How do you say YUM in Canadian? 7 Days on DxDP w/ pix! *COMPLETED 3/21*

Love your take on CRT. I was thinking of having a CRT dinner during our upcoming trip; however, all of my teen boys(17's) simply would not give in.:confused3 They claim that CRT is going to fill with princess-wanna-be's. How can I change their minds? Pretty princesses CM's???maybe :rolleyes1

I say save some Splash Mountain Fastpasses to give them and give them some $$ for Cosmic Rays and say SEE YA! Seriously, they can eat chicken nuggets. You can have a wonderful 3 course meal and make a wish with the fairy godmother!

Maybe tell them they get swords to play with? Tell them Cindy is a hottie? :confused3

And I resent that "princess-wanna-be" comment! Who's a princess-wanna-be? The cute little girls wearing dresses? Cinderella herself? The CMs certainly aren't. They're dressed like servant people! But if anyone's a princess-wanna-be it's me! I'll admit it. ;)

We chose to eat at Akershus last month instead of CRT (breakfast). And although DD and I enjoyed the experience I would not go back for the food. We will probably try CRT next time though just for the castly experience.

Great report so far!

OMG...Hollywood Brown Derby is next!!!
Tee hee hee ... I've got the giggles and am excited already - it's one of my favourites :)
(but don't tell anyone...I used to work at Le Cellier, so that should be my favourite...but there is something about Brown Derby!!)

Can't wait for more photos!!

great review! :) Im canadian and we simply say... yum.. teehee We went to the same places as you guys and glad you guys had fun! Im doing a grad disney trip next year when i graduate..then a Disney wedding the following year:)... Oh and the other mouse's name is Suzie :)

Moving right along, I'll begin this installment with our first breakfast at our resort. If you're staying at the POFQ or are curious, we did order some variety (though I mainly ordered Mickey waffles, Brittany ordered different stuff) of offerings so it's a good mix. We ate breakfast here most days, so I'll add them in with other major meals. I won't waste y'alls precious time with just Sassagoula updates! (Even though we started a joke where we would be like, "Ready for Sassagoula?" And the other would say, "Sassagoula me baby!" We're weird)

Since Hollywood Studios is, IMHO, the weakest when it comes to food choices, we decided to eat breakfast at our resort.

DSCF0146.jpg

Here's a picture of the sign outside the restaurant in case you're curious about the hours of Sassagoula and other offerings:

DSCF0147.jpg

Once again, Brittany and I made sure we got our two drinks with breakfast, even if it was too much. One nice thing about this QS place (I'm not sure about other resorts but I'm sure they're similar) is that you can have any two bottled beverages in the fridges. So basically you can have a full size OJ and a water bottle to take to parks. Or you can get a Fuze and a apple juice. I think it's a nice deal.

Here's Brittany's plate. She ordered the French Toast platter, which consisted of one slice of french toast, eggs, and bacon. She got an apple juice and a milk to drink.

DSCF0331.jpg

I ordered Mickey waffle (it's the biggie size variety) with fruit. I got a bottled water and an OJ.

DSCF0330.jpg

We were always happy with our breakfast's here. Let me say though, this place was PACKED every morning. I mean, couldn't find a table packed. We even made it for rope drop so it was pretty early too. I don't know why it was so busy, I think Mardi Gras had something to do with it. We were happy when we were able to get a seat outside, because it wasn't as noisy as it was inside.

This meal was nice. The french toast is underwhelming (a little overdone, and crunchy on the crust. Very thin too). The eggs are good (one of the few places I could eat the eggs), and Brittany loved the bacon. The Mickey waffle is perfect as always. The fruit on top is basically hot strawberries, which I liked. I wouldn't have gotten it if it was like a fruit topping (like pie filling) that can come on most waffles with fruit.

Basically it was a good start to our Hollywood Studios day.

After riding TSM for the first time (it was AWESOME) and several other adventures, we headed over to the Hollywood Brown Derby for our 11:40am lunch reservation. *Note: See the perfect, clear sky? Yeah, that was our weather all 8 days! It never rained a drop. PERFECTION.

