How do you rationalize ANOTHER trip to Disney?

So, we are all lovers of the mouse. We all get it. However, we all have friends and family who DON'T. When you finally let others know that you are going on yet another trip to Disney, you get a mix of reactions. Some excited, some rolling of the eyes, some looks of disappointment, some of envy. Then all of a sudden, you get a pit in your stomach of "maybe I should have saved that money for more responsible things," "I should go explore a new place because I've been to Disney too many times, already," "maybe I have a Disney problem," etc etc. So my questions are:

Do any of you have that feeling when you book another trip to Disney? (Granted, it doesn't last!)

Also, how do you explain to those "non-Disney lovers" why you are going again? Sometimes, it can be frustrating and I can start second-guessing myself.

Thanks!

I must have different friends and family because they ask me, "When is your next trip to Disney?".

We use a budget and save for retirement first. With the money left over we budget our trip . We stay within that budget. We are CC debt free, if we weren't I would not spend thousands on any trip until that was paid off.

We just got back this weekend as well and are trying to figure out a way to go at the end of Oct. for a long weekend to take in MNSSHP and to spend more time at AKL since we didn't get to enjoy everything that resort has to offer. I'm still kicking myself for not booking the bounceback offer in our room, but DH woke up really sick our last morning and that totally threw me off.

Yup, my BIL was sick when we got there and gave it to my sister by the time we left. Being sick at Disney is horrid.

Definitely take your trip back...WDW is beautiful in Oct.

for me, i tell them Disney is the only place in the world where I see a 10 yr old boy shining out of my 67 year old husband's eyes. That's worth a whole d*mn lot to me.

And I also say "when my dad was 62, he said 'next year, I'm going to retire and the first thing I'm going to do is go to EPCOT....that was in August...he was dead before Halloween. *I* don't wait for the right time...it never comes.'

So sorry about your loss (I know it wasn't recent but still your father). My dad said something similar. He didn't get to enjoy retirement either. So I save some and travel some. I know I could save more but at the price of being fit enough to enjoy travel when I do have "enough".

thank you and I agree. A dear friend of ours died over the weekend...47yrs old...unexpectedly...just reminds me how short life is.

I don't justify anything to anyone; it's my money, I'm 64 years old, and I'll do what I dam well please.

I hate those types of reminders.:sad2: So sorry for your friend's family.

All hail the queen!

It's my money, it's my vacation time... why should I care what anyone else thinks? Seriously, do people actually spend time and mental energy worrying about 'justifying' their lives to others? Sounds like a mental illness to me.

I also price out airfare to Hawaii (my dream vacation) for the five of us and it makes Disney seem cheap! ROFL!

For most people, the frequency of their Disney trips is the perfect amount. Anyone who goes less than them doesn't get it, and anyone who goes more is crazy.

That applies to everyone's driving speed too.

The problem is in the inferred bragging about the trips. When you brag, you are showing your own insecurity. trying to make someone else think something, like it is a contest or something. Being respectful of other people's financial situations means respecting them.

LOL, you should have seen the eye-roll I got when I told a co-worker that I was going to be off after Thanksgiving for a no-kids trip. She asked where we were going and I kind of smiled and she said, "Not Disney again?!?! There are so many other places to go!" And I did justify it a bit by telling her we're doing things we can't do with the kids, like tours and shows, but I know she doesn't get it and won't ever get it. That's ok. She's going on a vacation with friends where they plan to eat too much and drink too much. I'd much rather ride a roller coaster than have an alcoholic beverage and I think it's crazy to waste money on booze, but hey, her money, her vacation, her life, right?

I can understand that, that is a very good point.

I make it a point not to discuss my personal life at work (though I will respond politely if asked), and generally only talk about vacations with friends. Heck, I invite people along most of the time! A true friend doesn't sit in judgement, they just wish you well, even if they can't go.

Some friends and family are incredulous that we still go on vacations even though dh can no longer work. What they fail to comprehend is- we saved like crazy when he was working and invested wisely. We also only go on super budget trips-what they spend in a weekend at a local amusement park we don't spend in a week in Disney/Florida.
I'm to the point where that topic has become don't ask-don't tell. It saves me a lot of grief.

We live 2 hours away and have AP's. Ours just expired and we are renewing, and will probably renew again next year. I have a almost 3 year old and almost 5 year old, and no place is as perfect as Disney. I never really get any slack about my many many weekend trips, maybe because of the kids ages. We went about 7 times last year, and plan on many more this year, and we havent seen 25% of what there is to see. Maybe we saw 10%. I agree with a pp who is the single mom who said that Disney entertains the kids while she just gets to spend time with them.

I did mention to DH that I wanted to take the kids out west once, and his response..."why go far away when the entire world is 2 hours away?" LOL

We bought DVC so now we have an excuse to go. Our friends and family don't even ask us why we are going again. I think they've given up trying to understand.

for us,it has always been a great 'all inclusive' deal for fun! nowhere else could we find all the fun,and amenities in one huge place to make all family members happy like WDW!
And when ds was young, his severe food allergies made it a no brainer-nowhere else could we relax and find food for him at restaurants (different times from now)
so...that was our family vacation, yearly! why should I have to explain a place that makes the family relaxed and happy? Even my dh,who isn't that into Disney loves the various resorts and relaxing and playing.....

I would guess it's because of your geography. I live in Austin, TX, and Sea World San Antonio is 2 hours away. No one ever gives anyone grief over their Sea World San Antonio trips. But Disney, that is a plane flight or a serious road trip, and that seems to make a difference for some reason.

Ha ha we live in San Antonio so I had to respond to your post, ValpoCory! We wind up going to WDW about every other year. This started when we moved to SA almost 6 years ago. We used to live in So. Orange County, CA and used to go to DLR fairly often, but not as often as one might think since we lived pretty nearby. you know the old, "we live right there, no hurry" thing. When we lived there my kids were terrified of the dark rides, so it was easy to avoid it. Now we bypass Six Flags Fiesta (whatever its called) and haven't been to Sea World in at least 3 years to save up to get to WDW. Our two DDs are on board w/ this. I just need to remind them once in a while

Yes we get grief from some of the family in So Cal, but those are the same folks who never travel ANYWHERE and my SIL who lives in So Cal has never even taken her DD to DLR. I guess we all have our priorities, and for us, Disney is near the top of the list. Sure I would love to go to Europe and Asia, but the reality is that it is very out of reach for us cost-wise. We can travel the world at Epcot, and the cost is really pretty decent when you can work it out just right. :goodvibes
