How does DDP work with multi-night stays pieced together?

We have our first DVC stay coming up, it is technically 3 reservations:

April 13-16
April 16-17
April 17-18

I was going to contact member services and request this be a continuing reservation, they are all for the same resort and room type.

We would ideally like to add the dining plan for four of the five nights.

Is it possible to add the dining plan for 2 of the three reservations and still ask to remain in the same room throughout the stay? Any experiences with how this works would be appreciated!!

You can ask to remain in the same room, but I can't remember if it's at check-in or if you can do it beforehand. If it's before, I would still verify at check in. I do recall needing to get a new key card in the morning of a new continuing reservation in the past, but that was before magic bands and MDE on cell phones but maybe that's easier now.

Which day did you want to leave out of the DDP? The last day? If so, I would merge the first 2 reservations and leave the last one separate to avoid things getting messed up. If it's the middle one you want to skip, I would leave them alone. In that case, just make sure a helpful CM doesn't merge them for you.

The DDP is for an entire reservation and everyone on it, so with three reservations, you can do a DDP for one, two or all three.

DDP is purchased for the length of the reservation. So with that in mind you do NOT want combine all 3 reservations if you don’t want the DDP for the whole time. You can have reservations noted as “continuing” to hopefully stay in the same room.

Thanks all! We are leaving very early on our departure day so won’t be able to use any credits then, we ideally wanted to purchase 4 of the 5 nights. It sounds like we should request to combine the first two reservations and then hope we can continue in the same room for our final night reservation! This is so helpful.

Just be aware that years ago, the stopped allowing people to do this if all reservations were on the same membership for the same room type, and with the same guests.

People were booking indivual reservations so they could do DDP every other day and such.

Not saying it won’t work, but I’d at least be okay with having to move room or add it for the last night IF that should happen.

We did something similar this past fall. We had our first night as a separate reservation, then 6 more nights in the same room size/type. Member services let me add the ddp to the first night but they would not mark the 2 reservations as continuing, since they were on the same membership. Basically said if you want them continuing, we have to combine them. Which defeats the purpose of the 1 night ddp.

This is not an issue if reservations are booked on separate memberships. We did check with the front desk when we arrived and they already had us set up to stay in the same room. But MS wouldn’t even request it beforehand if we wanted to keep them separate for ddp purposes. So it’s a possible trade off but I’d say most likely they want to keep you in the same room for everyone’s convenience. But no guarantee.

I have two 3 night stays booked in same room type with 2 different membership numbers. I already had DVC mark them as continuous stay so we don't have to change rooms but no guarantee we won't have to change rooms. In this case would we be able to get the DDP just for the first 3 nights? And if so when would we need to use all of the credits by?

You should be able to since it's different membership numbers and different reservations, as long as they are not combined... you would have to use the dining credits by midnight on your first checkout day if you buy the DDP for the first stay. However, the mug will still work until you leave.

Separate memberships is fine because there is no way for them to actually combine the reservations. The only option is to mark them continuous. It’s only an issue if the reservations are on the same membership. There is no reason to mark them continuous on the same membership because they can/will just combine them.
