Has anyone had experience of hiring a laptop for use in an on-site Disney resort? I will be staying at the Pop Century and wondered if I can hire a laptop via Pop Century and do any of you know whether it will already be configured for the internet?

Many thanks.

I'm afraid I can't help with your question, but I would also be VERY interested to know if you can do such a thing.

My main reason for posting is to suggest you might get more response if you post this question on the Resort board.

Thanks Becky. I think I have posted it somewhere else too, I'll have a look in the morning. Gotta go to bed now! See you tomorrow. Nighty night.

I don't know if it's possible, but remember to find a local dial up number, or you'll pay a fortune in phone costs.
There were internet kiosks at some of the resorts when I was there in May.
If you only want to send/check mail you can always do that at DisneyQuest

Have a great time on your solo trip, i'm just (about a month...or two) back from mine so if you have any questions feel free to pm me

I saw places around Highway 192 saying that they hired laptops, but i don't know how much etc. Sorry.

Hope you have a good trip.

I take my own laptop and connect via a wireless card to the ADSL wireless systems available at WDW and the hotel boulevard hotels, Broadband connection and cheaper than hotel dial up.

I am not keen to take my laptop as I want to travel as light as possible. If absolutely necessary, I can live without an internet connection for a week. But it would have been nice to keep in contact with people here and another Disney website I normally visit every day. I tried using the internet connection at DisneyQuest last time I was there and every time I tried posting a message on a board, the machine would refresh itself every 30 seconds or so and I would lose all the typing I had just done! I don't know if it didn't like cookies or something? The kiosks seemed just as bad, I tried the one in the Caribbean Beach Resort and had horrendous trouble with using one of my favourite websites.

I take it that you do not use it also for making CD/DVD's of digital pictures?

This is the other reason I take my laptop, to ensure that I have a backup of the pictures taken on the trip.
I have never had a problem with the wireless connection to Broadband at any place I have logged in from.

Hi O.W.K.

I did think about this on our last trip. But in the end, we couldn't take the laptop because the handluggage weight limit with our airline was pathetically low. We got pictures developed AND put on CD in Florida at regular intervals during our holiday. This is what I will probably do again as I am hiring a car and it will be easy to get this done.

Hi 2Bm&D,
Who were you flying with?
Virgin and BA class the laptop as additional hand luggage to your allowances.
The only downside is that at MCO you have to take the lappy out of the case on the secondary security check.

We flew with First Choice who seemed particular fussy about weight limits. I don't know whether they would have allowed a laptop as an extra item. We carefully weighed all our handluggage and it took us hours to get it right! The laptop in it's case without any leads/games/disk etc was exactly on the weight limit and we decided not to take it. We had so much other heavy stuff to take, we decided it wasn't worth it.

This time I am flying with Virgin and am assuming they will be more generous with weight limits or what you can take??

All passengers travelling to and from the UK are not permitted to check in any bag that weighs in excess of 32kgs (70lbs). The maximum weight limit of 32kgs relates to single items of luggage and should not be seen as your baggage allowance. This new safety measure, which applies to all airlines and all destinations to/from the UK, is being introduced to reduce strains and injuries amongst baggage handling staff.

Passengers who exceed this maximum weight limit will be asked to repack their luggage into smaller units before they can check in. Excess baggage charges will be applied where applicable.

On Transatlantic, Caribbean and Nigerian routes we operate a piece system of allowance for checked in baggage.

Two pieces of luggage per passenger, each weighing up to 32kg (70lbs). When added together, the three dimensions of any piece of luggage must not exceed 158cm (62in).

Infants not entitled to a seat are entitled to one piece of checked baggage weighing no more than 10 kg and with dimensions of 9 x 14 x 22 ins. This is over and above the buggy or bassinet or car seat, which are carried free of charge

You are allowed to carry one piece of hand luggage onto the plane. This must be able to fit under the seat in front of you, which means it must not be larger than 23cm x 36cm x 56cm (9in x 14in x 22 in) and should not weigh more than 6kg (13lbs).

Wheelchairs, crutches, baby buggies and items necessary for baby care during the flight will be carried free over and above the baggage allowance. Baby buggies, carrying baskets and wheelchairs will normally be carried in the hold.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority requires all UK airlines to review and enforce their regulations regarding the acceptance and carriage of cabin (hand) baggage. We ask you to help us meet the regulations to make your flight more enjoyable. Space on any aircraft is at a premium and hand baggage should contain only items you require during the flight. There may be occasions when even having met size and weight limitations there is not enough room. In this event baggage will be checked and loaded in the hold. We ask for your understanding on those rare occasions.

that's from the Virgin website, but they always allow laptops as well.
Q Can I take my laptop and use it on board the plane?
A If you are situated in the Upper Class cabin you can use your laptop onboard most Virgin Atlantic aircraft. However, we are currently working on technology to allow both Premium Economy and Economy passengers the ability to use their laptops whilst in flight.

Thanks for that Obi. I am growing more and more inclined not to bother with my laptop. In fact, it's being rather awkward at the moment because the keyboard isn't working properly and I am using an external keyboard plugged into a USB port. It would be too much hassle I think. I am either going to have to do without, find an internet cafe, use an internet kiosk (which don't work very well on certain websites) or hire one.
