How about those sofabeds?

My wife and I are considering purchasing into the DVC and she is concerned that our children would have to sleep on sofa beds instead of real beds. Are the sofabeds comfortable? Do you feel a metal bar when you lay on the bed? Can you comfortably fit two people on the bed? What have your experiences been like? Thanks!

Welcome to the Dis. The sofabeds are not bad as far as sofabeds go. Our teenage children sleep on them without complaints. My 75 year old mother slept on one in May and did not complain. I think she would have been happier in a regular bed, but we did not get a 2 BR with 2 beds in it. To accomodate our teenagers when they were both coming, we would bring an aerobed so they didn't have to share a sofabed. That worked out very well. But AKV 1 BR has a sofabed and a sleeper chair and is supposed to sleep 5, so that would have helped. Hope this helps, good luck with your decision. There is alot of useful information on the Disboards. We have owned for 6 years and have never had one regret. :)

My 80 yr old mother-in-law slept on one and didn't say anything about it being uncomfortable.

Teenage son, 17, was on one last week and said it was just fine. We had told him that we could pull the mattress off and put it on the floor if needed but he said he was ok as is. Believe me, if it had been a problem we would have known about it!!;)

At SSR last week the sofa bed was the kind that did not have the metal bar. Am I right to think that most of the sofa beds are this kind now? My kids did not complain. DS,15 was in the living room and my 2 DD's, 11 & 10 were on the one in the studio lock off.

We have used the new style sofa beds in the BWV and they are comfortable, no metal bar. I would not hesitate to do it again.

Well, the sofa bed in our room at VWL was HORRIBLE in April 2008. The paper thin mattress and the bar in the middle were not comfortable at all for an adult. DH and I took turns sleeping on that bed ... and, yuck, I was wishing we had booked a room at OKW where the studios have 2 real beds.

Here's hoping VWL gets decent sofa sleepers soon ...

We are at SSR right now. 2 studios and a 2bdrm, all 3 sofa beds being used. No complaints, there isn't a metal bar. MIght depend on the resort.

I can also confirm this. I haven't slept on them but my teenaged daughters have and they always wake up with a backache.

They slept on the new one at AKV in June and didn't have this problem at all.

Hopefully VWL will change out those mattresses and SOON. Offering a sofa bed that is very uncomfortable just doesn't cut it - at least not in my book.

Oh no... I'll have the sofa bed at VWL! :scared: Maybe I'll ask mousekeeping to bring several extra blankets to put under the sheet?

Any news as to when VWL may be getting new sofa beds?

Our 1st DVC experience was at OKW - thankfully we had a 2BR and no one had to sleep on the sofa that time. Last summer we were SO impressed with the sofa at BWV, since we were only getting a 1BR. My then-DD6 wanted to sleep in the pack&play:rolleyes1 so the other 2 slept on the sofa. This summer the 2 girls were on the sofa at SSR - not memory foam, like at BW, but still comfortable. DS10 put the sofa cushions on the floor and made himself a bed. He could have fit on the sofa mattress, but didn't want to share with the girls. We had a great time and it worked out well, but from now on, we will try to get 2BRs, simply so that our living room is not always a bedroom!

Overall, I have been impressed with Disney's sofa beds. We thought the one at BW had a Thomasville tag on it, so we went to a Thomasville store, hoping to find a similar model for our own home - it was that comfortable. Unfortunately, either we had the wrong brand or that set-up is exclusively for resort furniture - Thomasville's sofa selections were antiquated and frumpy, IMHO.

BTW, we recently visited the GCV model at DL. It has a sofa AND a fold-down wall bed that was really cool. It looked like a nice wood built-in entertainment unit, but the lower half was really a bed that you could unlatch and fold down. I didn't lay on it, but it looked comfortable!

Does anyone know what type of sofabed is at HHI? Is it the old type with the bar or one of the newer models? My 75 year old aunt will be sleeping on it when we go there in October.

My mom slept on the one at AKV, and she didn't like it at all. (And she's usually not a complainer.) We finally put the comforter from the bed underneath the "fitted" sheet, and she said that really helped it. I went out and bought a 2" bed topper to take along on the next trip.

We have stayed in studios at BWV and SSR. My DH has a bad back and preferred sleeping on the pull out sofa to the queen bed. Said it was more comfortable. My Father also said the pull out at BWV was more comfortable to him than the queen bed, funny I know!

We were at OKW last week and my DH & I slept on the sofa bed. I have a bad back and could not stand the lack of a mattress. My DD slept in another room on the sofa bed and had no problems. The sofa beds did not have any sort of mattress and were hard as a rock. We ended up putting the cushions for the sofa on the bed and then put the sheets over it. My DH was quite comfortable on the sofa bed but because of my back, I could not handle it. I think it just depends on you.

We've stayed in BCV studios and the kids have slept on the pull out with no complaints.
But next year we will be in a 2 bedroom with our kids on the living room sofa bed, are they as comfortable?

OUr kids sleep on the BWV sofa beds all the time and they think they are very comfortable. They are easy to pull out and everyhting stashed in convenient pockets underneath. They are comfortable and ingenious.

We just came back from HHI last night. I'm sorry to say, I think the sofabeds at HHI are horrible. They were uncomfortable to sit on, let alone sleep on. I'd rethink offering your 75 yr old aunt a bed, or even an inflatable mattress would be better (IMHO).

My girls (11 and 12) slept on the sofa bed at BCVs in a 1BR, and they woke up with back aches every day. We learned our lesson and are going to use our points to get legit beds!

Best of luck
Diane
