See, I would say that story and sorry rhyme, unless you pronounce "sorry" like SAH-ree, which I've never heard. I would say Lori and Laurie are pronounced the same.

Are you from the North? I saw sah-ree for sorry and I'm from GA. But my parents are from NY and I think that's why my sister is Lor-ee instead of Lau-ree. It's got that oah sound to it that yankees like so much.

I'm from the Northeast & pronounce sorry as SAHR-ee...not SORE-ee....so it must be regional...but then again I'm watching E! Network right now which is based in CA & someone just said "she should be SAHR-ee!"
I also have friends Laura & Lora. Around here they are different - Laura is LAHR-ah and Lora is LOHR-ah. Again, could just be the northeast dialect! I think we use the ahhh sound more than some. Others may say ohhh where we say ahhhh.
Even when you are old and decrepit you can learn new things. I am in my 50's, have lived all over the country and have never heard it pronounced Lah-rie.
I pronounce it the same for both (L+oar-ee), and I do say sah-ree, not soar-ee, but from now on I will ask first how the Lauri/Lori wants it pronounced.
To me, they are pronounced the same...but then, I don't understand why others think sorry and story DON'T rhyme!
Lara = L-Ah- ra
Laura = L - Oh -ra (therefore, Laurie = L - Oh - rie)
But, if I know someone likes their name pronounced a certain way, I defer to them (on a case by case basis!).
On a similar note, I had a friend named "Sara" who insisted that Sara has a "bar" sound to the first "a" while Sarah has a "bare" sound to the first "a". Other "Sara"s I've known insist that both are pronounced the same. How do others pronounce this name? I generally go with the 'a' from "bare".
