How do you pronounce the names...

I'm from the Northeast & pronounce sorry as SAHR-ee...not SORE-ee....so it must be regional...but then again I'm watching E! Network right now which is based in CA & someone just said "she should be SAHR-ee!"

I also have friends Laura & Lora. Around here they are different - Laura is LAHR-ah and Lora is LOHR-ah. Again, could just be the northeast dialect! I think we use the ahhh sound more than some. Others may say ohhh where we say ahhhh.

The same for me..

Here in Jersey I have only heard Laura as Lohr-ah..... Lahr-ah would be Lara

Laurie is LAHR-ee

Lori is LOR-ee

I pronounce my name (Laura) LAHR-AH

Are you from the North? I saw sah-ree for sorry and I'm from GA. But my parents are from NY and I think that's why my sister is Lor-ee instead of Lau-ree. It's got that oah sound to it that yankees like so much. ;)

I'm from NY, and I don't know anyone that says sah-ree. Maybe it has something to do iwth most people I know don't have English as a first language? Or maybe it is regional.

The way I and most native-born Americans I've ever heard pronounce "sorry" is like "starry", only without the t. So you say it like "story" without the t? To me that has always been the dead give-away that someone is Canadian or has strong Canadian ties. I especially remember Michael J. Fox, Peter Jennings, and John Candy saying it that way, among others. Maybe you are far enough north to be in part of the U.S. where that pronunciation is common because of the crossover of Canadian and American cultures.

I wonder if there's someplace where they say "sorry" like "worry". For me, worry rhymes with furry.

Haha. There is a Nickelback song called How You Remind Me and in it he says "sorry" and it sounds like story without the t. I always wondered if that was because they were from Canada...I guess I now know that it's true!

both the same.
when i say it, it sounds like lah/rie (law/rie)

i like the way lori looks.

I pronounce both as Lohr-ee.

Also, for the whole "sorry" thing, to me it rhymes with "story" and "cory" etc. Virtually all Canadians pronounce it this way. In fact I've never actually heard of anyone pronouncing it as "saw-ree" until a friend of mine randomly said to me "hey, did you know that Americans say "saw-ree"?". I listened for it when we were in WDW, and sure enough heard it pronounced that way.

Ditto that. "Sorry" rhymes with "starry." It's not like, "I'm sore with an 'e' added on." I would say "story" rhymes with "Cory" or "Dory/Dorie" but given this thread, who know HOW those names are pronounced? :rotfl2:

As for Lori/Laurie, everyone I ever knew pronounced them the same. "Lori" wasn't even seen where I grew up until maybe the 70s, as it was a less traditional spelling. But if someone moved in from another area where Laurie was pronounced "lahr-ee" we would have politely pronounced it that way. I think that's more a regional issue.

I live in Illinois and we pronounce them the same. Lori and Laurie are the same name -- same as Sara and Sarah.

We also pronounce story and sorry with the same sound.
(st-oar-ey and s-oar-ee)

I live in NYC, and we pronounce both Lori and Laurie the same...like story.

Sara and Sarah I've heard both ways, with the a pronounced like have, and like stair.

We say sorry like starry.

I pronounce them slightly different. Lori is LOR-ee. Laurie is a cross between LOR-ee and LAW-ree.

Like TaraPA said....and then there's my niece. She's Loura instead of Laura and yes, they are said differently.

I agree with TaraPA and BeachGirlFLA. My daughter is Laura (L "are" a) not Lora (L "or" a) and not Lara (L "air" a). Drives me nuts when my MIL mispronounces it.

My uncle dated a woman a couple of years ago whose name was Laurie but she pronounced like you would say Lori.
