The search function is down, so I don't know if this topic has been brought up -

I am not looking for a debate - This is not a question of home schooling vs. public or private school. This is about how do you know if home schooling is right for you.

I am really seriously thinking of home schooling my daughter. She is 4 1/2. Problem being I don't know the first thing about how to go about it.

Just looking for some advice and how it really is once you start doing it. What is it like after a couple of years. Do you regret it, enjoy it? You get the idea -

Any web-sites that you can refer me to would be great!

Thanks!

Karen

I can tell you that it is not an easy decision. This is our first year Homeschooling. We have two children DD-10 and DS-8. Our main purpose for homeschooling was because our DS has some learning problems (Sensory Integration and Auditory Processing). Our local PS could not teach him in the way that he needed to learn. They could only teach to the whole class. I completly understood that, so my husband and I prayed long and hard and felt it was what we needed to do. I did not fault the system because they can't teach each child individually.

We started with just my son and sent DD went on to PS at the beginning of the year. I was afraid that I couldn't handle starting with them both. DD is on the other end and was in the advanced program. There was a couple of weeks of adjustments in several areas. DS had been in PS and was used to being on a time limit, having to sit in one place, etc. I was not used to having him with me all the time and I stayed tired for a couple of weeks.

After about 7 weeks, I was already seeing the advantages in having my DS at home. He was starting to make improvements with the one-on-one attention, etc. We let our DD decide if she wanted to come on home or wait until the end of the school year and she decided to come home.

Once she did, we went through another adjustment period. I have to truly say that our family is so much closer now. We are involved in a couple of different homeschool groups in our area. I didn't know where to begin looking, so I just started searching the web.

I am not saying that everyday is peachy, but it is worth it to see them learning what they need along with learning basic life skills that they are not taught in school. I love being with them and watching them learn. If we need to spend more time on something we do and if we can speed through it we do that. We don't have homework. We are not on anyone's schedule. We start our day when we want to. I try to have them finished with breakfast, dressed and chores done by 9-9:30 and then we get started with school.

We are usually finished with DS's work in about 3 hours. DD's takes longer as she is older, probably more around 4 to 4 1/2. Which is still better than being in PS and coming home with homework.

We live in NC and I know that the Homeschooling laws are different for each state. We have to file an intent with our state once the child turns 7. We have to keep track of our days (required to teach 180), and we have to give them a test at the end of the year to keep on hand at home. I can not help with the laws in your state.

I am sorry this was so long, if you want to PM me, please feel free. I will look through my websites that I have saved and send you some that I think would be helpful. Good luck in your searching and deciding.

I don't know a thing about home schooling, except to say there are some girls who go to my DD's dance studio that are home schooled and I think it's safe to say they are turning out EXCELLENT. They have a large family and all their kids are home schooled. I have no idea how that mother does it, but she does. The kids are all very smart, well behaved and seem very well adjusted. It actually blows my mind how good they're all turning out. I know I couldn't do it. I hope you find the info you need - good luck.:D

I have been doing some research myself in trying to decide if homeschooling is best for our family. I am also in Southern California so I may have some sites bookmarked that would help you with state specific stuff. Email or PM me if you are interested and I will send the links to you tonight or tomorrow - when I get on the computer with the bookmarks.

hi. i just started to homeschool my DS (6 yrs old, 1st grade) this year. i decided to do it for several reasons but the most were that he is too hyper to sit at a desk all day. we tried public school for kindergarden and it just didnt go well. there are alot of sources out there. pm me if you want. two places you should look at are the about.com message boards. just do a search and it will show up. also go to www.hslda.org for a listing of your states laws.
just so you know this is a very touchy subject. just remember to do what is right for YOUR family.

I know nothing about homeschooling but my wife's sister's kids were homeschooled and we could all hope that all kids could turn out this good. What a wonderful group of children. And: years of playing soccer has made up for any lack of social interaction lost at the public schools (of which I work at). LOL

until my dd was 13 and my ds was 10.

The first few years were so much fun. We went on so many field trips and did many projects. Made wonderful memories! It was also very hard work. It can and does get overwhelming, at times.

By the time dd was jr high age, she was so terribly lonely and wanted so badly to be a part of the social scene that we decided to let her go. Then, of course, ds was the only child at home and got very bored. So we put him in, as well. They are both doing great now and I have no regrets, either about homeschooling or placing them in ps.

So what am I saying? I guess I am saying there are so many pros and cons to hs'ing. Please spend lots of time researching and thinking long and hard before you make this decision. Also, make sure that you will have plenty of support. And that your child will be involved in many outside activities. Isolation was the hardest part for both my children and myself.

Here is a website I frequented during my hs'ing years. Just search around for the hs boards. You will get a wealth of info here.

Good luck to your family in whatever you decide.:D http://www.vegsource.com
