Philly vernacular: crown

As I was dropping my kids off at pre-school years ago, the teacher said, "Okay everybody, get out your crowns." I thought maybe they were playing some game where they all wore crowns and was surprised to see them getting crayons instead. (Obviously, I didn't grow up in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area.) We always pronounced it cray-awns in western Pennsylvania.

I do not say Cran, Crown, Crouton, Conan, Coraline, or whatever else you weirdos from Doctor Seuss territories say.
All these pronunciation threads! Soon I'll need a translator just to travel within the US.

Scarily accurate! It's darker near where I grew up, but still pretty bright where I live now. I know a few of my words have changed (grew up with pop, now say soda, etc.)

I say "cran". I never heard of anyone saying "cra-yon" growing up. The funny thing is, my husband grew up in the same city, but his parents are from another state. He says "cra-yon". Of course, I realize as an adult that the right way is two syllables, but it's just not how I learned it or heard it in the classroom.

I've never heard anyone say "cran". Here is is either cray on or crown.

Pronunciations are so weird. My brother and sister in law said they wished they would not have named their daughter Megan since no one can pronounce it correctly..... Her name is Meg n and they get really pissed when they hear Mayg n. I hardly hear a difference.

I see your profile says you’re in Maryland. Is that where your brother and SIL are, too? I grew up there and was an adult before I ever heard it pronounced Meh-gan. May-gan seems to be the standard in that region.
