How do you feel about DRIVE THRUS?

We are too fat. Now they just give stickers.

My Credit Union has a bowl of those Dum Dum brand lollipops on the counter - I take one every time I am there. Because I have to GO in - they don't have a drive - through. Come to think of it, even the ATM is a walk up, not a drive through!!! So I really offset my carbon footprint when I have to go to the bank.

Where do you buy your milk? A boutique??? I don't see milk and bread as unnecessary convience items.

Kristine

Who said that milk and bread are unnecessary convience items? The drive-thru to get these staples is what's unnecessary.

Then we will have to get rid of internet shopping, phone orders, and ready made foods that are prepared in those plastic containers, and much, much more. Have you heard the side effects of cell phones, microwaves, plastic bags? They are cutting into the specialty shops profit margin, clogging up our landfills, and expanding our backsides.

For the record, I agree with most of what you said right here. That's why most stores around here encourage you to use reusable bags by offering a discount and why some people choose to not own cellphones and why many actually cook meals, not microwave them. There are times when all of these things are appropriate to use, but just not habitually. We should be able to live for weeks, if not months, without internet shopping, phone orders, ready made foods in their plastic containers, cell phones, microwaves, and plastic bags.

I have been accused of not seeing this argument from the other side. Whether or not you believe me, I do understand. That's why sometimes I find myself giving into ways of convience. I guess I would just hope that more people would be aware of the negative effects many of these convience items and services can have. If you choose to continue using them but are at least aware of what you're doing, great!

When I was in banking we were not allowed to give out candy because a kid could choke or go into diabetic shock and the bank would be liable. We couldn't even give out dog bones in the drive up because a dog could choke and we could be sued. Yeah our regional manager was afraid of being sued.

FYI...many of the things I purchase I can only purchase online because the store is either an internet only store or there is no local outlet for me to purchase from.

And FWIW I am not going to give up internet shopping, home delivery or microwave meals. I actually find some microwave meals are actually healthier than what I would cook for myself. And they are easier to take to work to heat up than leftovers. And they are helping me lose weight by forcing me to control my portion size.

So why must you continue to force your opinion onto us. We will never agree why not leave it at that and just walk away from this thread?

Oh and I will never EVER give up my cellphone. It's my only link to some of my friends in other parts of the country and cheaper than a land line.

But I do reuse my bags from the grocery store. Only because my sister likes to save all grocery bags for some reason and I got tired of them piling up like kindling.

You have crossed the line! I will never give up shopping and internet shopping is all I can do right now, especially with the craptastic US dollar.

I wish there were more drive thus near where I live. I had a horrific time this afternoon trying to naviagte my 9 month pregnant butt over an icy sidewalk to get to the bank. I'm also jealous of those of you who have drive thru Starbucks since it's impossible to find parking by the one near here.

I almost wish we moved deep into the suburbs where everything has a drive thru or at least a parking lot. It's too far to walk anywhere and we spend so much time looking for parking.

How does internet shopping hurt the environment or make us fat?

Hmm, that's a dilemma. Sit on my butt ordering books from Amazon, or use my car and foul the air so I can drive to Barnes & Noble and walk from my parking spot to the store to pick them out in person? Which is better? Which harms the atmosphere more? Which is better for my waistline? I think it's a toss up.....

Also, why the hating on microwaves and cell phones? How does microwaving something make it worse? Why would talking on a cell phone harm the environment more than the old-fashioned way of using my land line? Questions, questions....

Aw man someone is in trouble now. No one messes with Bomb and her shopping.

OK, actually I don't understand why I should have to live for weeks or months without a cell phone or a microwaved meal. I'd really like you to explain this to me. Why not use plastic bags and containers - they can be recycled and if they aren't going back into the waste stream, isn't that better than using up resources to create new cloth bags?

And you have completely lost me with internet shopping and cell phone use....

I think we should cover all angles here.

Take your laptop with you. Drive to Barnes & Noble. Park as close as you can to the store, heck park on the sidewalk. (Geesh, why don't they have a drvie-thru? :rotfl: ) Then take your laptop and go into the little cafe inside B&N. Sit there, drinking the coffee that you got on your way over, from the Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts drive-thru and order your books online from Barnes & Noble.

How's that sound?

Why do they need to have an excuse? Regardless of what they say you will just go on believing your assumption that they are lazy. If is means that much to you, you could always swing on down to your local drive-thru and conduct a survey as people pull out of the drive-thru.:confused3

"Excuse me, sir? Are you a Fat Lazy Slob? If so, please check yes here"

I have done that before...not the parking on the sidewalk bit but ordering something online from Barnes & Noble while in Barnes & Noble. But only because what I wanted wasn't in the store. Course I could have called from home on my cell phone before wasting gas and creating greenhouse gases by going to the store. Either way the evironment is screwed.

1. I think that unnecessary convience items, which drive-thrus are but one, are hurting society. Because a large number of people are dependent on them, it will eventually take away the more traditional, non-convience items that many of us prefer to use. (Look at what's happening to local speciality shops because people are demanding the convience of big box stores, for example.) Many of these more traditional items and services are better for our health, for our socialization, for our economy, and for our mental health.

2. Drive-thrus specifically are bad for the environment. (See many of my other posts for more on this.) This is the environment that belongs to me as much as it belongs to you.

1. You're free to shop where ever you want, as are we. Its called a free xountry for a reason. My mental health would be severely compramised without Dunkin Donuts.

2. I think our environment is harmed more from you spouting off hot air in this thread than me idling at Dunkin Donuts (my latte was good by the way, thanks for asking)
