Hoop Dee Doo or Luau???

I've been to the Hoop Dee Doo about 3 times over the years, last time in 2000. For our trip next spring I was considering going back to HDDR to take our 5 and 3 year old DDs for the first time. My DH and I love the show and all it's hokiness and I think our girls would too. However, since my girls are into the whole "hula girl" and Lilo thing right now, I was wondering if maybe I should consider the Luau? We'll be eating at the Poly for other meals (where I'm sure the food will be better than the Luau's), so which do you think would be a better choice? The last time I went to the Luau was 1983 when I was 8. I remember getting refill upon refill of coke and using the keychain flashlight I bought at Epcot to try and see what food was on my plate--man was it dark that night!

The Luau was fun and my girls liked it. If you are going in the heat of the year, try and get the last show, because of the heat. Even at 5:30 in the shade with fans blowing on you from above on the ceiling, it is still hot, for us anyway. We were there in July.

The food was not that bad at all. We thought it was very good. We have eaten at 'Ohanas and Kona Cafe and love both very much, and the Luau food was fine.

Try and make your ADR as soon as you can so you can get a seat close to the front. I think they assign seats according to when you make your ADR.

Thanks for the tip on the heat. I tend to forget that it will be outside, versus the cooled air at Pioneer Hall. We are going in May so I'm hoping it wouldn't be quite so hot. Glad to hear that you found the food to be OK. I think I read your food reviews from your most recent trip.

I would go to the luau any day over HDDR. But I think it just comes down to personal preference.

My DH is wild about HDDR, would probably go every trip. The 3 sons fell in LOVE with the luau (boy that looks wrong no matter how you spell it) they ask to go back to it every time! We have a good time at both, love the unusual food at the luau, the food at HDDR is plentiful and more mainstream.

I'm excited about all the good feedback on the luau! :cheer2:  Now I just have to wait for the end of September.

Just need to add my comments of HDDR. We went last March with our 2 boys ages 3 & 6 (at the time). We all loved it! My oldest son is now asking to go to HDDR next time we go, so I guess we'll make it an annual thing. We enjoyed the interaction and the food. :)

We will be experiencing our first Luau at Disney in a couple of weeks.
We are doing this on our day of arrival. Staying at CR and monorail over to Poly.
We currently have a 5:30 reservation and am now thinking about making it later. Is it unbearable in the heat. Starting to get nervous.

We have done the HDDR once pre kids and once with kids. We did not enjoy at all. The only redeming feature was going to the outdoor movie and meeting Chip and Dale after the show.