DSCF0344.jpg

Our waitress Christena (yes, that's how it's spelled) sat us in a lovely booth which was a surprise, because they never sit two people in a booth at WDW. We usually get crammed in some little space or sat inches away from a four seater in a tiny space they found. When we were seated, we noticed that the place was sort of empty, but started to fill up as our lunch progressed.

Brittany ordered a Sprite and I got *shocker* Cherry Coke. If you like Cherry Coke (which I only really drink when at Disney), this was the best I had. Plus I love when they put cherries on the top. Here's a pic. Why not?

DSCF0345.jpg

Shortly after that we got our bread.

DSCF0346.jpg

These were hot and yummy. They had a nice crispy outside.

For apps, Brittany ordered a Pumpkin bisque that is seasonal and is not on allears.net. Let me say that this is by far my worst pic, because the lighting in here is awful for foodie shots. I tried really hard to get a non-blurry one but after 5 or 6 tries Brittany was like, "Let me eat it already!" :rolleyes1

DSCF0351.jpg

Brittany LOVED this. I didn't try it, because I don't like pumpkin (or many bisques in general). She got all the way to the bottom of the bowl.

Though she loves her soup, she still wished she ordered MY app...

The Coconut fried shrimp! On allears.net: Coconut Fried Shrimp with Asian pear-chili sambal and citrus soy dipping sauce.

DSCF0348.jpg

The only thing not to like about this dish is that they only give you two! Seriously, these are fantastic shrimp. I don't even like coconut shrimp usually. But this is a perfect hint of sweet coconut with a tender shrimp inside. Brittany loved her one bite I gave her! My shrimps I say! :snooty:

Our entrees came around next. Brittany ordered the BBQ chicken. Allears.net: Honey Barbecue Glazed Breast of Chicken with Romaine Hearts tossed in Green Goddess Dressing, and peppered citrus.
Side-note: On our receipt this says: BBQ Chicken Goddess. YUM!

DSCF0354.jpg

This was okay. I had a bite, and thought the chicken was a little weird tasting. Like the texture was a little mushy if that makes sense. All the "stuff" around it is very good though.

I ordered the famous cobb salad, sans bacon. Allears.net: Our Famous Brown Derby Cobb Salad with finely chopped greens, turkey breast, egg, bacon (mine had no bacon), tomatoes, crumbled bleu cheese, avocado, chives and Cobb dressing

DSCF0353.jpg

I love when they come over and mix it up for you. I don't know why this is so awesome, but it just is! All the ingredients are so finely chopped that every bite is a plethora of yumminess on your tongue. I forgot that I don't like avocado when I got a rather large bit of it in one bite. It didn't ruin it for me. Next time I might try it without it though. (Our waitress said they can take anything out of the salad).

Dessert... Usually I love dessert but this one was... meh. I know, tragic right?

Brittany was debating between the chocolate cake, creme brulee and this banana dessert. Our waitress said that the banana dessert was her favorite so Brittany ordered. Let me just say, since I'm on a soapbox here anyway, that I don't understand people who ask waiters for their opinion on what food is best. I mean, people have different tastes so why are you going to trust some stranger's idea of what is good? I actually trust it more when they say, "It's our most popular dish" than when someone says, "It's MY favorite dish." I know what I like, so I I decide based on that and my experience. Despite wanting chocolate, she ordered this banana dessert because Christena LOVES it. :confused3
Allears.net: Banana White Chocolate Toffee Tower on cocoa almond cookie and bananas "foster"

DSCF0356.jpg

I didn't get this dessert. The best parts (according to Brittany and me) is the almond cookie thing sticking out of the top and the chocolate cookie crust at the bottom. The "filling" in the middle (the top layer is whipped cream) tastes like pure banana a la "Runts," not-real-banana-just-banana-flavor flavor. Not good. The sauce in the bottom is supposed to be the "foster" part but it tasted like pure rum. :headache: I don't get it. Overall I give this dessert a score of meh.

