How can YOU be judged/discriminated against?

I'm female.

I think that's been my biggest judgement or discrimination in my lifetime.

I'm a paraplegic.

That's the only thing I feel I have been judged/discriminated against.

I'm black
I'm a woman
I'm a single mother
I grew up and still live in a section of Brooklyn that considered inner city
I'm from Brooklyn
I'm pro-choice
I'm a teacher
I'm not a feminist

When I was young I was judged as being stupid simply because I was Polish. I had a teacher tell me one time when I was about 16 that I couldn't be Polish because I didn't look stupid. What kind of craziness is that. Back in the 70's it was the height of fun to make fun of Polish people. I walked away from more people telling Polish jokes just because they found out my maiden name was Polish. :sad2:

I don't mean to cause trouble, but I don't get why so many of you are putting here that you're white and that's how you're discriminated against. I'd love to hear a black person chime in on this, but I totally disagree. I feel that being white has given me many privileges in life that a black person might not have gotten just by the color of their skin. And being Christian? Folks, just try going out in public somewhere -- your school, your family, your friends -- and saying that you don't believe in god. Then you'll know that you're not truly discriminated against. You probably just hear some flak once in a while based on the behavior of the extremists in your group.

But my own list would be that I'm obese and atheist.

Think about it, it depends where you live, work or grew up. My DH & Uncle were beat up a few times for being white. They stayed in Philly to long after the block busting started.

Affirmative action has also effected white people with school & jobs.

I'm female & I'm a Disney Freak. That is the only thing I can think of.

I'm female
I am not "from here" (we move a lot--here changes)

I'm white.

I'm female.
I'm sometimes blonde.
I'm intelligent.
I have ample "twins".
I am an adult college student.
I got married young.
I had children young.

I know, how can someone be discriminated against by being intelligent... let me tell you. My name is Cindy- the name of many famous Playmates, nude models and Cindy Brady. All of which were not high on the intelligence scale.

As for the "twins", well, having a ditzy name and ample twins, people really think you are stupid. So I work extra hard to maintain my high GPA just to prove I am not.

I can't tell you how many job interviews I have been on, where the boss/supervisor was well thinking Cindy=stupid, or Cindy=sexpot before I even fully walked in the room. I even had a potential boss question my choice of major years ago by saying "theater majors, well don't make any money" while looking right at my twins which were properly covered.

What is block busting?

Plenty of white women benefitted from affirmative action.

Well on the Dis and somewhat in RL I have been judged for attachment parenting.

Thankfully, I don't think I've actually ever been discriminated against. However, I have been harshly criticized many many times. Some of the main reasons...

I don't attend church regularly (hardly at all, TBH)
WOHM
I live in a McMansion in suburbia, where I drive a minivan to my kids' soccer games and music lessons
I'm thin
BF in public
Employed an au pair (2, actually)
Pro-choice
Anti-universal healthcare

Hard to explain but I have lost like 80 percent of my vision. I see fine straight on with the proper light, thats why computers are so good for me because they are back lit. I have nearly non existent peripheral vision however. I bump into people shopping, have trouble seeing basic papers in bad light, can't read a menu in a restaurant. I can't tell you how many times people think I am stupid, not watching where I am going, spaced out etc. It's embarrasing to ask the waitress to read me the total on the bill when it comes, no telling what they think. If I tell people what is wrong with me I get even more embarassed due to their instant reaction, and I want people to just leave me alone sometimes LOL, which I know they are just trying to be kind when they ask me if I am ok because they think I might be slow or whatever it is they think about me.

I do not feel discriminated against and I do not feel that I am in any position to make a list like I see here. Frankly, I feel anything I could say would be in a slap in the face to those who truly have felt discrimination and judgement. I mean, yeah, I'm Jewish, but except for occasionally having to educate the truly ignorant, it hasn't negatively impacted me in any major way in my life.

I am human

I like this answer :thumbsup2

The big ones that I think have impacted my life...

1. I'm a Yankee that moved to the South (Pittsburgh to Mississippi -- lots of comments) -- ignorant people

2. I'm very dark skinned and have unusual features --Eastern European/Italian descent - - lots of people say I'm not white

3. I'm Russian Orthodox ---- my FIL tells me I worship a different God. -- ignorant people

4. I'm one of the 3 mothers who work at my children's school -- this has been the BIGGEST thing I have been discriminated against to date.

Thanks all that did make list. Feel free to comment or ask questions. There are many things on here I never thought about like the name thing, the parenting thing, the disabilities or even the "twin size" thing.

As for the race thing, I think everyone at some point is discriminated against for whatever race. It maynot be as harsh as what others experience but it can get difficult for anyone. I dated a black guy in college. Imagine his mother's suprise when I went home with one weekend. I always answer with yes/no sir/ma'am when need be and I was mocked as finally getting some southern manners. I was joked about being rich and if my family wore bed sheets at night. It was mild compared to some but it did make an impact. I don't think everyone acts like that but I was really suprised when it happened.

I'm female
I'm Catholic
I'm single
I don't have children-and never wanted to have them
I'm Liberal-but I used to be a Republican
I'm overweight
I don't wear skirts or dresses or follow fashion in any way

Having said ALL of that-I don't believe that I have suffered discrimination in any way-although I have been criticized and the subject of gossip. That's not really the same thing though.

These lists remind me of one of my favorite Peter, Paul and Mary songs. It's called "Don't Laugh at Me" and should be taught to every child. This is the last two bars of the chorus:

I'm Fat, I'm thin
I'm Short, I'm tall
I'm deaf, I'm blind
Hey aren't we all

Don't laugh at me, Don't call me names
Don't get your pleasure from my pain
In God's eyes we're all the same
Someday we'll all have perfect wings
Don't laugh at me

I am white
I am female
I am Polish
I am Catholic
I am a Republican
I'm a New Yorker
I never stopped working full-time when my kids were born
I like the Yankees
I don't care about fashion

I didn't go to college

I am female
I'm an 'older' mom
I am unattractive
I don't attend church
I am shy
I lack domestic skills
I work full-time
I'm a social drinker
I am unathletic
I am intelligent
