How do extra magic hours work?

If you are staying at a Disney hotel that offers the extra magic hours, once the park has closed how do they know you can stay later? Do you have to carry your room card/key to someone special so they know you can stay late?

I know it must be pretty simple, I've just never been to a park during extra magic hours so I'm not exactly sure how it's supposed to work.

For evening EMH, you have to get a wristband or you can't ride. To get a wristband you have to show your room key.

Actually they don't throw non-wristbanded people out of the park. They're allowed to stay in, but they can't get on any attractions. They're always free to shop and walk around.

:teeth: ok it is not that simple because I forgot mine the first night!!

LOL

first of all you need your room keys..everyone needs a room key and u take it to a special designated place in the park (there are several so just ask) and they give you these little wristband thingies...look at our pic below we are wearing them...I would get these before closing other wise if you get there during EMH like I did, there are only a few spots to get the bands, being at the front of the parks usually...anyway...everyone one gets a band. You must have the room key like I said. Then you can be in the park, everyone can be in the park but ONLY if you have a wristband will they let you get on a ride. The CM's check EVERY single persons wristband before entering the ride waiting area.

Have fun at EMH they tend to be crowded esp at night I hear but when we went it was empty, of course, we were there til 12 am!!! :cool1: And back up at 8am to go to MK again!! Gosh we were insane that trip....we lived on pure Disney happiness that week...

Do they still charge for the EMH? I had read previously that the cost for this was $10-12. Is that still true?

NO charge for EMH.

Two weeks ago was our first experience with an evening EMH. We thought, great! We'll have the rides to oursevles!

The joke was on us, seemed like every person we saw (and there were lots!) had on wrist bands for EMH.

The only advantage we noticed was that the park was opened later. It didn't clear out the crowds one bit, nor did it make the lines any shorter.

I guess it depends on what time of year you go, but this was February 9th - 12th, not in the middle of a spring break, summer vacation or Christmas! :confused3

I believe the experts say to avoid the EMH parks because everyone will be there on that day. It's recommended that you go to another park as they won't be nearly as crowded. (Everyone will be at the EMH park!)

We practically walked right onto many rides when we were there last May! Have a great trip!

it is all the roll of the dice I guess

I believe that people not buying park hoppers would choose to go to that park with EMH so that they can stay at the EMH if that makes any sense.

All but once we steered clear of EMH parks and EMH except one night, late.

When we were there last August-the last week-the EMH's were great! We said that we would be changing our normal day trips to night EMH's in the future. I still think that it is less crowded considering that you have to be on site and many others are not night owls. It probably depends on when you go I guess.

So how does it work if you are taking a child, she won't have a room card unless I ask for one during check-in and then just hold on to it myself until it's needed for EMHs. Is that what you are supposed to do, or do the little ones get a wrist-band without having to show a room key (just from my room key)?

The little ones also have Keys to the World cards that I just hold onto with mine. You can get them with no charging priviledges. If you are on a package they will also have the park tickets on them. If you have paper tickets you can get them transfered to your room key (Key to the World Card).
