Homecoming Mum

Wow! A Homecoming mum for us was a real white mum corsage with a gold football in the middle--worn by football player's mothers, cheerleaders, the dance team and the Homecoming court. They cost like $3 from the local florist. Ha!

This thread is very interesting.

I guess so! I would hate to see what would happen to a girl around here if she showed up to homecoming wearing one of those!

Exactly. In my high school, we were worried about getting shot. I couldn't imagine putting something on me that would make a good target.

But, if everyone is doing it, it must be the "in" thing to do.

Do parents buy them very expensive dresses for homecoming like we do here, or is the mum the bigger draw?

I don't know the answer to that but I do know that the mums are not worn to the dance, they are worn to school and to the homecoming game but not the dance. At least that is how it is at DD's school

Texan here, born and raised. I am 62, nearly 63 years old, and homecoming mums were a tradition even when I was in elementary school. When I was in high school, we couldn't wear them to school but only wore them to the football game, not the dance. We saved our mums after the game, and hung them on our bulletin board (cork board) that we all had in our bedrooms. I saved all 4 of mine in the years I was in high school. Our mums were one large mums with very long streamers and charms like cowbells, footballs, year, high school initials like LHS, etc tied to the streamers. In glitter, We had our name and our date's (boyfriend's) name on one of the streamers, plus the year.

When my daughter was in high school in the 90's, they could also wear them to school. She was a varsity cheerleader and the cheerleaders also made mums to hang on each of the football players lockers. (I thought that was excessive.) Many of the girls wore more than one mum--one from their date, one from parents, and sometimes one from their best friend. When I was in high school, we only wore one mum, from our date, and only to the football game. The boys did not wear mums.

I have no idea when the tradition of mums started but I started elem. school in 1956 and the tradition was already going strong then. :cheer2:

.

We wore mums to homecoming in college. They were calle "football mums" and were decorated with gold chenille stems in the shape of our school letters and had red &white ribbons with tiny football's dangling form the ends. The SGA sold them as a fund raiser and they were all the style. You'd see at least a couple hundred mum corsages in the bleachers.

Hopefully, the girls are saving these in a memory box. Their kids would live to see them one day.

Last spring we were house hunting, we went into one home with a teenage girl who was a Sr. in high school. Hanging on the wall in her room were all 4 mums, they got bigger and longer as the years progressed. Her Sr. Mum was white and really long. The rest of her mums were school colors

Wait!! Do these pass dress code?!:rotfl: I'd say they are a bit distracting in the classroom! haha

Ever since I read this thread & looked up what these are, I want one!!! My daughters thought they were silly & cute. They'd wear them.

We just had a few homecoming games here so the mum pics were all over my Facebook. I think they're way over the top but fun.
And yes, guys are to buy them for their girlfriends. I have a friend who told her son 'Don't get a girlfriend until after football season because I don't want to have to buy a mum'.

It makes the girls look like their bodies have won prizes in a 4H Fair. Best in Show. Do not want.

Wow this thread brought back memories of mums and high school. I remember helping my friends making their boyfriends garter mums. I always had a florist make my boyfriends. I threw mine out when my high school boyfriend and I broke up after several years after high school. Apart of me wishes I would have kept them for my kids to see them.

Thankfully I have 5 girls so we will just have to do the garter mums and not the huge mums. I can't imagine how big and expensive they will be when they are in high school. My oldest is in 4th grade.

Aww the memories. While I hate regular football I do love high school football and I miss the cheering and the halftime shows with the band and drill team. Although when my oldest gets to high school I will get to enjoy the games again as she is a competitive dancer already and is already taking classes to prepare to be on the drill team.

I have honestly never heard of a "Homecoming Mum" (before reading this thread, that is). As far as I know around here, boys and girls still exchange simple corsages and boutiniers for the Homecoming Dance. You learn something new everyday!

:eek:Ick I can't imagine the laughing that would take place if one of them was worn here. :lmao:

I love this thread! I have never heard of a homecoming mum, but I think it seems like great fun!

I have a mum conundrum for you fellow Texans... My DS hadn't even thought about this until I told him about this thread, lol. He is a Senior this year, but his gf already graduated this past Spring. But she is going to college locally and will definitely be at the homecoming game.

So should the mum DS gets for her be all white?? Or the school colors?? They have been together for a good while, but now I can't remember what color her mum from him was last year... :confused3

What with all the cowbells, we Texas teachers certainly knew that Mums must come off during class. Some meanies even made students leave their mums at the front of the room during class.

I'm from N. Calif/N. NV and had never ever heard or seen of such a thing, then we moved to Central TX a year ago and became enlightened ;)

Per my DD who somehow has become a mum aficionado :lmao: "only Seniors get white/silver, everyone else should have school colors"
