how do you find out how many points you need to vacation at certain times of the year at certain destinations?

Look up. There are DVC point charts near the top of this board for all DVC resorts. If you are looking for non-dvc resorts, you need to go to the DVC website.

Never mind. Asked and already answered! :)

Best wishes -

Can I just ask a couple of questions?

1. how many pts did you start out with?
2. Do you think its worth it?
3. Do you go every year?

There are a few ways to find out how many points you need:

1) Call Disney Vacation Club, they will be happy to send out some complimentary information which will include the current point charts.
2) Go to http://www.wdwinfo.com/resort/dvcpoint.cfm they have a point calculator there based upon 2004 point values (its not the most current)
3) Caskbill (a user on this forum) has produced a slick vacation planner which allows you to see how many points are needed for a stay at http://web.nalu.net/~wneth/dvcplanner.htm

Hope this helps

No problem. I can't tell you how long it took me to figure some stuff out. I could not tell if you were an owner or a potential renter. Sounds like you're an owner. You may want to get Caskbill's DVC Planner. It will also tell you point totals. Plus, when you enter your trip, it will give you 11 and 7 mo windows and T&T day. Just do a serch for one of his posts and the link's in his sig.

Happy planning!

Sure!

1. We started with 200 (bought in late 1999). I was prepared to argue with DH settle for 150 because I didn't think he would go for DVC at all. To this day, I am still amazed that he went on the tour with me (I didn't have to beg or anything, honest, LOL) . At the end of the tour, he said to buy right now from Disney if I wanted to do it. (I was talking about investigating resale, but he wanted BWV or nothing. Fine by me). When I asked him what he thought the amount should be he said 200, so I jumped on it. (I know when to stop selling)! Then before we even took our first trip as members, we bought 50 more - I told him it was better to buy more points than to pay cash for our daughter's trip (graduation present). Again, he said fine and I didn't argue!

2. Yes, definitely worth it. We were going once a year for about a week and I occasionally slipped in a long weekend trip with a friend. We always stayed in moderate or deluxe on site resorts, depending on what discount I could get. Now we stay in nicer DVC accomodations for less than we had been paying for the moderates. (We only stayed deluxe if I could get a big discount).

3. Now, we go at least once per year in early December, but have way more points than just the two of us need to do that (but somehow we manage to use them anyway, LOL). We have gotten 2 bedrooms several times to take family along with us - did that 5 times since 1999. One of those times was in January and one was over President's week. But the others were all our preferred early December time. We also used points to send our daughter and niece & nephew on a trip in July (1 bedroom). We've also used points for a couple of days at VB. So I think we've done a lot. Right now I am in the borrowing mode, but only by 12 points.

If you haven't already, read the thread about how people manage with 150 points or less. Sometimes it seems like most here have a bazillion points because they go so often or stay so long or regularly book Grand Villas, but there are actually quite a few members who do just fine with 150 or less.

Good luck with your decision making process!

thanks everyone. Im not a member yet, but thinking about it. Wondering how many points I would need and how much a month it would cost.
