How do you think this should go? Air B & B guests suing host because her disability triggered them

I am not clicking on the link but I did read about this. Since I don't know all the details I am not going to immediately jump on the guests. So far, it does sound like they are being unreasonable and should have stayed in a hotel. We'll see if more information is revealed.

I don't think a hotel would have made anything differently. I don't know the full story either having limited information but if someone is upset at the idea of being around someone with an illness or disability it's a frame of mind they are under such that any encounter they have with someone would bring that to light. What if an assessable room was all that was available to the guests if they were at a hotel, you'd think their claim would be the same, the whole "disability aid" thing although I must say I'm confused at the “they do not press anything disability-related” comment they supposedly said to the host.

A question I would have is has the host had other guests and what were their impressions of it. If there's history of great interactions the guests are likely just on the extreme side of discriminatory bias and probably aren't pleasant people to be around in any fashion.

Can you summarize what happened? The video is very vague and doesn't explain anything and the article is behind a paywall. What is the story?

I will wait to form an opinion until I hear both sides of this story............likely will turn into one of those 'he said/she said" things. Posting a 17 minute video on YouTube by the owner complaining about the apparent situation isn't the way I would have gone about trying to resolve whatever disagreement they seemed to have.

Many people are good but many people are often completely awful and may people think people who don't slide into their version of ideal are icky & at fault.

I would also love to know the name of the guests

If the links are dead here is a copy paste from NewsNCR - I deleted the businesses name and put in (--- - & -) because we can connect the dots & I assume their name is why things were deleted

I've read this like 3 times and I still don't know what the story is. This has to be one of the worst written articles I've ever read.

Was this article translated? If not, it is about the worst writing I think I have run into.

Really? I figure it's just verbatim and just skipped using the commonly used "sic" to identify it as such. My paraphrase is:

Person with Huntington's rented a portion of her place to a couple who are the renters through an intermediary business that matches.

The couple who rented recognized this was a disabled person's home due to the placement of the doorbell (presumably wheelchair height).

The couple immediately complained that the fact a disabled person was also in the space was not disclosed citing that everything in the home was a handicapped specialized disability aid (wonder how offended they are in public restrooms?)

The business told the handicapped person to vacate her home because the renters were 'triggered' by her disability instead of helping the renters find an alternative place to stay.

The lawsuit seems to be over the fact that disabled person renting didn't disclose the nature of her disabled state to the renters ahead of time so they could deselect based on her intolerable existence & also because the business in between isn't pressuring property owners hard enough to disclose disabilities so that unsuspecting renters aren't forced to endure the presence of disabled people. You know, like they should come with warning labels.

This story has me mostly wondering how disabled people are treated when traveling in other parts of the world, as in, what is this story really saying about how businesses treat disability?

I mean, when you choose to open your home to strangers in the hopes of making money, you subject yourself to all kinds of people. The entire idea of home sharing is so icky to me and I can't imagine anyone who values their personal space and privacy would ever do this in the first place. You open yourself up to absolutely all kinds of crazy situations, which this sounds like. It's a risk you take.

That said, these tourists sound absolutely unhinged and if they are TRULY suing this woman ONLY because she has a disability, that is the dumbest thing I've ever read. However, it SOUNDS like they were worried that she may have a contagious illness and when she wouldn't disclose her disability, they got freaked out. Apparently she may have had some visible medical equipment around, etc. I can sort of understand not wanting to share a space with someone who was potentially sick or who may require medical attention while you are there on vacation.

I don't know the whole story, so I can't just automatically side with either party here. I suppose the judge in this case will be the one to decide how this goes.

I do know that NONE of these home sharing companies have the backs of either the owners OR the guests and I predict this entire industry will crumble eventually due to lawsuits of this nature. Something awful is eventually going to happen and it will be game over.

Stay in hotels, people.

Agreed that is all but gibberish. But at one one point it says that she’d only see them to hand over the keys (as would happen if you rent your own space) but then says she was (or was supposed to) be also staying in the same space. Seems like something is missing from her story (and I saw an earlier article saying the same thin, so I don’t think it’s the fault of the article’s gibberish.

The main difference between VRBO and airB&B is that you are renting out the entire house to the renters. Have used VRBO several times and that has ALWAYS been the case. You interact with the owner (or perhaps some management company to get the keys/sign paperwork etc.) but they are NOT living there while you are around. Have never used AirB&B, but as I understand how that works, someone is renting out a portion of their home while still living there. Depending on how the home is configured, there apparently may be some common areas everyone shares. Perhaps that practice is more common outside of the USA, but would never rent someplace where you have to share part of the accommodations.

The whole situation makes NO sense to me from the poorly written article and I still have no idea what someone means when they say they were 'triggered' by the accommodations. Sounds like a vague way of saying something other then they were uncomfortable being around a person with a disability.

Not always. I’ve done AirBnb a couple of times (for extend month or longer stays - twice when I moved to a new country and wanted to be able to take some time to find somewhere to rent longer term) and always had the entire apartment I was renting (both in the US and in Europe).
