How do you make paper snowflakes, again?

For the life of me I can't remember how to fold the paper to make these thigns. I tried looking on the Internet for instructions but they're either really complicated or they don't work the way they're supposed to.

DD really wants to make these for Christmas gifts so if anyone could tell me or provide me with a HELPFUL link, it would be greatly appreciated!

Get a square piece of paper or trim a piece of paper so that it is square.

Fold your square in half diagonally (have a look at the picture).

Fold your triangle in half - again diagonally (look at the picture above).

Fold paper in thirds ... one side to the front, the other to the back.

Trim the extra piece of paper off the end of your small triangle.

Around the outside of your triangle, cut some fun designs -- circles, squares, triangles, squiggles ... anything goes.

Unfold your paper and look at your masterpiece.

Voila! A snowflake to hang in your window.

It works best with circles, so you may need to first trace plates of varous sizes onto paper, then cut out the circles.

Fold in half.

Then fold the resulting semi-circle in approximate thirds.

Then cut out random designs, zigzags, etc. Using special-effects scissors if you have them is even better. Remember not to cut through from one edge to the other. You can, however, cut designs into the rounded edge of the paper, and you can cut out the pointed tip.

Then carefully unfold.

Yes, I know snowflakes are supposed to be eight-sided; but I think folding the paper in half/half/half (instead of half/thirds) results in a disaster. I'm not sure - it's been years since I actually did this.

Disclaimer: My "it works best with circles" comment is in NO way meant to dispute or argue with Magic Mom's instructions. We were both typing at the same time; just, her response appeared first.

At least I think that's it. I think the board's programming doesn't play favorites... :)

I looked this up at work, just today!

I'll try to describe what I learned...

take sheet of paper.
fold it hamburger style
now, fold it into third, making a cone.. tip is on the bottom/where the fold is... for me, I made a cone.. then, when I had my third even.. crease.
then, fold it in half again.. making the lines/folds on the outside.
One side, you'll see a fold about 2/3 from the bottom.. cut along there... now make your snowflake.. and you'll have a six sided snowflake.

here's what we decorated my classroom with..

Different directions.

Good luck OP!

Oh, WOW! Thanks for the quick replies everybody! :worship:

I was seriously going crazy b/c I couldn't remember how to do something I did so often as a kid. DD is already making them out of squares and, it's her bed time now but, we'll be making the circle ones tomorrow.

And I LOVE the idea about the crazy scissors. We have a set that we'll put to use later.

Again, thank you, thank you, thank you! And if anyone has other ideas or tips to add I would love to hear more.
