How can YOU be judged/discriminated against?

I've got to add this comment....

I think overweight people are terribly terribly discriminated against. I think the attitude towards overweight persons has drastically changed during my lifetime negatively. I, for one, had dramatic weight gain with both pregnancies -- there was definite different treatment by others while I was carrying that extra weight. And, if any one does not believe that there is employment discrimination based upon appearance well then you must be living under a rock.

It all goes back to Charade's answer "human" -- I think this answer is brilliant. As long as there are humans -- humans will always find something to judge others by.

I haven't said this eloquently as I have wanted -- sorry, I hope you get the gist of my thought

I’m a woman.
I’m Latina.
I’m a lesbian.
I’m fat.
I’m an atheist.

Thanks all that did make list. Feel free to comment or ask questions. There are many things on here I never thought about like the name thing, the parenting thing, the disabilities or even the "twin size" thing.

As for the race thing, I think everyone at some point is discriminated against for whatever race. It maynot be as harsh as what others experience but it can get difficult for anyone. I dated a black guy in college. Imagine his mother's suprise when I went home with one weekend. I always answer with yes/no sir/ma'am when need be and I was mocked as finally getting some southern manners. I was joked about being rich and if my family wore bed sheets at night. It was mild compared to some but it did make an impact. I don't think everyone acts like that but I was really suprised when it happened.

Tina, I liked that in your origianl post you clarified judged or discriminated against. I wouldn't say I have encountered true discrimnation ever (thank goodness and my heart goes out to all of you who have), but I have been neagtively judged and had plenty of false assumptions made about me based on things on my list. It is that type of judgement and assuming which can lead to discriamination at times. I think your idea to point out how we all are different and all have things which people judge is great:thumbsup2 I also think Charade's anwer of "Im human" was spot on:)

Being 'judged' and actually being discriminated against are completely different in my mind.

I have often been judged but rarely been discriminated against. One can injure your feelings - the other can change your life.

I wonder if we might learn more about ourselves from making an actual honest list of the things we 'judge' in others and the ways in which we actually discriminate. :confused3

Some of these lists sound like brags than what you can be "discriminated"against.

What is considered discrimination? Is it as simple as what ANYONE can prejudge you on, favorably or unfavorably? In that case any and EVERYTHING.

People who deal with true negative discrimination everyday would find this baffling.

I think what we should do is consider what is it we discriminate against OTHERS. I had to do this just this past week and it was EYE opening. Sure you can pre judge someone because they're attractive... but the result is POSITIVE. If you pre judge someone because they're overweight, the result may be NEGATIVE.

Which of the lists get a positive reaction commonly and which ones get a negative one? I think that would make the lists more prospective.

I actually don't think I've ever been discriminated against, but here's my list anyway.

I'm female
I'm white
I didn't finish college
I grew up "well off"
I'm a lapsed Catholic
I'm pro-choice
I'm pro-death penalty (but for system reform)
I'm a Democrat
By the age of 25 I owned a condo, a new car, and had a "real" job to fully support myself. I've been told that really intimidates people, especially men.

And last but not least...

I'm a Cubs fan! :teeth:

I may be interpreting it wrong, but to me it seems like by making the list and thinking about the things you can be judged about, it makes you less likely to judge others.

Maybe. Surely you've heard comments of the nature that if someone is exceptionally attractive then he/she must be unintelligent. Or that she must be a slut. Or he must be on steroids.

That's an interesting idea. It would be very difficult to be that honest about our own judgements.
