On the Disney website, there is a picture of a family riding horses on the beach at Hilton Head. I have searched for information on this, but am unable to find a place that rents horses on the beach. Has anyone here done this? Where did you go?

Thanks,

JMD

There are at least two places that I know of that will ride horses. THe most popular is at Sea Pines. That is a private community that has stables. You have to pay a $5 car toll to get through the gate. THe stables are on the right after you get through. You should call first to make a ressie to ride.

THe other place is off the main road leading off the Island.

Neither place will "rent horses" and let you go on your merry way. It is a guided ride that might include some 25-20 other riders.

Disney used to have an arrangement with Sea Horse Farms, but I think now they just give you the info at the desk and let you make your own arrangements.

Is it a walk on the beach or can you trot/canter and go into the water?

I believe most of the horse rides are n-t (nose to tail) walks. They may allow some trot/canter, maybe a gallop -- it seems to vary widely -- best to ask when you make reservation. As to going into the water, unlikely. I saw this once with an inexperienced rider on a horse that decided it is time for a roll in the water :)

I'm thinking that the photo with horseback riders on the beach at HH might be just a "staged" photo. Even dogs aren't permitted on the beach during the main swimming hours (10-5 or something similar during the summer) and at other times the dogs are supposed to be leashed at all times.

We've been to HH several times and have never seen horses or hoof prints on the beach. Now at Sea Pines, there may be some homeowners who have horses and they may ride their own horses at non-prime beach hours. For a tourist, I would think that horseback riding on the beach wouldn't be permitted.

We have gone riding with Sea Horse Farms every time we have gone to Hilton Head and Yes you ride on the beach. You do not go in the water but along the water line in the hard packed sand. They ride in a more private area, not near the hotels. We have not used the stables at Sea Pines, so I am not sure where they go on their ride, but Sea Horse does go to the beach.
