How are transferring points handled?

... just when I thought I knew how to handle renting my points, a couple of individuals have asked me if my points are transferrable. They are, but I am wondering how this transaction is handled so both parties feel secure. Since the points cannot be automatically transferred back to my account if the buyer doesn't pay, it would seem that the buyer should pay in full before the transfer. Is this what is typically done?

I did a transfer into my account a couple of months ago and paid 1/2 up front and then the other 1/2 after the transfer went through. That seemed fair to both sides.

I asked for payment up front, but called the second I got my e-mail from paypal, then immediately called the person I was transferring to and gave them the transaction number so they could confirm.

The time I didn't get payment up front (it was only for 1 point, but it's really more the principle of the thing), I got stiffed. (You know who you are.)
