Homework during State Testing?

I have one in 1st, 3rd and 5th grade. The 1st grader has homework, but it is given by the week and is not due until next Tuesday. The 3rd grader had a small amount of homework both days so far. The 5th grader has homework if her teacher wakes up on the left side of the bed. She also gives homework is she wakes up on the right side of the bed. She would give homework if she jumped straight up and off the foot of the bed. This is also the same teacher that stated my child was having a hard time in math because I took her out of school early 2 months in a row (on a Friday) to go to Disney! :lmao: My fault that she missed math those two days. Let's not look at the fact that dd is in SAIL every Wed for 4 HOURS and misses math once a week. :confused3 We are scheduled for a spring break at Disney, leaving April 7, so I have decided not to send her at all that day! :rotfl2: That way I can't be blamed for her math problems..... Yes, they are testing this week, but she has not sent home one note to let us know the schedule. I detest a Disney hater! :teacher:

My DD is also taking state tests this week (6th grade), although they have no homework. And they are allowed to chew gum (I have no idea why)...that is the biggest deal amongst the students.

From what I have heard, chewing gum keeps you alert, especially if it's mint flavored. :confused3

From my own personal experience, I know that when I'm taking a test, chewing gum helps me with my nervousness/anxiety. I've got a test tomorrow and my pack of gum is already in my purse. :hyper: :hyper:

LOL, that is exactly why they are allowed. The teacher mentioned anxiety and nervousness and they all suddenly 'remembered' that they DO, in fact, get really anxious and nervous when taking these tests and chewing gum sure would help, LOL!

It's just funny how the gum thing really sparked a great interest in test week.

The sweetpea was allowed to chew "minty" gum during testing. And to be honest, im not sure if she had homework or not. Shes a responsible kid and always does it right after school before I get home.

My dd's teacher actually gave them the gum last week before FCATs. That was the most exciting part of dd's day. First thing she mentioned everyday when getting into the car. Not that she got to chew it but that her teacher ACTUALLY gave it to them.

my 5th grader is taking pssa's this week. Mostly no homework. But both nights she had info she had to look up on the computer for class? But she also has a project due at church on Sunday. She is getting first Holy Communion before Easter.

DD is in 7th grade and her school does not give any homework the 2 weeks they are testing. Even though they don't test everyday or even all day they just put a ban on homework. The only work she has done is on her History Fair project which is due in late April.

Your kids don't take practice exams? My DD came home with a packet an inch thick that she had to do -- filled with practice questions! That was in the 3rd grade. This year she did it in school.

They really stress these kids out when it comes to the state testing. Why stress them with homework?
They do practice, but that's all before the exams start. Once exams start they are done with the practicing so I don't think it's a big deal if they have homework.

Here in Delaware, no homework for my third grader and second. For their grades, homework is light anyway.

No homework for 5th and 7th grader here during PSSA testing. The 11th graders get to home early in the afternoon the 2 days they are testing.

No homework for my 5th grader during state tests.

My ds are in 6th & 4th grade. Both are taking Isats this week & both have had homework to bring home. Makes no sense to me :confused3

I am delighted to say that we aren't getting any homework this week! Yay!

My son is in the middle of taking his 4th grade NJ ASK testing. The past few weeks, they were assigning practice homework like crazy. I was ripping my hair out over the amount of homework he was getting, but we knew it was because of the testing. Whatever regular school work they weren't covering in class because of ASK practice, they were sending home to do--and that was on top of ASK practice homework.

I think the worst of the school year is over now that the testing is almost done. And it's not a moment too soon. We're starting baseball practice this weekend, and that's my kid's best sport. It'll be wonderful not to worry about mountains of homework on practice and game nights.

My kids ALWAYS get homework during testing weeks. And, the HW is more than usual.

A group of us actually went to speak to the principal at the time. The arguement was that the kids could not loose a week of school for testing.

I completely disagree.

:sad2:

That's something the schools need to take up with our government then. I hate high stakes testing.

When your kids are going through state testing, do the teachers give them homework?

I'm a little ticked about this! DD's in the 4th grade and she's going through her state testing this week and had homework over the weekend, last night and tonight. All the 4th graders have homework, but the 5th graders don't.

:confused3

That just doesn't seem right to me.

We live in Illinois where we have "ISAT" testing. They alternate the tests by one year giving like social studies and math and the next reading and science, then the next back to social studies and math again. Since they only spend Half a day testing and break it up over a week, they also have some regular classes and therefore regular homework. My kids consider testing weeks a vacation. LOL like getting to watch a movie instead of sit through a lesson. But the test are easy for them. The only one is the writing test that they administer in later years. My DD struggles with that one a little. Otherwise, they are always at least in the 95th percentile or above.

My 3rd grade and 5th grade dd's had the DSTP's the end of last week and through Thursday this week. Neither had written homework just reading a minimum of 20 minutes each night.

Honestly, mine needed the homework break, they both have been really wound up afterschool and in bed and asleep early without prompting from me. They have both been reading in bed only to fall asleep at least 1/2 hour before they normally do.

Tomorrow is the final day of testing and we will all be releived to get back to a normal school day!
