Can I vent?

I am really starting to wonder what the heck the Dem party is thinking :confused3
I am ticked off with all the crap treatment Hillary got and how the DNC pushed Obama on the public.

Now, in our local state election. They announced Al Franken as the Democratic nominee for Senator! :faint: AL FRANKEN?!?!? He has so much baggage and issues, why in the world would anyone want Al Franken to go up against Norm Coleman? Norm Coleman has a pretty strong base here in MN, it will take a strong Dem to knock him out of his seat, but Al Franken is NOT that guy, IMO

Al Franken has put his foot in his mouth SO many times, I can just see Norm Coleman's ad come Sept/Oct :scared1:

Man, first I don't know who I am going to support as President (McCain/Independent candidate) and now I have to decided who the heck to vote for my Senator, I will not vote for Norm Coleman though. I do not like the guy at all. Maybe I will write Mickey Mouse for that one! ;)

AL FRANKEN?!?! What the heck was the MN DFL thinking?!?!?! :headache: :rolleyes1

I know. I liked Al Franken on SNL, but I've found out some things about him which make me wonder "what was he thinking, and now he wants to be Senator?"

Oh well, stranger things have happened

I suspect that the ever-crafty Obama has refused to accept HRC's VP bid because, among other reasons, it would mean exposing Bill Clinton's shall we say questionable financial records for scrutiny. Neither Hillary nor Obama need the bad headlines now.

Excuse me for saying this, but that's absurd. Hillary ran to win, and she almost did. You think she and President Clinton weren't ready to face any scrutiny that came their way?

Yeah, like Jesse Ventura getting elected our governor!!! ;) :rotfl2:

Sure Al Franken can make a good/sometimes funny comedian but he has a lot of baggage that is already hitting the airwaves/newspaper out here and this is the guy the DFL wants to run against Norm Coleman????
Are they trying to lose the election?

I am just scratching my head at why they would think Al Franken would be the "strong" candidate.

Although I guess if Minnesota can elect an ex-wrestler for their governor, Al Franken might not be too extreme :rolleyes1
Oh Jesse Ventura was on the news not that long ago and made a hint about running for Senator as an Independent
OMG I can just see myself in the voting booth, Franken, Coleman or Ventura, don't know if I should :lmao: or :scared1:

I promise you it will get very ugly between Franken and Coleman this election season. popcorn::

No kidding.

Our airwaves will be burning up with all the heated TV ads.
Between Obama and McCain and now Franken and Coleman; I will have to have a lot of popcorn:: on hand ;)

I listened to Franken on Air America for well over a year. He had a very thorough knowledge of the issues - and a lot of ammunition on the incompetency of Norm Coleman.

I hope he makes it in - I know his campaign has made some missteps - but this guy is clearly dedicated to making the country better........

Maybe so, but he does have a lot of baggage with him, even if he is very knowledgeable.

I just know it is going to get so ugly and nasty between Coleman and Franken. :duck:
Coleman was already in the paper saying Franken is unfit to be a Senator and that he and his campaign will show Minnesota the reasons why in the coming months.
Oh yeah, it is going to get real ugly!

I hear ya - I'm trying to ignore "baggage" that isn't about the issues. Its my first day - lol.

Norm Coleman has legitimate issue baggage - he had some hearings on Iraq during his tenure - that were out and out embarrassing. Some British guy showed him up.

I'm going to google it right now.......

From his Wikipedia entry:

Investigations Subcommittee and Galloway testimony

In December 2004 in connection with his position of Chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, Coleman called for United Nations Secretary-general Kofi Annan to resign because of the "UN's utter failure to detect or stop Saddam's abuses" in the UN's Oil-for-Food program and because of fraud allegations against Annan's son relating to the same program. In May 2005 Coleman's subcommittee held hearings on their investigation of abuses of the UN Oil-for-Food program, including oil smuggling, illegal kickbacks and use of surcharges, and Saddam Hussein's use of oil vouchers for the purpose of buying influence abroad. These hearings covered certain corporations and several well-known political figures, but are much remembered for the appearance of British Member of Parliament George Galloway, a member of the RESPECT The Unity Coalition (Respect), a then-new British political party, in which the MP forcefully rejected the allegations:

"We have your name on Iraqi documents, some prepared before the fall of Saddam, some after, that identify you as one of the allocation holders," Coleman accused. "I am not now nor have I ever been an oil trader" retorted Galloway, stating that the charges were false and part of a diversionary "mother of all smoke screens" by pro-Iraq war U.S. politicians to deflect attention from the "theft of billions of dollars of Iraq's wealth... on your watch" that had occurred not during the Oil-for-Food program but under the post-invasion Coalition Provisional Authority by "Halliburton and other American corporations... with the connivance of your own government." Galloway claimed that the subcommittee's dossier was full of distortions and rudimentary mistakes, citing, for example, the charge that he had met with Saddam Hussein "many times" when the number was two.[41] This unusual appearance of a British MP before a US Senate committee drew much media attention in both America and Britain.[42]

The Majority Staff of the subcommittee prepared a subsequent report pertaining to Galloway, which was released in October, 2005. It elaborates on allegations and evidence of the committee and includes disputed [43] testimony from former Iraqi foreign minister Tariq Aziz. It also alleges that another officer of Mariam Appeal, Galloway's then-wife, received $150,000 in oil kickbacks, which she denies.[44][45] Senator Coleman transmitted these reports to the U.S. Department of Justice, the Manhattan DA, the Washington DC and New York federal prosecutors, the UK Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, and the Charity Commission.[46][47] None saw fit to pursue charges. On June 2, 2006, Senator Coleman responded to criticism that he had insufficiently investigated the Australian Wheat Board for sanctions busting, saying that there were legal and cost hurdles and that as the Prime Minister of Australia at the time, John Howard, was also a Neocon' as well as a supporter of the Bush administration and a friend of President Bush, and as there was a strong possibility that the Howard Government was involved in the sanction busting, he did not want to pursue it.

This thread has been really interesting and fun. We all did a great job of not crossing the line to keep it open.

Not sure who I will back for president now.

Well, your state is in the 'battle ground' catagory on RCP. I think mine being home of the Machine is pretty safely locked up. The last two pres. elections there wasn't much activity from any candidate in Illinois other than the expensive fundraising dinners that I keep checking my mailbox for an invite.

Oh yeah, Coleman has some issues. I can not stand Norm Coleman, never have, never will.
I know 100% I will not vote for Coleman. I want to see him out of office asap :)

I think the DFL could have done better then Franken though ;)

I read this morning that there are 15 so called battleground states, including mine. Funny, I always thought my state was solid Democrat. We haven't gone red in the general since Nixon.
I also did not realize just how close Kerry came to losing this state in the last election, Kerry got 51% and Bush 47%, that does seem pretty close.

I personally think Obama has this state pretty locked up though. Obama was here last Tuesday and a friend of mine had to go downtown. She said it was the craziest thing she ever saw. There was blocks and blocks of crowds just for Obama
She said she never saw anything like it before, not even for a sports event.
She said the crowd was mostly young voters (under 30) wearing "Obama is my hero" T-shirts :confused3

Will be interesting to see how NJ plays out - its Hillary country. It could be very close Obama\McCain split - but I think I see Obama squeaking it out.

Obama's people have been trying to call me up - I haven't taken their calls. I may end up voting for him - but he's not getting any money from me!!! Hillary got my political expenditures for the year!

Some of the states where Obama had huge crowds (Ohio, Penn, Texas) he lost to Clinton. That means nothing. I don't think anyone will claim he isn't strong in Metro areas.

It seemed that Hillary was very popular here in NJ. I'm not sure on Obama's draw in NJ yet. Where I work Obama/McCain support seems to be split down racial lines.

True, Obama is strong in the Twin Cities, especially Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Out here though where I live is more Rep country. The last election I saw more Bush signs then Kerry signs.

Texas always goes Republican anyway. This is a very Conservative state and I can't see that changing so it's interesting that Obama got such big crowds. Of course, Hillary did too and I don't know about McCain.

I wouldn't say Texas always goes Republican, though that has been the trend lately.

Historically, we've had 39 Democrat governors and 6 Republican. In fact Bill Clements, in 1979, was the first Republican in 100 years. Basically, an indication of the state going from rural farming economy to more upscale big city dwellers and tech jobs.
