Home Depot return freight charge issue...am I out of luck on this one?

I feel like such an idiot. A month ago I purchased 600 lbs. of hardwood flooring from HomeDepot.com. I never got an order confirmation for it so I assumed the order did not go through- there was a storm that night and the computer did a weird blank screen thing right as I was entering cc info and ordering...so a little while later I tried again and ordered the same thing and this time everything went thru normally and I got an immediate order confirmation.

THEN- the next business day I got 2 shipping confirmation emails for BOTH orders- seems the first order went through even tho I never got confirmation. Following so far?

So I immediately call the 1800 number and a very nice man- John- said this thing happens all the time and he would cancel the duplicate order. But then the freight company called a few days later (think tractor trailer huge trucking company) and said they had 2- 600 lb. pallets of flooring to bring down and I called 1800HomeDepot again.

This time they apologized for not getting duplicate order cancelled and told me just to refuse delivery of extra flooring and I would get my refund when they received it back at the warehouse, no problem...well, I guess they got it today because I got an email saying they are refunding the flooring less a $290 freight fee for returning it.

I specifically told them we did not have the vehicle capability to return 600 lbs. ourselves and they never even hinted that their would be any type of return shipping fee (initial shipping was free on any order over $50) or re-stocking fee. I am livid about having to 'pay' $300 for flooring I could not use and was never informed I would be paying for...I have sent a complaint email- anything else I can do or am I just out of luck?

I DID look to see if there was any re-stocking or return fee on larger parcel returns and could find nothing on website...

I think you should just give them another call. That charge is most likely an automatic charge that is computer generated. It should just take a quick call to straiten it out! :)

This....I bet it is a mistake that can be taken care of...

Just call back and explain again that the duplicate order never should have gone through because you did not complete the order and did not receive order confirmation the 1st time you ordered. Say that you were told to refuse shipment for a full refund including the freight charge. Ask to speak with a supervisor if they won't kindly refund the freight charge. If they still refuse, let them know you will be disputing the charge with your credit card company.

Okay- these are good suggestions- I will try that. I should say that I did eventually receive an order confirmation email for that first weird order that the computer screen went blank on. But I got it a full days after I got the email confirmation for the second time I tried ordering it. So I really had no idea the first went through...but by the time stamps it looks as though I ordered 24 cases of flooring then waited a couple hours and ordered 24 cases again. Which I guess is essentially what happened but customer service agreed that obviously that is not what I intended to do, of course and that it was just a computer glitch, no problem.
