Homemade Halloween Costumes????

I have 5 kids and spent the past 14+ yrs making costumers. However there have been a few times that the kids wore store bought ones(oh the horror....so punny!).

Sometimes you can get a great sale and find out the it is more expensive to make the costume.

I have used sweatsuits alot to make:

Batman
Superman
Spiderman
Skeleton - my fav to make
Pirate
Cowboy
Pizza
and more.

Last year I found an M&M costume for $5. DD loved it, wore it and is planning on wearing it again...so that is money well spent.

Let us know what u decided.

last year my son was a washing machine. :)
He covered a large box in white contact paper, bunched up some rags and covered it with a see-through lid from take-out and edged it with silver tape. He made knobs and labels. His head fit through the top, and we attached a small laundry basket on top so his head was in it. We threw in more laundry and attached a small box of Tide. It was a HUGE hit, but a bit uncomfortable.

We have always made costumes too, but then we do something with DS's wheelchair.

He has been

Lion

Race car driver with wheel chair as the car (out of card board box)

Pirate with a pirate ship (pcv piping and cheap fabric)

Chef (turned tray into a cutting board) Little sister was a pea pod

Batman with the batmobile (card board box)

Bulldoze driver in a bulldozer (again card board box) Little sister was the stop and go girl (made a stop and go sign out of card board and leftover pvc pipe)

Beekeeper (cheap painters suit $2.00) sister was a honey bee

Knight with sword on a horse (card board) Sister was a princess

Pirate again (used old pvc piping from 5 years ago) and little sister was Elizabeth Swan

This year we are turning his chair into a robot. :)
Ok maybe we get into this alittle too much. :lmao:

I still think DS's best costume ever was as a giant Lego. Every boy loves Legos, right?

Here's the basic idea:

http://familyfun.go.com/crafts/lego-man-662379/

We didn't do the hat. My son chose blue and we put him in jeans and a royal-blue hooded sweatshirt. All it took was the right size box, eight margarine tubs (from grandma), and a can of spray paint.

This year mine are going to be a vending machine, a lemonade stand and a pirate in the treasure chest.

Ones we have done in the past:
A tornado
Pinata
Box of munchkins
dancer in a jewerly box (My daughter is the blue one)

a kissing booth
breakfast
headless lady
frozen head in the fridge
barbie in a box
mr & mrs potato head
bag of leaves
bag of jelly beans

These are all homemade

We did this about 10 years ago. Since we couldn't come up with all those margarine tubs, we used 16oz Solo plastic cups. Instead of being one big lego, we drew lines on it and he was 4 smaller legos, LOL!

A soldier? My son was a soldier 2 years ago. We took him to the army navy store & bought him the pants, shirt, hat & belt. It wa not cheap, but it is real clothes & he has gotten a lot of use out of it separately. In fact, he wore the pants to school today. The shirt no longer fits.

How did you do the tornado? Any pictures? You have had some very creative costumes!

Any suggestions on how to make a mummy costume for an 8 yr old?

Last year my friend made one- She sewed it together- simply. Buying long sleeved white tee shirt, white leggings- she tore fabric gauzey strips(she had tea dipped them) just sewed them all over the place- some tightly others hanging off.
It was adorable.
Good Luck.

I am hoping to BUY costumes this year. My youngest 5 year old blondie wants to be Michael Jackson. My oldest is still talking about a Yip yip from Sesame street. DD wants to be a sailor. And my 7 year old has no idea yet.

Thanks everyone for the awesome ideas!!!! My son told me today that he wants to be a Mummy. I asked him about the lego brick, I thought for sure he would be gung ho but nope. I will ask him when he gets home if he likes the ghost idea. I think that would be adorable. Otherwise Mummy it is. I figure i will just use long sleeve white t and white leggings and wrap gauze around it. Not sure what I will do for his head yet though. Maybe just paint face white and wrap more gauze. My DS8 wants to be a Hobo. Guess i will just rip up some jeans, make them look dirty, dirty ripped shirt, hat, and dirty face. We will also make a bag tied to the end of a stick. Any other suggestions for a hobo??? Maybe carry some empty soda cans in his bag...:thumbsup2
Thanks

My 7ds is going as Jack Skellington this year. We had a old playground ball that we spray painted white and cut out the eyes, nose and mouth then glued black see thru net. I used a mens black dress shirt from goodwill and cut it to look like a tuxedo jacket. Underneath is a white turtleneck. His pants are from outfit we already own. I will use white chalk to make the white lines. I will make his bat tie from cardboard box and tape with with black tape.

Last year he was an Oompa Loompa. This was by far the best costume I've done but he refused to wear this year. I think he did not like all the attention he received.

I've made my 5 year old's costumes for the last 3 years. Three years ago it was Anakin Skywalker - I used brown fabric and black vinyl plus brown pants and shirt. Last year was a pirate - white shirt that was cut up and dipped in tea, cut up sweat pants, stripped socks and sash. This year is Obi Wan Kenobi - just bought the brown linen-look fabric and muslin. I'm still looking for the boots or I'll have to get brown vinyl for the boot covers like I did Anakin. Obi Wan has been the most expensive so far at $22 for fabric but making them vs buying them is so worth it.

LOL....I've got to see the Oompa Loompa!!!!

I was trying to talk my DS into being a LEgo block for Halloween, but we're goign with doctor instead. Both are pretty easy. I found the idea for the Lego costume on Family fun. Basically a box with margarine tubs glued on and spraypainted. Totally cool for the lego fan!

Here is my son as a red lego:

It cost me $1.12 (for the spray paint) and he wore it two years:)

This year, he is going to be Lego Batman. We bought a cape on etsy, and making the lego part out of a box:)

Ooh, I'd love to see your finished batman!
Our electricity went out immediately after I posted to this thread yesterday. DS10 and I ran to walmart for posterboard and got to work. The lego head cost 98 cents total! Check it out:
