I should also add that in many cases, the larger media doesn't pay attention to stories like these. Sometimes they catch hold and changes happen. Often, they don't. Riots don't get ignored. Yes, it may be the bad kind of attention, but it's attention. In other words, it accomplishes drawing attention to something horrible that is too often overlooked.
Put it another way: would people be writing about this here if there hadn't been riots?
The shame is, of course, that people who are also trapped in difficult circumstances become the primary victims of rioting. The problems are systemic, not the fault of local shopkeepers, who bear the brunt of the theft and violence.
Finally, using the word "animals" to describe this situation is incendiary and worrisome, at best.