My dessert went slightly, but not much, better.

I ordered the Grapefruit cake. Allears.net: Grapefruit Cake - A Brown Derby Original! Light Layers of Yellow Cake with fresh Grapefruit Cream Cheese Icing

DSCF0355.jpg

Now, the moment I made the Brown Derby ressie, my mom raved on and on about this cake. She LOVES it. (She also likes grapefruit, this should have clued me in). Since it was an original and it's famous, yadda yadda, I tried this. Let me say, unless you like the bitterness that is grapefruit taste, don't order this. I don't get it. I wanted a light sweetness mixed with the grapefruit taste. The cake was even a little dry. I am, however, glad that I tried this once, and now never need to order it again!

Though you may not know it from what I just said about our desserts, I LOVED the Brown Derby. I love the atmosphere. It's quiet. It's a gem that is the funk pool of Hollywood Studios food. I feel as though our strange dessert choices were our own fault. We wanted to branch out. You live, you learn.

For the budget folks, our meal was $83.69 before tip.

Coming up next... Mama Melrose's and Snacks: Part 1!!

Looks like a pretty filling lunch.

The chicken dish look really good though.

Thanks!

Great reviews so far - love the look of that bana dessert at Brown Derby :)

I do feel like I was jipped; however, because I only got the brownie for dessert. I must have had a brain issue that day to pick that over creme brulee. What a dork! :headache:
Don't feel bad --the WPE creme brulee is actually a prepackaged mix like you can buy in any grocery store. I have allergies and I've seen the box. Still tasty though.

That does make me feel a little better...thanks!

Thanks for your reviews and all the pictures! I'm loving it! That mac and cheese picture from WPE KILLED me. OMG, I want that so badly. Hopefully, I can convince the crew to hit WPE for lunch in April!

And I am totally on the same page as you about DHS dining and the Brown Derby. I LOOOOOVE the Cobb Salad (though I get mine without the blue cheese), especially the finely chopped effect! AND I really didn't like the grapefruit cake. It was more bitter/less sweet than I expected and, yes, really dry! We went with a group and shared a bunch of desserts. I liked the chocolate cake (though it was pretty typical) and there was one other thing that a few people liked, but I can't remember! (I am sorry to say that it MIGHT have been the banana thing....like you said, everyone has different tastes.) Overall, though, DHS food choices are seriously lacking. I'm interested to see what you thought of Mama Melrose. We have had inconsistent experiences there.

I'm really enjoying your reviews and pictures!!! I love to hear other people enjoy Wolfgang Puck Express, since it's one of our favorite places to eat at DW. Sounds like we have to same tastes in food, since the Key Lime Pie is also a favorite of mine and I really was thinking I was the only one around that didn't like the Grapefruit Cake at BD. Can't wait for more, thanks for sharing!!!:goodvibes

I know that as long as it's around, I will always to to WPE in future trips to the world. I already loved POFQ, because I love the boat rides to DTD. But now I think I'll always stay there because now I'm a boat ride away from WPE! I really HATE buses to DTD. Why are they so much longer and more annoying that other buses? Maybe that's just me.

TRUST ME, you are not the only one that does not like the Grapefruit cake. I am glad I tried it though, just so I can say I did. And the banana thing wasn't TERRIBLE. Just not as satisfying or eyes-roll-into-your-head-yummy (and we had some desserts just like that!)

I'll do Mama Melrose's sometime later today. I think you'll find that you assessment of it being "inconsistent" is right on with my experience.

Sounds likel you guys had a great time. Looking forward to reading the rest. :cheer2:

Loralie

We had a great lunch at Brown Derby, but by the time our 6:10pm ressie for Mama Melrose's rolled around, we weren't that hungry. I had read a lot of mixed reviews on here. Some people have awesome experiences, other think it's terrible. And then some, like me, found it to be mediocre at parts and good at parts, so in the end it just comes out okay.

