How did you decide to buy DVC???

This stupid board. :) No tour, no video, not even a visit to WDW. This board talked me into it. Now I'm stuck taking a vacation every year and having a great time. Oh well. :)

Why did we buy? Because we like the good life!!!

Seriously, while we have a mental block about paying $250 a night for a hotel room, we had no problem buying a piece of the magic with monthly installment payments. And now it's paid off, so we just have the dues, which are also subtracted from our checking (see a trend here??)

We can splurge without guilt on a 1 or 2 bedroom with a luxurious Jacuzzi tub, kitchen, living area, etc. etc. We can sleep separately from our son, who is a notoriously noisy sleeper (and mom and dad also get their privacy -- now that's a real vacation!) And now that we've relocated to Michigan from Florida. we are REALLY going to appreciate our January time at DVC.

I agree with the previous poster who said you only live once, go for it if you can at all afford it.

For us it was a $7,000.00 bill for 2 rooms at the Polynesian. With a family of 6, we found there to be a substantial cost savings by staying at a DVC resort over 2 connecting rooms at a deluxe resort.

It was easy...while researching for my 2003 trip, I read about DVC, called and requested the video, so I had an idea of what DVC was all about before we left. My family stayed at our offsite timeshare that we were quickly outgrowing. As my siblings married and had children, it was becoming apparent that I was soon to be relegated to the pull-out couch in the living room, with no privacy, and at the mercy of sharing someone's bathroom. I wasn't happy about it, but one day someone made a crack along the lines of "I was lucky to have a place to stay at all". Excuse me? I'm less of a member of the family because I'm not married and have no children? That day I was on the phone with DVC, making arrangements for a last minute tour and talk before I went to the airport. I took the papers with me, ran the numbers, and bought 150 points at Saratoga Springs within the week (at the time my choices were SSR and BWV...SSR won because of the extra twelve years, incentives, and DTD). I have since purchased two resales at the BWV, and have done add-ons at VWL and BCV through Disney. And now I get to go to WDW more than the rest of the family. :teeth:

I agree that this board is addictive. I don't know what it is about it, but when you have visited WDW and you see that SO MANY people are as ENFATUATED with it as you are it is very inviting. We had taken three trips in three years and said that we we would probably take a break :rotfl: from the WDW vavcations the next year and bought into DVC 3 months later!! We truly love the vacation experience we get every time we visit and bought without the tour, but we did order the video and avoid the kiosks. Now DW and I check the boards here on a daily basis. I think that aliens implant something into everyone who visits that make you HAVE to return REGULARLY!!! :confused3 Thanks to all you fellow DVCERS for all your input. :cheer2:

There is something in the chocolate or the Mickey Bars...or maybe its the pineapple in the Dole Whips.... I am convinced - and it is cummulative! lol the more I go, the more I want to go back. :earsgirl:

Well, I decided to buy because I knew I always wanted to go to WDW at least once a year. But I really wanted a way to go more than once a year. I had always had DVC at the back of my mind. I am 33 but am an only child, always lived at home (still do) due to parental health issues. My parents and I always tried to go once a year, mom's health permitting. Any time I would bring up DVC to her, she would say she'd love to do it, but could never afford it. I always shied away from the DVC booths, too, afraid I'd fall in love with the concept and then not be able to do it. When my cousins and I went on a girls only trip in Nov we kind of asked a couple of questions, but not many because I was scared they'd pressure me. When we discussed cost, it was actually cheaper than I thought. Well, this was our 2nd to the last day there, and my cousins didn't want to take the tour, but I kept thinking about it over and over. When I got back fom that trip, I just kept crunching #'s and realized I could afford it. Sad to say mom is no longer with us to be able to enjoy the DVC, at 1st I felt guilty thinking ''why couldn't I have bought this when she was here to enjoy it'' but I couldn't have afforded it then. Everyone says she probably be really proud of me for finally doing this and paying for it on my own. But she had a hand in it, because I'm using the money she left me to help pay for the DVC. I will be taking my dad 4/17 to his 1st trip to WDW since she's been gone and I want it to be special for him.
Sorry, I have rambled on long enough! :)

We first visited WDW together on our honeymoon in 1978. We visited off and on thereafter until 1992. We made our first long trip with children and toured DVC in 1992. We were staying at CBR. We liked the program but did not want to make the investment while having a home built and were unsure that we would be visiting WDW every other year (what we felt was required to get value out of it). Well the 1990s brought increasing interest in and frequency of visits to WDW. In 2002 we got an invitation for a very cheap holiday at AKL if we took the tour. We had been itching to stay at AKL and thought it was a perfect opportunity to do so. We started talking about DVC, how frequently we were visiting WDW and thought that this might be a very cost effective way to continue our visits to WDW. That led to research on the internet and finding the DIS as well as other sites. We bought two contracts before we even made our "tour trip". Then added on when we took our official tour. And AKL became our favoorite non-DVC resort and a very close second to OKW overall.

