Professor Black: She had never followed Tommy Smith, so this was news to her. "So you're going to listen to your father, then," she started, "the father that pulled you into the limelight because of his stupid fights. You didn't abandon him-he abandoned you, and don't even try to object, because you know it's true. You two weren't getting any support from your parents-Christine told me," she explained quickly. "I know you tried to hide it, at least at one point, but I could tell. And, Ev, you need to heal yourself before you can help anyone else. You'd done more than I could have asked for already, and I knew you needed your space. If I hadn't known you were so hurt I would have found you myself." She was determined to talk some sense into him, and didn't want him to go thinking he was awful because he'd left. Sure, it'd been a hard year, but she'd survived. He wasn't responsible for any of it. If anyone was, it was her, because she'd known her relatives. It was her fault for putting both of them in danger. It was her responsibility to keep them safe because of that, and she hadn't. It hurt seeing all the regret for something he hadn't been able to control for so long.
