How does vandalism and looting accomplish anything???

It's more complex than taking money from excellent schools and giving it to failing schools. Again, if the people in the Normandy school district want better schools, they have to become part of the process. Contact school board officials, their legislatures, vote... It also takes parental involvement. Make sure kids are doing schoolwork, studying, attending school, etc.

The group Beyond Housing is working with Normandy to get re-accredited.

I was speaking strictly budget. (Context is important!)

I did mention my general opinion that I disagree with cutting funding as a punishment to underperforming schools.

Yes, I realize for the individual school of Normandy HS--and schools it--money is not the only issue and unlikely to be the biggest issue. No arguments from me.

None of that is in anyway in conflict with wanting police cars to be outfitted with dashcams since their budgets come from different parts of govt and have no impact on each other.

IIRC, the cameras were provided but not the labor to install them. I know people realize there was no camera in Wilson's car but maybe a public awareness program asking for volunteers or for monetary donations towards having the cameras installed might work.

Hopefully the death of Michael Brown and the spectacle that resulted will lead to that.

In other news -- someone upthread asked about Ferguson, safety, and if it was a place you wouldn't want to be at night.

We did not see the truth with the riots apparently. Crime wise--it's occurrence is hair a smidge higher than the national crime rate.

CNN has this article today and it sounds like it was a perfectly normal and safe town.

I read another sad case (that has not been picked up by the national media). It's a similar case to Michael Brown's, but very different handling. Black police officer/non-black decedent.

A couple things jump out at me. First of all, Dillon Taylor's body is treated with respect and covered by a sheet. In Ferguson Brown's body remained in the street for hours, some of that time uncovered. Secondly (and more importantly), the entire thing was recorded by the officer's lapel camera. The family and community will eventually know for sure what happened from the officer's point of view. They know that if he was indeed unarmed it will show on the camera and that the officer will be charged.

"Taylor's aunt, Gina Thayne, said Tuesday that police know they "killed an innocent kid."

"If in fact they actually produce a tape, it will show exactly what happened," Thayne said. "It will come out eventually. It will never bring Dillon back, though.""
The family of Michael Brown does not have that same assurance that they will know for sure what happened when Michael was shot and for them the "Blue Shield" is quite real.

"Al, Jesse" "Al, Jesse""Al, Jesse"echo
What exactly does that mean?

It means that Dillon Taylor was shot by an African American policeman yet neither Al Sharpton nor Jesse Jackson has come forward to say anything about the shooting.

And what would you be saying if they did come forward to say something about the shooting? Something positive?

And what would you be saying if they did come forward to say something about the shooting? Something positive?

Yes, I would say something positive. Probably something like, " It's great to see that Al and Jesse are speaking about police shootings no matter the race of the policeman."

As would I, but that's not their m.o. It goes deeper than that though, why rush to the side of this particular p.o., they run to " alleged" victims. That's not opinion. That's documented history that some of us have been alive during.

And what would you be saying if they did come forward to say something about the shooting? Something positive?

If they came forward with the same zealousness they did with the Trayvon-Zimmerman or Brown-Wilson cases I believe The SHOCK of it would probably give me a heart attack.

Your heart is safe, never going to happen. I grew up in NY, I am well aware of Al's hate for many and his love of the spotlight. Anyone not familiar should just look up the reports of what happened in Crown Heights in 1991 and the hatred that spewed forth. Disgusting. That's just ONE example.

Last night I watched Hannity. Can't stand him ,too much like Rush, but there was a panel which included people on both sides. They all agreed that there was more racism and discrimination in the 60's and that we've come a long way. It still exists but not nearly to the same degree. The panel also agreed that Dr. King emphasized personal responsibility and that this emphasis is not being stressed by those people who have appointed themselves to lead African Americans today. The panelists said that their leaders do not stress getting educated as a way of breaking the cycle of poverty. Hannity was annoying but it really was a good show and very civil.

And what would you be saying if they did come forward to say something about the shooting? Something positive?

I would. It would demonstrate lack of bias and an actual concern that ALL men are treated equal under the law.

Not speaking shows that they don't give a darn because it doesn't suit their agenda. But I will eat crow if you can find an incident where rolls are reversed as in SLC where they gave the incident the exact same response as they give to the Trayvon's, Michael's and let us not forget the Tawana's who lie about a crime that never roll place.

So in the event you want to prove it's just a dog whistle--feel free to find those examples of Caucasian victims that Al or Jesse spoke up for.

That's not what the linked article says . . .

...chief also addressed speculation about the ethnicity of the officer who shot Taylor, saying the officer is not white. Taylor's brother, Jerrail Taylor, raised issues last week about racial profiling. He said his brother was Hispanic.

That's not what the linked article says . . .

The NYT referred to George Zimmerman as "white Hispanic" and Dillon Taylor was light skinned. If I saw him on the street where we live I'd think he was white because we don't have a large Hispanic population.
