horror stories!

We of course think its hot in August but we would be hot at home too so whats the difference! We love the lack of crowds and the free dining promo has been great too!:) We will once again be braving the heat to enjoy Disney, everthing has airconditioning so you can always find a place to cool down, I am the drink pusher on our trips, you must drink so much in your water bottle to go to the next attraction, my kids think its some crazy disney rule:rotfl:

Yes, it's super hot and humid, but I've been in New York in the summer before and I thought it was just as hot. It's not so much the heat, as it is how much you mind being SWEATY. It is totally bearable as long as you don't care about how your hair looks after 5 minutes outside, and you don't wear too much makeup. Bring some wipes, I think Dove or Lever, some soap company makes them. When you feel too gross, go in the air conditioned bathroom and freshen up. My newest discovery for the Florida heat ... Tiger Woods Gatorade. Has more electrolytes than regular gatorade, and water doesn't replace the electrolytes lost when you sweat. This is really important when you will be outdoors most of the day! Oh, and most Florida schools are back in session 8/19, so the crowds should be significantly smaller than the rest of the summer! Have a great trip...no trip to Disney is a waste of money!

Our first trip was in August. Yes, it was hot & humid, just like it was in Illinois when we left for our trip. Here's what I learned:
1. Go to EMH when possible.
2. Plan to leave park by noon & hit the resort pool. Then go to a park in the evening.
3. Put a wet wash cloth in a ziploc bag. It felt great to wipe down w/a cool wet rag.
4. Wear very breathable clothes.
5. Take more clothes. I went through at least 2 outfits a day.
6. Hats/visors really did help
7. Water, water, water!!!!!
8. Relax & enjoy your trip. Focus on the positive!!
9. Schedule next 2 trips in April:rotfl2:

As others have already said, it will really depend on your overall heat and humidity tolerance. We are from Brooklyn, NY and we went in the middle of July. I have also been there as a kid (ages 8 and 12) in mid-August. I was fine. The kids were fine this trip (ages 3 and 1). DH was also fine, although he did say to kick him if he ever talks about moving to Florida! But, he also said he would go back in the summer! Here are some things we did:

-I used Tour Guide Mike and followed all of his advice. It worked. We waited in very minimal lines, if any at all, got to the parks super early (45 min. before opening), and left at the latest 2PM. And we saw EVERYTHING on our list!
-As I said, we got to the parks very early, when it was still in the low 70s outside.
-Left by 2PM, the height of the afternoon heat is between 2 and 3PM. Rested in the hotel room and it was wonderful! Also took afternoon showers which helped.
-Returned to the park for dinner around 5:30, or we ate at a resort hotel restaurant at around the same time.

The parks were extremely crowded, but we still had no problem doing everything we wanted to do without having to wait long. The longest we waited was...DH went to ride Everest at AK while I took the kids on the Triceratop Spin. He texted me that the standby wait was 30 minutes so he was gonna do that instead of FastPassing it. So while he did that the kids and I enjoyed DinoLand USA! It was great. We did 2 EMH mornings out of 5 days at the parks. I listened to all the advice I got here and also on TGM regarding the best times to see the attractions, and everything worked! Occasionally (and really, only a very few times), we had to zig-zag a little bit, but it was totally worth it!

The kids never once complained about the heat, and we kept them well-hydrated. That is the key. I brought a small cooler (they allow up to a certain size) with ice packs, bottled water and bottled juice to keep everyone hydrated. This worked wonders. Any CS restaurant will also give you a cup of water if you ask them.

We never got the misting fans, and felt we did not need them. However many people in the park had them and this is of course a matter of personal preference.

Many attractions also have indoor waiting areas, especially at Epcot. This was lucky for us since our hottest day was at Epcot.

With some good planning, which I find a lot of fun to do anyway, you can have just as good a time in August as you would in, say, March. There are still many ways to avoid the crowds, as long as you get there very early. I can't even begin to tell you how many people were first entering the park when we were leaving in the afternoon! This is due to a couple of different factors, such as park-hopping (coming from a different park from earlier in the day), and some people prefer to sleep in late and go to the parks later. I would rather get up early and then rest in the afternoon before dinner. It made us enjoy our dinners more also!

Again, it depends on your tolerance for heat. When I booked out trip, I thought to myself, would I rather go in the winter or the summer? Well, we chose summer for three reasons. One, our older son is in school and I do not take him out of school for vacations. Two, we are teachers and are off the entire summer so we had more time (drove down there and had a 2-week trip total...got to visit some family in southern Florida also). And three, although I know it is rare, going in the winter (either Christmas time or February break) could be risky because sometimes it is 30 degrees in Orlando in the winter. I personally would rather tour a theme park in the heat than in 30 degrees while wearing a winter coat! This was something we considered.

