Hilton Head lovers....

Having never been there I think we will lazily explore and try out some restaurants, beach walks, naps. My friend will check out whatever children's program they may have and maybe have her DD try an activity. :)

Just an fyi - the kids activities are GREAT!! I have a 6 yr old, and she had a blast with arts and crafts.. and storytelling , games.. etc.. they did a great job!! :thumbsup2

Just love reading all the reports on this thread! We are so excited to get there!!!:goodvibes

Just starting to read through some of these posts on this thread....we are very excited to be going to HH for the first time this year! We will be going from the end of August through the beginning of September...for a long labor Day weekend.

I have a question....has anyone ever had groceries delivered to their room? If so, which service did you use?

Also, anyone been over labor Day...is it extremely busy???

Will you not have a car?? IMO - HHI is the type of place where a car would be a definate plus.. there is so much to see and do off property... and if you DO have access to a car, then there is PLENTY of grocery/food stores in that immediate area.. :thumbsup2 So, no worries.

yes, we will definitely have a car....just thinking that I might get a little "lazy" once we arrive and not feel like food shopping!!!! LOL!!!! I was trying to take the easy way out and see if anyone has used a delivery grocer before in the area!

come to think of it, i might get too lazy to cook anything, also......LOL! :rotfl: I was mainly just thinking of buying breakfast foods and late night snacks. We will probably go out to eat for dinner, and just eat at the resort snack place for lunch.

Well, like i said, if you have a car, you will probably want to venture off property to sight see on the island anyhow, so chances are you will pass a food store or two! ;) There is so much to see, you will have a blast!

There is a Piggly Wiggly grocery store just around the corner that we usually get our basics from, and even bike to during the week to pick up extra things we need since we can use the basket on the bike and a backpack. There is also a nice Fresh Market on the way into the island on the left. Great fruits and veges and wonderful deli and meats and seafood. Also, plan to go to Hudsons to eat one night for a fun night. Not fancy at all, but good food and great atmosphere. Just take a left at the sign after you come over the Hilton Head bridge. Look for the sign on your way in. We always pick up shrimp a couple of times a week and boil it. There is a great little stand on the right, I think it's called Bill's and he also has great homemade pies. Have a wonderful time!!!

What kind of bikes does Disney rent? Any choices or is it like Ft. Wilderness where there is basically a kid's bike and an adult's bike?

They are kids and adults with pedal brakes since there aren't any hills in Hilton Head, no gears. It's really all you need. You rent them right at the pool area. Other venders on the island rent also, but we have always rented from Disney.

We are checking in on Easter Sunday and need ideas of restaurants that will be open for an Easter Dinner. We received the flyer from the resort to pre-order the easter dinner fixings, but the delivery time is listed as 10-noon. Obviously we don't check in until 4 and after driving down from our hotel in Charlotte, I don't know that I'll really feel like cooking anyway.

Anyone been in a similar situation and have some great ideas for me?

Thanks.

I am subing so I can read later. DH and I are trying to go to HH for our Anniversary in Mid October. This will be our first trip to HH. We are Cape Hatteras NC people so this is going to be a nice change. Gotta go clean the bathroom...fun!

We are leaving in two weeks for HHI and I've been doing some searching and found this GREAT thread.

I love to read this thread every summer to get excited for our August trip!:)

We just returned from a week at HHI - we had 2 - 2BR villas as we took the 2 families and 7!!! kids.

We had a fantastic time. Most of our group loves to fish, and they caught shark, croakers, rays, and more both on the beach and at the marina/fishing pier. We enjoyed the beach and pools. The low-country shrimp boil at the Beach House on Thursday was delicious.

We had a lot of fun at the Campfire, magic show, tie dye shirts, and on the Nature kyack trip.

My family enjoys HHI more than WDW (and they love WDW).

One of us drove to the Beach House everyday with all the junk, and the rest went by bike. One tip is to rent the umbrella and beach chairs - we have done this and it is very convienent and comfortable.

We went on a Nature Hike at Sea Pines - it was the only thing we did off-site.

There is so much to choose from!
Enjoy! Sandie

I could cut and paste this as my own I am sure after our trip... WE LOVE our HHI vacations more than WDW too!

Nice to see so many get so much from this thread!!

Our count-down as officially begun for our 11th annual summer trip to our HHI home resort. We're checking in Sunday July 8th and staying thru Saturday July 14th -- 2 bedroom villa, wife and I and 4 kids (17, 15, 10, 8). We're doing a combined college visit/HHI tour and the HHI tour will provide the much needed rest. We're visiting 3 colleges (all in North and South Carolina) on the way down and 3 on the way home back to Pittsburgh.

Things we always do:

  • Just hang out and relax
  • Not worry about what we're going to do the next day, just get up and decide (big difference from our WDW trips)
  • Park the car and use the bikes as much as possible during the week
  • Have one big dinner out (Scott's or similar -- Salty Dog dinner now officially off the list -- quality and service keeps going down -- will take other suggestions)
  • Take a dolphin cruise
  • Get over to the beach in the evenings
  • Tuesday night at the pool (usually don't do the buffet though)
  • Never set the alarm
  • Campfire and smores....I say a boom chicka boom....
  • Catch B'Lou if he is doing story telling
  • Play tons of ping pong and shuffle board

To name a few. If anyone has a recent activities schedule and could send it along that would be great. Also -- need a good breakfast place. It became a tradition for us to get up one morning and take the bike path behind the mall over to Cracker Barrel for breakfast. What disappointment when we biked over last year and found it out of business (not sure why we didn't notice on the drive in). The bike path is on the other side of 278 and not sure there are other options on that side -- HH Diner is on the right side but no bike path and I've heard of another place called Stack's but have never eaten there.

Also -- if anyone can share info the Sea Shack -- that's another place we think we will give a try this year.

We are just back from another trip and had a great time. Our family loves the kayaking trip and of course Big Murgie's for a game of pool. We found a gem of a restaurant-The Old Fort Pub. Go for the eary tasting menu, it's awesome. So is the view and the service. A plus!!!!!!!!!:thumbsup2

Wow! Wait til I tell DH that there are people on this board admit they like HHI vacations more than WDW. The first time we went to HHI, he turned to me and said "I'd tell you I love it here even more than WDW, but I'm sure that saying that would be a sin on your board, so I don't dare admit it!' So I know he loves HHI more than WDW, just has been afraid to admit it.
