have every right to stop you. You may not agree that they do, but they do.

And if you're walking down the middle of the street, you're breaking the law, and they most certainly can ask you where you're going and why you're walking down the middle of the street.

I've always heard to ask "am I under arrest" if no then I don't consent to this conversation.

Lol, people should stop worrying about "too much government" in there lives. We are pretty much giving them the key to control our lives

THEYHave to tell you!! If they suspect me of a crime, they have to say "we'd like to discuss XYZ with you. Or if they ask me where I'm going, I get to say Why?

If they arrest you, they have to tell you why. You would really let cops take you to jail without a peep?

Ok, this is a serious question, I don't know the answer. Do we still have Miranda rights? I know law officials were trying to do away with it. Is it still in effect?

Of course if they arrest you, they have to tell you why. But if you're breaking the law, they can certainly stop you and ask you where you're going and why you're breaking the law.

Now, you can certainly get nasty with them, and tell them they have no right to stop you and ask you questions, but at that point, YOU have caused the situation to escalate. And that's on you, not on them.

If you believe you've done nothing wrong, why not just answer their questions rather than cop an attitude?

Because I don't have to answer their questions. And I can do that without "coping an attitude". The police want to ask me questions, I can ask some myself. They want to haul me in, I'm not saying anything until I have a lawyer. That's my right.

Absolutely, you can refuse to answer without an attorney, and you can do it without copping an attitude. Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with a police officer asking me where I'm going, but that's me.

But that doesn't seem to be what eliza and some others on this thread are advocating for - they're all about challenging the police; not in order to preserve their rights, but just to be difficult and escalate the situation.

And I'm not some bleeding heart liberal, I'm just someone that knows my rights. I think anyone who loots should be thrown in jail for as long as possible. Nothing makes looting okay. But, I also don't advocate shooting a looter on sight. I'm not the judge & jury. We have a system that works most of the time.

Nothing will be done to the looters - the "good" people of Ferguson and the U.S. Justice Department won't allow it.

Because very simply. people I love and respected fought and died for my right to be free of gestapo tactics.

In the US a person is presumed INNOCENT until proven otherwise. So if I've done nothing wrong, the assumption must ALWAYS, ALWAYS be that until you have proof or probable cause that it is other wise. I AM INNOCENT.

That means you do not have the right to "seize" or "search" or unlawfully detain me.

Now I am not going to escalate the situation but I am always going to ask, "is there a problem". If the officer says "no problem" than no I am not telling you my name, no I am not showing you id. In this country I get to walk down the street without id or telling my name to anyone be they, doctor, lawyer, indian chief or a cop.

If you think I am involved in some thing illegal, than you tell me what the problem is and we discuss.

This story has made me so angry. The media is making a bad situation worse. The facts of the story seem to be missing. What really happened??? What I saw was a city being burned and robbed. The excuse being a young black male who was unarmed was shot by the police. Now we have people all over the country coming to march in protest. For a story we have such limited information on. Crazy!! I don't know why anyone would go into law enforcement. Not in the times we are living in. No way! Kids are disrespectful and act like the world owes them something. You can thank the lack of parenting for that one. Race has nothing to do with it. Bad kids doing bad things!!! Teach your kids respect, good work ethics, stay in school. The world owes you nothing!

no I'm not. how the heck is questioning the cops "being difficult"??

I think I said a few post above that I am perfectly capable of asking a question without escalating the situation.

So what? They can do that if they want. You would answer the questions, I wouldn't but I'd still be respectful. Others may not be as respectful. That's their choice. The world isn't perfect, and how we respond to it depends on our life experiences. I'm a white old lady living in the suburbs. The odds of me having a run-in with the cops are pretty low. But I can't know what it's like having cops give me grief just because of the color of my skin, because it has never happened to me.

Does this happen to you often?
