Sometimes I hear people pronounce a name as Dwon. I don't know if they mean Don or Dawn.

I have to admit that I am a fish out of water as far as that goes. My mom and I both have western PA roots and those names sound the same to us - we are Michigan transplants. My sister was born and raised in Michigan and she can tell the difference. What's funny is that I dated a guy named Don for years. I had a huge collection of pet names for the guy and tried to avoid using his given name as much as possible.

Actually I do. Also you and youse guys.

Pittsburgh roots, but dropped Pop for Soda while I was still young. College & 10 years in Philly and escaped with no damage except I now call Subs - Hoagies. 20 years in the South and Yinz and Youse has finally been replaced by Ya'll. Only other southern word I've picked up because it is so useful in many applications is "Fixin' "

I pronounce it as Hollow-een. Don't know why I do that as it should be Hal - o - ween now that you mention it.

(My friend insists that the man's name Don and woman's name Dawn aren't the same).

"

Don and Dawn are not the same, they are clearly pronounced two different ways- my niece is named Dawn and I think she would be a bit ticked off if people called her Don LOL..... and I m sure a man named Don would not appreciate being called Dawn!

That's what I mean by accent. Where I'm from and where I live now, they're pronounced the same, likewise with the time of day and the verb 'don'. All the same.