I have also learned not to listen to people. While they mean well, I can't even begin to tell you how many people told me that we would all be miserable going in the summer, and the kids would have constant meltdowns. Well, they did not know that I did NOT plan to run my kids ragged to the point where they couldn't take it anymore! And kids will be kids of course, but no MAJOR meltdowns or tantrums for us! All it takes is careful planning. And those same people who told me that were shocked when we got home that we had such a great time. They also said that they would have been the first ones in the parks AND the last ones to leave, WITHOUT going back to the room! So there you go. I would never torture my kids, or myself for that matter, with a plan like that!

Oh, one more thing...it was hotter here in Brooklyn, NY than in Disney the entire time we were there! I spoke to my mother one day, and it was 94 degrees and 90% humidity in Brooklyn. The same day we went to the Animal Kingdom. The high was 85 in Orlando with around the same humidity level as Brooklyn. So, you never know, depending of course on your region of the country!

We always go in August and I won't lie - it is hot. However, it can't be that bad because we keep returning!:lmao:

Honestly, there are a lot of airconditioned attractions to give a break from the sun and heat. When the heat is getting to us, we either take a nice long lunch or find a long show or ride that is indoors (or grab a mickey bar!). It really isn't that horrible. The worst park for the heat is Animal Kingdom because there isn't as many indoor attractions there. MK, Epcot, and MGM are much more bearable.

Bring a mister, drink lots, and take some afternoon breaks if you need to. We stay all day in the parks, but I totally understand why many people go back to the resort for a swim if the heat is getting to them.

Go with a positive attitude and enjoy!

This will be our third time going in July/August and August/Sept. It's hot but not unbearable. make sure you stay hydrated and you should be fine. We usually go for 10+ days. What works for us is plenty of water and breaks, We usually have a day we spend at the pool and we do the water parks. The only time I feel uncomfortable is when we are in AK. Then I will go see The Festival OF The Lion King! Don't worry have a great time :)

Hi, we live in NJ and just returned from 10 days in July and it was freakin hot. August was no better when we went a few years ago at the end of Aug. The best thing to do is to except the heat, know what you are going in to. As long as you are mentally prepared you won't get aggravted with it. I knew the heat was going to be bad and it didn't bother me mentally. My DH was more hot then I was, he didn't prepare him self for the heat. Use a misting fan, do the extra magic hours at night, that helped so much. Don't rush just enjoy being at Disney and take breaks in air conditioned buildings.

its hot.. but you knew that already.. We live in georgia, so it doesn't bother me too much,(but I also run daily in the heat) whereas my husband isn't as adapted. Most of the parks are well designed enough that you can get out of the conditions.. The hardest one imo, is animal kingdom (seems the greenery makes it all the more humid). Echoing what others have said wear lighter weight and colored fabrics, drink lots, take your time, and perhaps take a swim break during the warmest part of the day. Have a great trip!!!

I agree. Epcot was our hottest day, but AK was definitely the most humid! I took a nice long shower after we left that one! We went for EMH and arrived before 7:30, did the Safari first, and got out of there BEFORE 2PM! Actually, I tried to take DS3 to the 1:30 showing of the Nemo musical (DS1 would not have sat through it...he had a hard time sitting through the Lion King show, so DH was going to stay with him and look in some shops, etc.). Unfortunately, they stopped letting people in (they were at capacity) just before they got to us! The rope was re-connected right in front of us. I was aggravated because one guy and his family (who were a few people behind us) ran ahead of everyone and cut into the line. There were 5 or 6 of them. We would have gotten in if he did not do that. Everyone made comments to them but they just ignored everyone, and no cast member saw it.

Anyway, it was not so bad not getting into the show. We just left the park. It was around 1:20, so we got out of the park and onto the bus around 1:30PM. Man was it humid there!

Take a shower at night and in the morning! Morning showers always make me feel fresh before going out. Even if the humidity does hit you in the face when you walk outside!:scared1: Drink lots of water like everyone says. If you have a fridge in the room, you may want to freeze bottles of water for the parks. I carried one of those little fans that you get at the dollar store. It doesn't have the mister on it but it works great. You can wear it around your neck and its not heavy and bulky. While you are in line, you can use it and not get anyone else wet, even though they probably wouldn't mind! Just think happy thoughts and you'll be fine.:yay:
