How do you pronounce the names...

They are 2 different names to me. Lori rhymes with story and Laurie rhymes with sorry.

It is a pet peeve for me because my DD's middle name is Lauren. Not Loren. 2 different names.

my name is Laura - pronounced Lora Like stora
My mother say's Laarah :confused3 Like she's from the south, she never left NYstate :rolleyes1 She named me and say's it wrong, go figure:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Everyone else in my life say's it the right way:yay:

I find the differences in pronunciation fascinating...so out of curiosity, how does everyone pronounce the following words (i've inconcluded my pronunciations beside them)

roof (rhymes with "goof" as in goofy)
about ("a-bow-t" as in "OW" that hurt)
again (uh-gen)
caught (edit: i originally put "cot" but then I realized some people pronounce "cot" as almost "cat" so i'll put "cawt" instead..)
sorrow (sore-row)
Mazda ("mAHz-duh" i find this one particularly interesting since it's pronounced this way in Canada but when I see American commericials they pronounce it "mawz-duh")

Since your mom is the one who named you, I would assume she's pronouncing it the way she intended it to be said.

Same here. Two different names. I have friends with "both" names, both spellings pronounced differently. Lori rhymes with story, and Laurie rhymes with sorry. And sorry rhymes with starry. :rotfl:

I am now curious about how those who pronounce "sorry" and "story" as rhyming words say "Laurence," as "Laurie" started out as a nickname for "Laurence" (IIRC). Do y'all say Lore-ence or Law-rence?

and thanks for the Canadian reference on the story-sorry thing, btw. I had a Canadian roommate in college. I can hear it in my head now - lol.

My niece is Lauren, pronounce Lore-en. My sister in law's niece is Loren, prounouced Lore-en.
My friend is Lori, pronounced Lore-ee. I don't know any Laurie, but I say it the same as Lori.
I knew a Laura in school and it was pronounced Lore-uh.

:confused3

I live in Illinois and we pronounce them the same. Lori and Laurie are the same name -- same as Sara and Sarah.

We also pronounce story and sorry with the same sound.
(st-oar-ey and s-oar-ee)

Depends on where in Illinois you live. The names, yes are pronounced the same.

However, I do not think story & sorry are pronounced the same where I'm at. I never gave it a thought before until this thread but my sorry is rhymes more with "starry" without the t.

I gave up a LONG time ago on names, I figure if I mispronounce it, hopefully someone will correct me since I never know how to pronounce them anymore it seems. One that really messed my DD up was "Anna" -- we know someone who pronounces it "On-na", so she always reads it that way. She was reading a book where the character was "Anna" but would be "Anne-a" for the pronouncation (or at least we assume that), it baffled the people she was talking to about the book as she never knew it pronounced any other way than the person we know.

We say both as Lor-ee. My mom's name (Laurie) gets misspelled as Lori all the time.

Laurence= Law-rence.

It is missspelled because it is mispronounced. ;)

Honestly, if I had known people didn't make a distinction between Lauren and Loren, I would have never used the name.:headache:

I'm a Lori and I've always pronounced them differently.

Lori became a popular name in the 1960's because of a CBS soap opera character. There were 5 "Lori Ann's" in my HS graduating class.

I grew up in PA and both were pronounced the same, but I was aware that some people pronounced Laurie differently. Mrs. Partridge always called her daughter "Lahr-ee" while I seem to remember that Keith  pronounced it "Lor-ee."

same as these, except sar-row, not sore-row

I've always said Lori and Laurie the same (rhyming with story) and sorry like stary.

I live in New England now, but grew up in upstate NY.

I can't believe this fluff thread went on for 4 pages! :rotfl::rotfl:

My name is Lauren and I HATE when people say like L-or-en. I am L-are-en. My good friend is named Laurie and she also uses the 'are' sound not the 'or' sound. My name would have an O in it, if I wanted an O sound!

Someone asked about the name Sara --- that is actually my middle name, and I pronounce it exactly the same as Sarah. I've never heard it said any other way. S-air-a.
