How do I avoid shin splints?

I got a terrible case of shin splints (in both legs) last year at WDW. What's the best way to avoid getting them again? They're really painful - every step hurt. This is the first time this has ever happened to me, in several trips to WDW, and I want to avoid it at all costs next time!

So is the best way to avoid shin splints just to start a really good walking program, several months ahead of time, to get my shins used to all the walking? I'd love any advice you have.

Thanks, all!

Good, well fit shoes is a must. Developing a regular walking program will also help a great deal.

Lots of stretches for the calf and lower leg muscles for sure, Ice and avoid heat on the shins direct. If walking/jogging to get "in shape" for the world - do this on softer ground like grass as much as possible - reduces the impact.

I developed shin splints in both legs 8 weeks before the London marathon in 2007....I had intensive physio in the run up and still did the race....raised £4000 for a small charity so it was worth it. But I suffered like you would not believe by doing it.

It has taken a long slow recovery process for me and I'm still careful now. We're off to The World in 2 weeks, I will be packing anti-inflammatories, ice packs for the freezer and strapping bandages just incase.

On the advice of Andy my physio I also have orthotic insoles to put in my trainers for my heels. These helped me hugely, but everyone is different, so seek advice before trying this sort of thing.

I used to get shin splints crossing the street. Then, on someone's advice, I visited a marathon shop, a running store that specializes in running gear. They had experts there who will watch you walk and look at your shoes and recommend a shoe based on your ailment and alignment.

Turns out I overpronate, so I wear only Asics Gels with the extra support on the heels. Haven't had a shin splint since I changed shoes, but I'd get an expert's advice before you change shoes.

Good luck!

These kinds of places were great, I went to one and they analysed my walk and run to get the right trainers for me. My shin splints were from pounding the pavements in training, but the insoles helped. I agree though - seek thorough advice before buying anything.

I mention this to people all the time-even those who are in great shape. You must start walking a couple of months before your trip. Stretch and walk. Wear a pair of worn in shoes. Oh yeah walk, walk, walk....
Good luck on your next trip.

Thanks for the advice, everyone! I'll definitely start "training" four or five months ahead of time, and will see if I can find a place to get some advice on better shoes. I never want to go through that again!
