Can anyone tell me the size of standard coach airplane seats? I have never flown. We are planning a wdw trip at Tk, thinking about flying. I am a large woman and curious about the actual size of the seats. I have heard they were not real big. I checked wdwig at large didn't find it there. I would apreciate any help.:p

Hi

I think I heard one time they were 18 inches wide. Delta express is very small, however they have arms that go up. Some advice, if you are going with family, take the window seat and have a family member (child) sit in the middle. As you board you might want to ask the stewardess for an attachment for your seat belt if you think you may need one, they usually bring one over very discreatly. Hope this helps!

I am a rather large woman, and I find airline seats to be very uncomfortable. I know my butt is wider than 18" across (sadly). Also, I believe the maxium for the seat belts are 54" (a size 24), some are smaller.

I always take a window seat so I can lean towards the window and not be in anyone's way.

Someday I will have to do something about this!!

If you are traveling with someone you can request an aisle seat and a window seat leaving the seat between you open. Middle seats are filled last. If you are particularly big, you can ask if the seat is still open when you get to the gate and if they could delay putting someone between you and your compainion.

... a carseat which is wider than 16 inches probably will not be possible to properly secure in coach. I would take that as a guideline. Different airlines have different sized seats, and the width can also differ between models of aircraft. Some airline sites will post it on the seat map diagram, if there is one. However, I'd say 16-17 inches is about average width for coach.

The width of the seat depends on the type of aircraft and the airline. For example Most Airlines will have 5 across seating on an MD-80 or DC-9 where Midwest Express only has 4 across. Some airlines will have 9 across on a 777 or L1011 where some charter airlines will have 10 across. Here are some URLS for reference..

Keep in mind when looking at those charts that while they say a 727 has a 19 inch seat width it was probably measured as cushion width, not the width between the armrests.

Just a note about the seat belts. When you board ask the stewadess for a extension belt. She should give you a belt like the ones the use for demonstation. this makes buckleing a breeze for larger people. Just remember to do it while boarding cause they tend to run out sometimes. HTH

When I was larger a few years ago (woman's 26/28) I flew NWA and the seats were VERY uncomfortable. I was literally squeezed into an aisle or window seat. If I had known then about Midwest Express, I would have GLADLY paid the extra $100.00 or $150.00 to fly them because all their planes are like flying first class and the seats are larger. All rows are two across and the seats are leather.

Now that I'm smaller (women's 14/16) I can fit into the smaller coach seats, but prefer Midwest Express (only found out about them on my last trip in Feb) because of their superior service and comfort.

Hope you have one in your area! They are absolutely terrific!
