We are possibly thinking about a DVC contract and need a little bit of help.
I have seen a 170 points contract available on a resale with use year of Aug, thus 170 points coming this Aug. Would I be correct in saying that I could bank those points and then we would get 170 more in aug 2012 and then 11 months before july 2013 I could book at stay at maybe OKW with borrowing from next year If we don't have enough. Would I lose the 2011 points or are they safe to use ? We would not be going back till 2013. There after would would like to travel approx every 2 years.

Many thanks for your help.

With Resale, keep in mind that the Aug 2011 points might not be there, if they have already been borrowed into the 2010 Use year. Assuming they are there, then yes, they could be banked into your 2012 Use Year. This would give you 340 points for a reservation in July 2012 (Careful though, they expire at the end of that month - no changes/no cancellations).

traveling in july with an august UY is a risky idea if you ever need to cancel as the other poster has said.

ideally you want a UY month that starts before you usually would travel, and preferably you would never travel in the last 3 months or so of your use year.

To amplify a little on the previous two posts regarding an August UY with a July vacation:

With DVC, you have the ability to bank 100% of your points at any time during the first 8 months of your Use Year. So, with an August UY, you would be able to bank through the end of March.

One difficulty comes in when you have to cancel a reservation after your banking deadline. For example, if you booked a July 2012 vacation and had to cancel after the end of March 2012, you would not be able to bank your 2011 points into the next UY.

The other potential issue you need to understand is that both banking and borrowing are irreversible transactions. Points cannot be un-banked or un-borrowed. So in my example above, canceling after the banking window closed would mean that the points from all 3 UYs would expire on July 31, 2012 (the banked 2010 points because they can't be banked again, all of the 2011 points because you'd be past the deadline, and whatever points you borrowed from 2013 because you can't un-borrow).

One thing that is not clear from your OP is whether you understand that UY has NOTHING to do with when you can make reservations. You can make reservations at your home resort 11 months from your scheduled arrival date, or non-home resorts 7 months from arrival.

Many thanks for your help, yip i have read many posts so I think I understand the use year scenario. I THINK I was wanting to know that if, we were to purchase a resale contract that had points coming in 2011 and 2012 and so on, and we were to travel in July 2013, would the points available from those years, be able to be used in 2013. As that would make the difference to the amount of points in a contract that we would need to buy. As we would be travelling from the UK , we would plan to stay at say ,OKW for 2 weeks using points so its more the banking and borrowing I am not too sure about. We would plan to visit every 2 years thereafter so would like to make sure we had enough points each time.

Hope someone can answer, many thanks .

Sorry another question what would be the best use year for a july vacation, as for the forseeable future it would be end june/ july that we would have to do. DH a college lecturer.

Assuming an August use year, a July 2013 vacation falls within the 2012 use year (8/1/2012 - 7/31/2013).

You can pay for that vacation with 2011 use year points (after you bank them), 2012 use year points and points from the 2013 use year (if you borrow them).

A December, February, March, April or June use year would work for late June- July vacations. April & June would be best.

Ideally, you want a use year that is just before the time you usually travel. That give you the maximum time to reschedule a cancelled trip or to bank the points if you can't use them before the end of the use year.

many thanks, I think its all a bit clearer now. :thumbsup2

If I understand your question, here is the information I think you are looking for:

Aug 1, 2011 - You receive 170 points. You bank 170 points into 2012. Once banked, these points are good from Aug 1, 2012 - July 31, 2013.

Aug 1, 2012 - You receive 170 points. You have 170 banked, for a total of 340.

Beginning on Aug 1, 2012, you can also borrow up to 170 points from your 2013 UY. So from Aug 1, 2012 - July 31, 2013, you could use up to a total of 510 vacation points for one or more vacations.

What people have pointed out in previous posts is you risk losing all 510 points if you book a July 2013 trip and then cancel. Your 2011 points will expire July 1, 2013 no matter what. For the points you get on Aug 1, 2012, you have through March 2013 to bank if you don't think you'll use them, but those points will expire on July 31, 2013 if not banked. Lastly, any points you borrow will expire at the end of the UY you borrowed them into, so like your banked points, borrowed points will expire at the end of July 2013 no matter what.

Take the same scenario with a February 2013 trip in mind. If you canceled the February trip, you would still have through the end of July to book, and you could still bank your 2012 points if you had to. You would be forced to use the banked and borrowed points (340) by the end of July or they would expire.

Lastly, my husband is a teacher. We travel mostly spring break (March/April) and June/July/Aug. With that said, an ideal UY for us if Feb or March. If you will always come June/July, I would look for a June, April or Feb UY.

Thank you so much that is very clear now. Its a lot to learn before taking the plunge!!! :thumbsup2
