Friends of our mine are looking at 2012. What happens if their kid is 9 at the start of the trip but turns 10 3 days into the trip? Looking more at cost of dining plan. thanks.

Your kid will be considered 9 for the entire trip. He will be considered a Disney kids for the duration of the trip and will not be switch to adult half way during the trip therefor you will pay for a child's dining plan for him for the entire trip.

Unless of course you want to upgrade him to an adult to start with. That would also mean a park ticket upgrade but some 9 year olds would be much happier eating adult meals so that is an option.

However, if the family has booked a lot of character meals, as in buffets or other all-you-care-to-eat meals, it's in the family's best interests to keep the dining plan at the child's rate. The buffet isn't restricted to adult-only areas or kid-only areas. That's something to take into consideration.