I am sorry for the loss of your Mother, I hope that you and your Dad go in April and have a WONDERFUL time---I am sure your Mom would want that. God Bless.

Thanks for the kind words :grouphug:
I'll be sure to show dad a great time!

We stayed at the Yacht Club in 1993 and looked into DVC but didn't purchase at that time. DH said if Disney ever had a DVC at the Beach/Yacht Club he would purchase. In 2002, we purchased at BCV and couldn't be happier! Annmarie

My wife held me at gun point. I had been thinking about it since 1995 and finally purchased after my son was born in 2001.

On the second day of our long awaited first trip to WDW in June 2002, DH turned to me and exclaimed "We are coming back!" After doing some research and lurking here we decided that DVC would be the best way to go. We figured out that in order to stay as long as we did (9 days) and at the same type of resort (POR) we would need to start putting away around $200/month--or we could purchase DVC at about the same amount/month. We also knew we wanted to bring friends and family and once we realized DVC would make that possible, we were sold. Ve bought a BCV, sight unseen and love it there!!! We haven't regretted our decision and our annual trips are priceless family time for us. Good luck with your decision!!

I've wanted to go to DisneyWorld ever since I was a child (around 5 or 6 yrs old). My Dh was able to take us and the kids lol to Disney for our first ever trip this past Jan. We had a lot of fun. It was my husbands first "real" vacation. I had the timeshare papers in Dec but didn't want to fill them out till I came back from Disney. I guess I wanted to make sure I liked it lol
We haven't seen any of the time shares except for the boardwalk..and we just took the plunge! I know this way it kinda makes us take a vacation. It gives us something to look forward to and plan for. I'm thinking about doing an add on in another year or two. I'm so happy that we can take our kids there. :goodvibes

We took our 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 year old to WDW - first trip with kids and my DH's second trip ever. And we realized with kids we'd be going back every few years. And we realized we were now addicted to Deluxe resorts and that very shortly we'd be uncomfortable with all of us in one room. So DVC made sense. We go every other year, stay in a one bedroom (or two bedroom if we bring guests) and the kids sleep on the hide-a-bed.

What convinced you all to go ahead and take the plunge?
Staying in a DVC 2 Bdrm for a week (on cash, no discount, ouch).

I LOVE the family photo that you have attached to your posts...can you tell how you guys did this? My DH and I had ours taken at the MVMCP and we were not impressed....our faces/hands were beet red and it wasn't cold---etc.
Thanks!

DH and I received an offer for one night free at POR with a requirement to take the tour for DVC. We had been going to WDW about every year. The free night was too good to pass up. We did this in Oct of 2002. We didn't buy then because we just didn't want to let go of that much money. But DH and I both got different and better paying jobs, and our son dropped out of college. The money thing was not a big issue then. So we went back in May 2003 and bought at the BCV. We have taken 2 trips to WDW since then. Last year in June we (10 family members) stayed in a 2 bedroom and a studio. We had a blast but boy did it rain a whole lot! :umbrella: DH and I went by ourselves in Sept and stayed at BWV in a studio. We had the perfect room looking out over the big pool and just a short walk from the lobby. No DVC vacation for us this year, but we are going to Europe to see the college dropout who is in the Navy in Italy. Can't wait for that. :sunny:

We had a wonderful trip in to the World and stayed in the cabins at Fort Wilderness. We LOVED having a kitchen and living area. While we were there we toured the DVC sales villas at the BWV. They were building the BCV and we walked over there to get an idea if we would like it. Well, the Beach Club is awesome, and we immediately returned to buy some points. Our guide actually tried to slow us down! Since then we have added on twice, have stayed at the BCV for three long vacations and love our purchase.

Funny thing is...last autumn we stayed at Fort Wilderness again - this time in our RV. We love it there too!
