Hilton Head questions for the experts

Hi.

Considering going to Hilton Head in April. How is the weather at that time? Is swimming realistic? Also, we're going to reserve a one bedroom. What are the choices for views/location? What do you recommend? This will be our first trip to HH at DVC. Any activities we should be sure not to miss? Our children are 6 and 3 1/2.

We were at HH for 3 days the week before Easter. The weather cooperated beautifully. Of course, the week before the weather was horrible-I had a friend who was down there, and she checked out early because it was so bad. It was warm enough for swimming 2 days, especially at the beach house where the pool is heated. They had a good number of activities: bird-house painting, shirt painting, a kids night out, marsh walks, campfires, etc. We were in Building 16, which had a view of other buildings, but was very pretty. Most of the one bedrooms are located in the lodge, which has a marsh view, I think. It is a great resort. I would try to rent/bring bikes. We weren't able to (resort was sold out of our size), and everytime someone passed us on a bike, DD sighed.

The weather in March is very iffy. We were there the week before the person who checked out early mentioned in the previous post. Our trip was awesome, 4 of the 5 days were perfect days for swimming. Matthew (age 7) loved it so much that he has asked if we can spend next spring break there too instead of a Cruise and Disneyworld . We are planning on going back again, we may see you if you decide to go at Easter.

As for activities, Matt has mentioned his favorites were the "Pirates of the Calabous", "Detective", the fish painting, campfire and bike riding to the pool house. The adults in our party really enjoyed the Lowland Music and Storytelling hosted by B'lou. (Actually anything hosted by B'lou was awesome)

Well, we were there "THAT" week! LOL.

Even though the weather didn't cooperate (AT ALL!), we had a great time. We did rent bikes, DD17 went kayaking, and I took advantage of the weather to do things that I don't normally do if I spend all my time at the beach or pool.

I'd have loved it if we had had 80º days and nothing but sunshine, but Hilton Head has so much to offer that you can have a good time no matter what!

Just be sure you pack expecting ANYTHING. I think sweatshirt sales on Hilton Head Island were at record highs that week.

Just returned from HHI (April 16-21) and the weather was great! Temperatures ranged from 74 - 80 during our stay. The pool was packed each day and the water was very comfortable.

Last April we were in building 23 which had a balcony view to the pool. Very nice if you like all of the activity. This year we were in building 31 which is very quiet and secluded with a marsh view. Also very nice but different.

We were told that the resort was at 100% capacity during our stay.

We were there in the beginning of April & had two excellent swimming days (both days in the 80's). Our third day was blustery, so we just relaxed on that day.

My recommendation for a fun activity is the dolphin discovery. It's not too long, so kids don't get bored. The boat that Disney uses only seats about 8 people, so everyone will have a great view (I noticed several yacht-sized dolphin excursions....those boats are way too big to get a good, close-up view of the dolphins!).

During our stay, the resort hosted a campfire. We don't have kids, so we just observed.....the kids looked like they were having a ball! The CM's helped the kids construct smores with their toasted marshmellows (yummy!). Everyone seemed to have a great time.

The Big Dipper pool is really, really nice. Do yourself a favor and spend lots of time here....your kids will love it and you'll have an opportunity to catch some rays & read a good book. There's a little walk-up sandwich/drink spot there, so bring some $$ to the pool with you. Also near the pool is a ping pong table & crafts.

I can help with your question about 1 Bedrooms. There are 21 1 BR (also 21 studios), all lockoffs. 16 of them are in the main lodge (Bldgs 11 and 12), the other 5 are on the first floor of 5 different buildings. I know 3 of them are 16, 18, and 28, don't remember the other 2. In March we stayed in 1137-3rd floor of building 11. It overlooks the interior, tree-tops, but if you look to the right, you can see the marsh. The view was nice, but what we particularly loved about this location was the private balcony. There was another 1 BR across the hall from us that over looked the inlet, from which you could see dolphins. There are pictures of the view from there on Tommy's HH website. To me that would be the ideal view. Next year when we go back, I really hope we get either of those two locations-they're both third floor, building 11, non-smoking. We were also in a studio in Building 28 for one night-just a view of the interior, trees, and the balcony is pretty open, like at VWL.

We have only been to HH in the off season. Twice in January and once in November. We have used the pools and especially the hot tub each and every trip. It really depends on how brave you are. Our kids seem to enjoy swimming even if it is real cold out and even at night.

Since the pools are heated, the only thing that would keep us out of the water would be too much rain. That would cause the pool temp to drop below the 82 degrees. If you want to feel warm at the pool, stand on the deck with no towel for a minute or two. That pool water will feel real warm.

Heres how I do it:
Hot tub 15 min.....Shiver on pooldeck 3 min (windy day 1.5 min)......Jump in the now balmy pool 15min.....repeat.

I am going for three days this June. If that's not too late, I will make sure to EMail you with details of kid activities. Friends are staying with us and we will have 4 children altogether; 9,8,5 and 4. My daughter is extremely excited about the dolphin cruise. I am excited about being by the ocean after 17 years in Indiana...

Just a note about the bikes.
We were at HH for a week in July 2002 and the Disney resort was out of rental bikes. They gave us the name & number of a company to call. They delivered our bikes right to our villa and I believe the charge was exactly the same as Disney. We let them know what day and time we wanted the bikes picked up and they came and got them.

You may want to ask about this if they are sold out and don't offer you this option. My dh handled the bike rentals so I don't know if they offered him the info or if he asked.