DSCF0371.jpg

The waiting area was absolutely packed when we arrived (day before Mardi Gras and the crowds at DHS that day were no joke!). Luckily, we checked in, sat down, and were almost immediately seated. Our waiter Joyce took our drink orders. We each had some sort of soda. I find it annoying that they don't have any bread here.

For apps, Brittany was drawn to the artisan bread. I had never read anything on the DIS boards of someone loving this, but I wasn't going to rain on her parade. Allears.net: Artisan Breads and Spreads - freshly baked breads served with an arugula and chive pesto, sun-dried tomato, roasted vegetable and roasted garlic spreads.

DSCF0372.jpg

The spread on the left, she liked. She refused to try the garlic spread in the middle. She said that she wasn't interested in spreading pure garlic onto her breads, which is what she assumed it tasted like. She also seemed to like the one all the way on the right. None of the three types of bread had a strong flavor in and of itself. Brittany didn't eat anymore of the "breadstick," because she said it tasted, "Like a stick." Overall, this was basically a breadbasket with some spreads. It was a lot of food for an app, but nothing was really wow about it.

I ordered the tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. Allears.net: Mozzarella and Tomatoes - with marinated sweet onions, balsamic drizzle, extra virgin olive oil and fresh basil.

DSCF0374.jpg

Now this was again just okay. This kind of thing is actually right up my alley. But if you look closely at the picture, you'll notice little dots that are actually HUGE grains of salt. This was not necessary to me and kind of ruined this dish. The lightness of the tomatoes and mozzarella were overpowered by these sudden bursts of salt in your mouth. I mean SALT. I actually apparently got a grain of this caught in my mouth or something, and then all of sudden my whole cheek was overwhelmed with this pure salt flavor. I think the balsamic and EVOO should be enough. But no, I guess not. I wouldn't order this again if I went back, since I've had amazing tomato and mozzarella dishes elsewhere.

Next were entrees. Brittany ordered the penne alla vodka (sans the pancetta). Allears.net: Penne Alla Vodka with pancetta and sweet onion, finished with tomato basil sauce, cream, vodka and pecorino romano

DSCF0377.jpg

This was better than the apps. It was a huge bowl, and Brittany actually didn't end up eating much of it. I tasted it, and I found it to be pretty bland actually. Maybe the pancetta would have made it better? I dunno. This was okay, but you just expect more flavor from an Italian restaurant and their pastas, am I right?

I ordered the pepperoni flatbread pizza. I actually had wanted to try the wood-grilled chicken dish (listed on allears.net) that I had seen so many times on the board. It looked like something I would like a lot. However, the menu has changed since allears has been updated, so it was not on the menu when we went. :headache: My pepperoni flatbread is not on Allears. It was specifically called pepperoni flatbread on the menu, fyi. So heads up, the allears.net menu is no longer correct.

DSCF0376.jpg

This was the standout of all apps and entrees. Brittany agrees, because she also ate two slices of this. This was piping hot and tasted extremely fresh. The cheese was awesome and the huge slices of pepperoni were very yummy. We both enjoyed this a lot.

It took awhile for Joyce to come back and get our dessert orders. She was an okay waitress at first, but she seemed to ignore us and focus on bigger tables. This didn't bother us much, because we did get a pop refill, etc. The park was closing at 7 (with EMH that night), and it was obvious that they wanted to be closed as soon as they could. It was like they stopped seating people at 6:30, because right at 7, we realized the place was empty. Just an observation.

Now on to dessert. Brittany and I both ordered the Hazelnut cheesecake. Allears.net: Honey Hazelnut and Ricotta Cheesecake.

DSCF0380.jpg

This was AWESOME. The cheesecake had an amazing flavor, very rich and thick texture. The "ricotta" cheese really just makes this seem like a thick cheesecake. The hazelnut part is actually kind of hidden. If you flop off the whipped cream (which I did), there is a darker portion in the center. It is a hazelnut flavor tucked inside the cheesecake (the darker part is still cheesecake though, just with hazelnut flavor). Brittany and I both finished these and loved it. I swear it made it worth the mediocre food otherwise!

