We love the ocean, but hate mosquitos, gnats, etc...

How big is the bug problem at Vero Beach? Are there certain times of the year when it's worse than others?

Thanks

We were in VB last year and the love bugs were so bad we could not even go to the pool at all. I understand this was the worst year they've had for love bugs.

What month and week did you go?

We were at VB last May from 5/13 thru 5/16, spent a good part of each day at the pool and had very little bug problems......however, I will say that was the week of all the coastal fires (we had detours from Orlando because of the fires) so possibly the smoke in the area kept the bugs away. We were at AKV from 5/11 to 5/13 and spent the day on 5/12 at the pool and the lovebugs were around.......not unbearable, but, they were there.

May 5-12 and it was 2007 not 2008.

Hope that was an anomaly. One of the few months we have NOT been to VB in is May and we have never encountered love bugs there. But we will be there the first week of THIS May.

You will have love bugs that week, hopefully not as bad as we did. I have NEVER seen them that bad and we've lived in FL for 20 years. The locals said it was far worse than normal, hope they were right. BTW, they were the worst the first couple of days and started to ease up somewhat as the week went along.

So what exactly are 'love bugs'- we're going (to orlando) in september this year (the third week), and I'm worried as I've heard they are out then as well.
Thanks!

Here are some images Normally early May and Sept, it is a little variable and I'm not sure the exact time normally for Sept for the area.

Wonderful - we're doing our first trip there May 14-17th. :headache: I'll cross my fingers that this is a good year without too many. We have very few bugs in NV and I like it that way!

When I say we couldn't go to the pool, I mean that even walking outside to get to the care was a problem. You could have filled a 5 gallon bucket in 10 minutes with no problem. Apparently they were very concentrated right at the coast due to wind and fronts, they were no where near that bad in Tallahassee or on the drive up or down. By the end of the week they were much better. They usually only last a week or two.

The Love Bugs are a nuisance, particularly to auto finishes and the amount of windshield washer solvent you go through. But they don't bite.

The no-see-ums have a nasty bite and you never know they are there.

Oh, ok - I feel better now. :rotfl2:

I'll have to call upon my experience growing up in MN with boxelder bugs and asian beetles which have their good and bad years too. Nothing we can do about it but maybe we'll bring a couple more books to read JIK - and hope for the best. I've been to Orlando a few times in early May and once in Sept. and can't remember seeing any of these little loves. Maybe I'll luck out again - or maybe it's my year to pay my dues. :scared: I'm not certain what DH is going to think of this - he tends to hate bugs much more than I do.

Forget it. We live in the same region of the country and Boxelders are impossible to eradicate. Same as lady bugs. Some years are bad and some years you don't see them much. Just be happy with no (or few) hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, wildfires, floods (at least not me). I worry about this year's snake population though. Last year we had seven show up around our house (one 6+ ft.). Love bugs... Their just, you know, making a family.

:goodvibes

After years of them in MN I know of no way to kill them except the old fashioned squishing method. The best thing is to try and keep them out of the house and make certain that you have good seals and caulk on your windows and doors - especially those on the east and south sides since they like the early sun and warmth.

We were at VB several years ago in August and i had a terrible experience with the no seeums. My family and I were out in the evening and I had shorts and a sleeveless top on. I could feel hundreds of those little buggers biting me. They left DH, DS & DD alone but I spent several sleepless nights scratching. We went to the local CVS and bought benadryl and calamine lotion but that did not totally ease the itch. Afterwards, my extremities were covered with tiny red spots. I love VB but if we ever go back in the summer months I will wear long pants and long sleeves in the evenings and make sure I slather on bug repellent underneath!

We went to VB the first week of Oct. in 2006 and the love bugs were bad, but not unbearable. They did land on you and on the beach towels, etc, and they did get annoying after awhile. We have also been to DW in May and Sept and have dealt with them at both times. They are just annoying.

Are the no see ums only at vero or are they also at Disney world?

So please tell me how bad they can be in October. Have a trip planned then and would like to know. We went in October in 2007 and I don't remember these little guys bothering us or even being around then.
