Hi Guys,

Are any of you home schooled? Did any of your parents try it out for a while? Are any of your friends home schooled?
I'm considering it for my kids.. and want to hear what you guys may have to say about personal experiences.

Like it?
Hate it?
Why? :)

Thanks!

I was never home schooled but i know one girl and guy who were...They turned out to be quite introverted.

Then i know another kid who was homeschooled for awhile and he's very social.

Quite honestly it depends on there age...

Elementary most deffiently they should go to school with other kids. They need to build up social skills.

And High School they are going to want to be around other kids all day. If i was homeschooled right now i would about scream.

School is a nessicary mean of socializing and it teaches them how to act around other people.

Home Schooling has the beniffits of not getting hurt or into fights and not hearing foul language but as soon as they are out of high school and into collage as adults there just going to be hit in the face with it.

I think it would be best to let them go to a school with other kids for the experience

Yeah, I'm homeschooled. All my life. It works for some people, for others it doesn't. From my personal experience it does nothing for one's social life, but there are others on the DIS who've had different experiences and are very socially active.

I wouldn't do it.

I'm not homeschooled, but don't attend school and am tutored at home due to cancer. My oncologist doesn't want me around so many people while going through chemo.
My social life has gone down the toilet, and at home it is SOOO EASSYYY to get distracted from my schoolwork.
And it gets lonely alot being just me,my mom,and my schoolwork.

I was homeschool. I loved it but I suggest if you home school your kids. Make sure they have active things to do and around other kids. And make sure they have chores to "grow up."

::yes::

Yes, yes, yes. Definitely do this.

I believe homeschooling is good, but make sure your kids are still enrolled in dance, sports, piano lessons, etc. So they still have some social activity.

I've been homeschooled for a year and am soon to receive my diploma. It took me one year to do 4 years of highschool. I also did it from an internet program (by myself), so I had to have a lot of self motivation to get it done.

But I believe homeschooling can really benefit a child. They don't get caught up in the gossip and immaturity of public school, and it builds family bonding.

And btw, I have plenty of friends. :goodvibes

Homeschooled kids can get plenty of social activity. School isn't the only place where other kids are.

I know plenty of high school kids who are going out of there head with all the immaturity around.

Homeschooled kids usually aren't stupid or stunted in growth. They know perfectly well what's in the real world.

And besides, unlike so many other people think, it's perfectly fine to be introverted.

Homeschool can be great for some kids, but not for others. My one friend was homeschooled for a couple years and she said that basically it was like skipping two years of school. I know I wouldn't like to be homeschooled...

But my friend from orchestra, who was having some rough times a few years ago and was getting involved with some bad stuff switched over to homeschooling and now he's doing awesome.

Basically, I'd try "real" school first.

Thanks for all the opinions and info!
Still thinking about it all...

Like everyone else said, homeschooling is totally great if you've got dance class or whatever to go to, and you've got tons of friends.

Personally, I could never do it, because nothing would ever get done. I'm a hardcore procrastinator, and the fact that I would be doing the work around the PC would mean I wouldn't actually be working. I also, am not an outgoing person. I have a small group of friends that I hang out with at school, sometimes outside of it (but that's rare). I only really have one friend that I hang out with regularly. I'd feel cut off from everything if I left school now. It'd be different if I was asked to switch schools, or if I was moving.

I am in seventh grade and I need the friends. I could never be home-schooled.

Yes high school kids for the most part are immature...Believe me i know...Exspecially the freshman and guys at my school.

And The kids i know who are homeschooled don't know anything about the world other then what there mom says is. The oldest one just graduated and went just about crazy not knowing what to do.

I also said i knew a kid who was homeschooled and was fine.

And I'm introverted too for the most part but i relized that when it comes to interviewing for a job it just doesn't work. And School is the biggest place to get socialization. But i know you can get it at church or dancing or other sports.

I was just stating my opinon

Agreed.
I was sick for about two months in seventh grade, and had a tutor come once a week for two hours.
While it was amazing how much work I completed in such a short time (a whole week's worth in two hours) I don't think I'd do it by choice.

Again, I'll say. Most homeschooled kids are not stunted in social growth.

I am homeschooled too. I have been for 3 years! I like it alot! If you think that it it best for your children then go for it! As long as your kid has some friends that they will see sometime, then I think it is perfectly fine.

Are any of you home schooled?
I was the past two years...
Did any of your parents try it out for a while?
Yes, but I did more of an online schooling thing...
Like it?
Kind of...it had its pros and cons
Hate it?
I did a lot. I think the main reason though was because I wasn't around my friends and I was lonely a lot...
Why?
Explained above^...and plus, I really was on my own so I had no teacher to help me. But the reason I did it was because the schools in my area were bad. But now I moved to a different state and the schools are better.

If you have any more questions you can PM me. :)

Oh my Brittney!
You hit the nail on the head.

This is my main problem with schooling at home,be it homeschooling, tutoring, whatever.
I have such a hard time because there's no one around to help when I need it.
And emailing the teachers is like pulling teeth and it takes forever for them to get back to me.

I agree, you have to have self-motivation and a different learning ability to stop public school and switch over to home schooling. Personally, I learn by reading the material, and the teacher explaining it over and over again just annoys me. :)

Hm. I say teacups, you should start your kids our for public/private school during the elementary years. That's when they're building social skills. THEN, when they get older and you still want to homeschool them I think it'd be fine. :)