Our meal cost $77.25 before tip.

Overall, this meal was not a standout and was kind of a let-down. Brittany was excited to have Italian, and I honestly have a better meal at Olive Garden (except that dessert which was WOW). I definitely like Sci-Fi Drive-in that we went to last year better. Mama Melrose's was just okay this time around for us.

Coming up next... Snacks Galore Part 1!

love your writing style and your take on the food!!
:goodvibes

So we had 28 snacks, and I was determined to use them (see first post for complete description of stubborn-ness to do so!). On the second snack post, I'll name all 28 snacks (for you DDP researchers out there, curious how you can spend them). We used them for pop and waters, etc., so we didn't take pictures of all 28 snacks. However, we did take pics of the ones that were more than just a drink. Except I did miss one snack picture, which was the ONLY food I forgot to take a picture off. :guilty: I tried so hard to get them all.

So here are our Magic Kingdom snacks:

THIS is the famous Dole whip float!

DSCF0281.jpg

DSCF0282.jpg

Close-up of Brittany's (orange dole whip with pineapple juice):
CIMG0382.jpg

UMMM OKAY WOW! I understand why people flip over this stuff! At first when I read and saw Dole Whip pictures, I was like :confused3 . But I know better now! This is the yummiest thing ever! Brittany thought the orange would be better than the pineapple :sad2: Once again she wished she had listened to me (and my DIS knowledge) and gotten the pineapple dole whip float. I polished mine off, she couldn't finish the orange one. If you don't know, these can be bought at Aloha Isle over in Advenureland (across from Swiss Family Treehouse).

Later that day we got these right after the parade at Sleepy Hollow in Liberty Square (and yes, you can no longer get the funnel cake for a snack credit :sad1: )

Left: Rootbeer float, Right: Iced Cappuccino
DSCF0308.jpg

Brittany ate the whole Rootbeer float so she must have liked it (I actually hate floats, save the dole whip variety. I hate pop with ice cream, and I yes I've tried it.) My Iced Cappuccino actually had no ICE to it. It was like a cold coffee flavored drink (like a Starbucks Frapp drink you can buy in the bottles). I've seen pics of these before and they're usually frozen or on ice. I dunno what was up with mine but it was still cold and had a good flavor and definitely hit the spot. I downed the whole thing.

Right before the DHS Block Party parade, Brittany got a Sprite bottle and I got a frozen coke.

DSCF0357.jpg

This was a run of the mill frozen coke ICEE-type-deal and was awesome. We got these at the "Dip Site" cart that is right outside Indiana Jones. It actually advertises frozen lemonade all over the cart, but the poor guy was like, "I don't have any. They really need to change my sign." Seriously, they need to change his sign because everyone would order it and he would direct them to another cart to get it!

After DHS, Brittany and I HAD to try the beignets at POFQ (we were staying there after all!)

DSCF0384.jpg

Umm... what do I say about these? Basically they are fried dough, that is hollow, and covered in powdered sugar. The dough itself is not sweet so basically I found myself "dipping" and "filling" bites of this with sugar to give it flavor. I actually first bit into one and air literally burst out either side and made a "wheeeeezzz" noice that was HILARIOUS. Why are these filled with air? And why do people like them so much? Personally, they made a huge mess. Trust me, don't get these for breakfast because you'll have powdered sugar ALL OVER you. Get them at like 11 at night like we did and have a laugh when the air blows out!

That's all the snacks for now.

Coming up next... Akershus Storybook Princess Dining at Norway

Thanks for sharing those snacks. i didn't know that some of those drinks counted and the dole whip, which i must try on my next trip. :goodvibes

I have to disagree about the beignets - I absolutely love them, although I'll admit they are messy. I found them perfectly sweet enough and actually tipped a lot of the powdered sugar off of them as I found that too sweet.

Still, horses for courses...

Great reviews :thumbsup2
