I'm one of those people that takes pictures until the memory card gets full. I have hundreds of photos on my card now....it's full  . What's the best way to store them? I haven't developed any pics since my APS camera stopped working properly several years ago. I still have probably 1/2 dozen rolls that haven't been developed still! I need to get these pic OFF my memory card and stored somewhere safe. :confused3 Help me out!

I burn them to DVD and back them to a portable hard drive that's kept in another location.

I move them onto my computer. I used to be really good and do it after each trip but I got lazy.

1 folder per each trip. Name the folder with the trip and the date.

Photos of animals go in an animal folder, family goes in a family folder etc...

I do back them up. You can burn them onto a CD if you want to be extra safe.

I'm actually getting ready to take all my negatives into Target and get them put on CD. Then I'll put my photos on my computer.

Likewise, except first to PC, then I use two portable hardrives, one I leave by the PC for convenience, the other in a different location.

I was going to copy them to my PC but didn't think that would be safe. I actually did do this with the first memory card but I know they could be lost if something were to go wrong with the PC. What does it cost to have a CD/DVD made as I can't do it myself? What do ya do, take the memory card to the store and drop it off or can ya wait while it's done? Thanks, guys, for the help! I'm completely ignorant about this part.

Actually CDs/DVDs aren't a great way of safeguarding your photos, unless you make several copies of each photo, since CDs/DVDs burned using standard, non-commercial optical storage burners don't have a very long life. Even commercial CDs/DVDs aren't expected to last decades.

If you have a CD-RW (aka a CD-Burner) you can burn them yourself. If your computer is 4 years old or newer it should have one standard.

But yes, you can take your card to the store and have them do it for you.

You can put them online too. Epson and Kodak have online photo albums.

I have my 'great' photos printed at a digital lab and scrapbook them.

The files I transfer to my computer. Every so often I burn back up disks, one for our fire safe and one I send to my moms. I also have 2 external hard drives that I back up information to.

I also have online back up that I use for very special photographs.

I usually download them to my computer, and have folders for each year, then the month & whatever the activity is, plus a misc folder for each month. Every so often I back the pics up on a portable hard drive. I haven't burned them to cd in awhile.

Then what would YOU recommend, bicker? :confused3

The recommendation I've gotten is back-up essential data to magnetic tape. Barring demagnetization, it is supposed to safeguard data better than optical storage. That jives with what I see the IT folks doing at work, back-ups go on tape.

I go get them printed and then put on a CD rom at the same time.
