How does vandalism and looting accomplish anything???

Some people are just angry, and that anger becomes destructive. People who feel hopeless aren't always rational.

Others are taking advantage of a situation--they're criminals and happy to take what they can get.

I will not tell a people that have had it with the police and have reached their boiling point, NOT to react or how to react!!! FYI, don't listen to the media about what is going on...he did NOT wrestle with the police, push the police or try and grab his gun! There were eye witnesses that saw what happened... multiple. Just search #ripmikemike on twitter ... this happened in a very crowded apartment complex, with many watching.
They are rioting business that profit from them and profile them EVERY DAY. Burned the QuikTrip down because they said "ok, maybe he stole a piece of candy" as this somehow justifies him being executed while his hands were in the air.

If you don't know what these communities have to face DAILY, I don't think you are in a place to judge. Some people are MLK Jr's. some are Malcolm X's ... if you don't live there, you don't know what they are facing.

Do you think anyone is going to stand up in that community and say "no, he wasn't as innocent as everyone is trying to make him out to be? He was trying to wrestle the cop's gun away from him and wasn't following police orders?"

Get real.

Yes I am very much in a place to judge, in a civilzed society there is no justifucation for their actions. Trying to convince people there is, is disgusting.

We are in a society. Just because someone does something wrong doesn't give you permission to do something else wrong.

what was civilized about shooting this kid 9 times? that's disgusting

So you were there?

I have a close friend who was, actually. He posted a video on twitter and instragram which I would be happy to link you to if I thought you actually cared

I'm sorry--but that is hogwash.

Why not burn down the police station instead is the businesses of people who had NOTHING to do with it?

Do you justify looting after natural disasters? The looting and destruction of LA riots?

And yes, I can most certainly judge since you asked.

So the answer is no, you were not there. And unless the video is continuous and recorded the entirety of the events that led to the killing of that young man, your cousin's video from his POV is insufficient as stand alone evidence.

As far as the looting goes, there is no justification for that. I'm sorry that people are angry and upset but taking it out on innocent people is wrong.

I have never understood the mindset of vandalism and looting. What does that prove? If you are trying to say someone was unjustly killed, this does NOT help your cause in any way. IMO, it actually makes it more difficult to have sympathy.

And can we wait for there to be an investigation??? I am in no way giving the police a pass, there should be an investigation, but that needs to happen before we find anyone guilty, and trashing the town does nothing.

It's not to be understood. It's not the actions of people thinking rationally.

No we can't wait for an investigation because the investigation will lead to what it always leads to when police kill African Americans. No where.

That's where the anger comes from. you have over 200 years of an unjust system maiming and killing your youth. you no longer believe in the system.

I certainly don't. I know that at any time the police can kill my sons for absolutely no reason and not a dang thing will be done.

No I don't condone looting but I do not in any shape, form or fashion trust the legal system in this country.

So what you are seeing is a group of people who no longer have any thing to lose. the police will kill us when they want, any time they want and get away with it.

Not a thing has change since 1619 when the first African slaves were brought here. We are still a disposable people.

I should also add that in many cases, the larger media doesn't pay attention to stories like these. Sometimes they catch hold and changes happen. Often, they don't. Riots don't get ignored. Yes, it may be the bad kind of attention, but it's attention. In other words, it accomplishes drawing attention to something horrible that is too often overlooked.

Put it another way: would people be writing about this here if there hadn't been riots?

The shame is, of course, that people who are also trapped in difficult circumstances become the primary victims of rioting. The problems are systemic, not the fault of local shopkeepers, who bear the brunt of the theft and violence.

Finally, using the word "animals" to describe this situation is incendiary and worrisome, at best.

People who react in this way are animals, they certainly aren't acting like humans.

We'll at least we know where their irrational thoughts come from. Do you teach that to your children too?

Teach them what? To loot? No. Teach them how to interact with the cops? Definitely. Heck churches in the African American community hold classes on what to do when the cops stop you in order to not get killed. I teach them what to not say or to say to the police. I don't know any one who is black that does not teach them this. My son's know first hand that the cops don't treat them the same as their Caucasian friends.

Sorry, you have the option of pretending that this country doesn't have serious racial problems (I'm assuming you are Caucasian) I don't, I'd rather be irrational and have my kids know the reality. Now every thing is age appropriate, Do no at 6 this wasn't a conversation but yes at 20 unfortunately there are neighborhoods where they are not welcomed and will get hassled.

That is a very broad generalization.

So what exactly did you mean when you said nothing has changed since 1619? That is the most irrational thing I've seen in this thread and yes if that is the thought process you've passed on to your children you do nothing but perpetuate these kinds if situations.

Yup. There is NOTHING the police can do to this kid that would justify looting & vandalizing nearby property.
