How do I teach a friend about DVC?

The friend in question has been with us on a trip where I rented DVC points 4 years back. She was amazed by the Boardwalk villas and the price we paid (it was $10/pt back then). But since then she's been heading to disney paying rack rate and complaining about the cost. She's always curious as to how I, a single mom, can afford it while she and her husband have a hard time with it. No matter what I say or how I try to present the idea of DVC and points she just doesn't "get it". She thinks DVC's a gimmick and a waste of money (even though they pay for a week at deluxe rack rate every year) :rotfl2:

I'm determined to give teaching her one more, final, shot as she's headed off to the world with her family next week and I'm positive I'll hear the moans and groans of a broken wallet again. I've come to realize there are just some people DVC is not meant for even if they have the funds, go to Disney every year and love the DVC resorts.

DVC is not for everyone. But, in comparison to regular deluxe stays, DVC can be much, much cheaper. DVC is prepaid deluxe accomodations. prepaid is why you get the discount.

DVC is not as flexible (better if you plan 11 months out and do not cancel...) in some areas, and that alone may be reason for some to not buy DVC.

Give her a copy of the DVC DVD. This will cover the basics.

There are different types of people in the world. Some pay the sticker price and others are tuned in and take advantage of discounts. The fact that you are the DIS Member and not your friend, tells me that she isn't tuned in. I don't think that you will be able to convert her.

If you can't pay for it outright, I can see how people can't see how it's a savings until it's paid off. If you have the cash, then it's just as good as an investment in the stock market these days...

It's all in the numbers. Take pencil and paper in hand and show her what she has spent on her 1 week deluxe every year for the past 4 years. Remind her of the 11% (?) resort tax and that as a DVC owner, you don't pay that additional tax. Also, DVC is a commodity, just like anything else. I like to think of my DVC as if I'd just purchased a new automobile (about the same price). When DVC no longer 'works' for me, I'll sell and I'll be eternally grateful for the many family vacations we've had and the memories we've made.

If the above doesn't work, then I'd say forget it. There are some folks that have the perception of high pressure sales and exorbitant fees/costs. And, while the costs are significant, have you seen rack rate lately? Just my 2 cents.

I've noticed she tends not to plan vacations very far out. DVC could still work for them to save, but if making last minute plans they'd need to be prepared to take what they can get... ahem... *if* they can get anything. OK. Yo ugot me thinking this might not be for them after all.

Did that, even tried watching it with her even but her attention span wasn't there. (In her defense, she teaches special need 2nd graders... anyone with an 8 yo knows you can't focus on any one thing for too long or trouble happens. ;))

I think you're right. I've shown her the DIS and all the great forums and folk here, always ready to lend knowledge, but she still turns to me when she needs to know anything Disney-ish. She doesn't want to be educated, she just wants solutions handed to her. DVC does involve a bit of work when it comes to planning, banking, borrowing etc. No, I can foresee her buying too many points and then them being wasted. Again your point got me thinking, this does not sound like her cup of tea...

They have the cash, there'd be no financing involved. She just looks at the yearly numbers as compared to the purchase price & dues. Part of me thinks she won't look at future savings because we don't know for sure what's headed our way.

Yea, I've seen rack that's why I'm :rotfl: and  If she wants to pay cash, fine, 40% off and 7 for 4 deals make the prices better, but she's not even taking advantage of those.

Shhhhsh. DVC is a secret. So far, it's been pretty well kept. Don't go blabbing.

Disney's the biggest blabberer of them all. I'd appreciate it if they'd slip a couple of my favorite resorts off the list and truly keep them secret ;)

If you've given them the dvd and answered questions time and again and they are dis members then there is not much else you can do. Some people are scared of the term "timeshare" and wont recognize their own habits to see the benefits and some will. It's not for everyone...

I dunno Twinklebug, I don't think I would give up on her or her husband just yet. Have them come over and view the DVD with you, that way you can add a little to what the DVD maybe does not cover for them. Sounds like they go enough each year so would pay off for them eventually just like the rest of us. I mean I know they may do alot last minute stays but usually there is something( ya I know there is times there isn't but not always) at last minute. :thumbsup2
Another thing is show them the rental board that HAS to be better then rack rates at Deluxe resorts:confused3
GOOD LUCK and have them visit the DIS might help them out too...pirate:
