I bought some cube steak in the store because it looked "cool" and dear SO says all I cook is chicken and turkey.

So how do I cook it? Does it taste good, :crazy2: It looks like this

Thanks in advance.

PS. Any other beef and pork recipes are more than welcome to, I don't want to turn poor Dear SO into a "chicken".

My favorite is turning it into swiss steak. dredge cube steak in flour and brown in fat in pan. Put in crockpot with diced canned tomatoes, celery, bay leaf or two. Simmer long time until tender. Serve over noodles or potatoes. Tomatoe, flour etc turns into a brown gravy. Acid of tomatoes tenderizes cube steak.

Or just panfry if don't mind tough meat!

I saute mine in butter, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Sometimes I'll saute mushrooms first to go with it. The key with cube steak is to either braise it like Wished I Lived in FL said, or cook it until it's, at most, medium-medium rare. If you panfry and overcook it, it will be like shoe leather.

I'm sorry, I'm having an " :scratchin " moment, when you say brown in fat, is that the fat that is from the meat or are you talking about something else?

Yep, what she said! I saute the meat in spices and then saute mushrooms and onions to put on top. Then load on the A-1 and you are set. Even my picky DD loves this...course she doesn't eat the toppings, which in my opinion are the best part.....

Can't speak for the poster, but I think enough fat comes out of beef that you really don't need more.... I do spray a little PAM though, just in case.....

I think she means oil. I cover mine with flour and then pan fry in a little oil. You can do so much as some of the other posters said. sometimes we eat our's just plan w/ketchup. Or open a can of cream of mushroom soup heat and pour over the top. Anyway it is easy to work with, so enjoy! :teeth:

Cube steak for me usually becomes a chicken fried steak. YUM! I don't have a recipe I follow I just follow what my Mom did, and usually end up calling her. I like the taste of it, and thank you for reminding me I have one in the freezer. Hmmmmm

I just salt & pepper mine, toss it in some flour, and fry it in vegie oil. Serve it with mashed potatoes and cover it in A-1! Yummo! Had it just the other night.

I usually cover mine in flour and fry in veggie oil. If you cook it slow and at a lower temp it will not be tough. Some times I cover it in flour and brown it and then put it in a crockpot and cover in in gravy that I made and let it simmer and it is fall apart tender. To make the gravy I brown flour in veggie oil and then add milk and water to it and stir yuntil it is smooth.

I make beef stroganoff with it! I cut the cubed steak with kitchen scissors and then follow the directions on the McCormick's beef strog package. I serve it over extra wide elbow noodles and even my kids eat it! My husband even said it's better than his mom's beef stroganoff! :thumbsup2

Does your chicken fried steak recipe kinda sound like this?? You'll need seasoned bread crumbs, or season plain ones with garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper. Dredge your cube steak in the crumbs, dip it in beaten egg and then back in the crumbs. Fry in oil on medium heat for 5 minutes, flip and continue frying until golden brown. I usually serve mine with mashed potatoes, peas and a grean salad or cole slaw.

I simply take it and place it in a casserol dish covered. But I add 1 packet of brown gravy mix.

Take the brown gravy mix and add 1 cup hot water to it, stir until all is combined. Take Onion powder and garlic salt and sprinkle over meat, pour the brown gravy mixture over the meat and place in oven at 350 for 45 to 1 hour. Thsi cooking time is for at least 8 pieces, it you have4 pieces, then 30 to 45 minutes will be fine. It comes out real tender and you can serve with Mashed Potatoes or something else. :sunny:

I season mine with seasoned salt and garlic and fry it in the pan. That's it. I LOVE cube steak!

My mom used to tenderize it with the meat hammer, and cover it in Wostershire Sauce as it cooked. We ate it with mac & cheese and green beans. I haven't seen cube steak in the grocery in ages, or liver for that matter.

Oh yeah! Thats how I do it!! Delic!

wow, I never thought cube steak was that popular. I can't wait to give it a try for dear SO. Hmm, maybe I'll even taste it.

LOL! Good luck ... I can NEVER get it like my mom did, but I may try a few of the ideas you have gotten here! Let us know how the dinner turns out :)

This recipe was in the January issue of Southern Living as one of their best recipes of all time. I haven't tried it yet but am intending to.

Chicken-Fried Steak

1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
4 (4-ounce) cube steaks
38 saltine crackers (1 sleeve), crushed
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, divided
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons salt, divided
1 1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper, divided
1/2 teaspoon ground red pepper
4 3/4 cups milk, divided
2 large eggs
3 1/2 cups peanut oil
Garnish: chopped fresh parsley

Sprinkle salt and pepper evenly over steaks. Set aside.
Combine cracker crumbs, 1 cup flour, baking powder, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, and red pepper.

Whisk together 3/4 cup milk and eggs. Dredge steaks in cracker crumb mixture; dip in milk mixture, and dredge in cracker mixture again.

Pour oil into a 12-inch skillet; heat to 360°. (Do not use a nonstick skillet.) Fry steaks 10 minutes. Turn and fry 4 to 5 more minutes or until golden brown. Remove to a wire rack on a jellyroll pan. Keep steaks warm in a 225° oven. Carefully drain hot oil, reserving cooked bits and 1 tablespoon drippings in skillet.

Whisk together remaining 1/4 cup flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon black pepper, and 4 cups milk. Pour mixture into reserved drippings in skillet; cook over medium-high heat, whisking constantly, 10 to 12 minutes or until thickened. Serve gravy with steaks and mashed potatoes. Sprinkle with parsley, if desired
