Hillary Supporters unite part 2; no bashing please

Hey all. It’s quiet around here without GotDisney and DISUNC to liven the place up. We’re getting closer to the convention next month. There’s still a lot of talk that the DNC is going to keep Hillary’s name off the role call in the name of party “unity” despite that per the rules she should be on there.

I’ve been hearing a lot of rumors – one being that the DNC has stated that she has until July 15 to retire her debt with Obama’s support. Per this, they’re trying to negotiate a deal with her that they’ll (I guess the DNC and Obama’s campaign both?) will help to retire it if she agrees to have her name removed from the ballot.

For being democrats, there’s not a lot of democracy in how this entire thing has played out.

Anyways… here’s a blog that was posted on July 9. A little old, but interesting none the less. The blogger is a delegate from Oregon.

FACE TO FACE WITH OBAMA -The Tale of an Oregon Delegate
by Guest Blogger Susan B. Castner

Two Thursday’s ago, June 26th, I attended a meeting in Washington, D.C. with Senators Clinton and Obama. Incorrectly labeled a “fundraiser” by the press, it was supposed to be a small gathering of Hillary’s national finance committee and while there were a few in attendance to write checks to the Obama campaign that night, many did not.

Prior to this gathering, I had had several discussions and meetings with many staunch Obama supporters. These friends have all been exceptionally gracious in reaching out and have been willing to listen to the concerns brought forth. Many have eagerly awaited welcoming HRC supporters on board. So I was genuinely looking forward to the evening in Washington with an open mind, if not an open checkbook. Having already met Senator Obama in Scottsdale several years ago, I was truly hoping to see what my friends had related to me in oh-so many ways. I was hoping to be wowed, not wooed. I wanted to hear something that would bring me totally on board with the many friends and fellow Oregon delegates who support Senator Obama.

The first question during the very brief Q&A period dealt with a persistent rumor about Hillary’s name NOT being on the first ballot in Denver. As a Clinton delegate, I am looking forward to representing the people who voted for me at the 1st CD convention and the 259,000 Oregonians who voted for Hillary in May. I also feel a level of responsibility to the 18 million voters who must be respected, heard, and no longer invisible. Hillary has expressed this sentiment so much more eloquently than I ever could. So I, along with others on Hillary’s finance committee who are elected delegates, wanted to hear that there would be an open convention in which Hillary Clinton's name is placed into nomination and delegate votes are registered by roll call -- as has been the procedure at Democratic conventions throughout modern history.

The people I have been in the trenches with for the last 18 months all feel that Hillary’s achievements as the first woman to present a serious challenge must be recorded for history – especially since convention week includes the 88th anniversary of women's suffrage. Imagine attending THE convention that celebrates the phenomenal achievements of generations of women in politics! What would be a better way to join splintered Democratic constituencies into a winning alliance? After all, if the sensible shoe were on the other foot, would anyone in his or her right mind even think of suggesting that Senator Obama's name not be placed in nomination? Gary Hart, Ted Kennedy, Jesse Jackson, Joe Biden, Jerry Brown, Paul Tsongas (among others) have ALL had their names placed in nomination with far fewer than 1,896 delegates.

My friend who asked the question in DC explained that if we, on the finance committee, were expected to put our time, energy, effort, and rolodexes into getting Senator Obama elected, we wanted some assurance that we would be able to vote for Hillary in Denver.

We all thought it was a reasonably benign question with a relatively simple answer. I was absolutely stunned when Senator Obama replied that that there were many issues that needed to be "negotiated" and we would not have a "negotiating session" that night. He did attempt to placate us by saying that Hillary would be "front and center" at the convention. He also told the woman who asked the question that he DID want her rolodex. Answers to other questions about the blatant misogyny and reducing Hillary’s campaign debt were no more satisfying.

My deep disappointment in the entire process and the outcome is not likely to dissipate yet I remain hopeful. Everyone needs to do what he or she is comfortable doing between now and November. And EVERY decision deserves respect. I have yet to decide whether I will write a check to Senator Obama’s campaign. And I am not asking you to contribute at this time - I cannot in good conscience make this request of anyone until Senator Obama commits to allowing a first ballot roll call vote. So for right now, I am focused on making sure that elected Hillary delegates and super-delegates CAN vote for her in Denver.

Another important endeavor for which I will ask assistance is reducing Hillary’s campaign debt to vendors. She is not asking anyone to help pay back the money that she personally loaned to the campaign, which she regards as her own investment. If you haven’t already maxed out to Hillary, please contribute whatever you can (all amounts large and small are welcome): http://www.hillaryclinton.com/contribute/jsc44.
The comment made by a poster below this blog in regards to how Obama treated Alice Palmer is worth a read, in my opinion.

Update: A couple of people have now called the DNC and a spokesperson for the office of the chairman has said that Hillary's name will (rightfully) be on the ballot with no preconditions.

That's good news. After the way the primary was handled, I honestly didn't have any reason to believe that the DNC would do the right thing so I’m glad to hear that they are.

Well, let me rephrase that: as of today Hillary’s name will be on the ballot. Let’s see what actually happens comes August.

On other notes: It looks as if Hillary is not being seriously considered as Obama’s running mate. Now, I’m not one for an Obama/Hillary ticket. Even if Hillary was running as his VP, I wouldn’t vote for it per the previous reasons I’ve stated. However, I feel that it’s a slap in her face that she’s not seriously being considered – after all, she won the popular vote.

Anyway - the reason indicating that she’s not being considered are coming from Howard Wolfson. He has stated that she has not been asked to undergo the formal vetting process that potential VP’s are asked to do.

Then again – when is Obama going to be vetted??? With that being the case, maybe she is being considered.

I totally agree with you. I am NOT for a Obama/Clinton ticket and I do not think she should take it if asked, but for her not to be even considered is a big slap in the face to her AND her supporters!

Wonderful. Obama's lead in the Newsweek poll fell from 15 points to 3 points in a month and 'more seriously, some Obama supporters worry that the spectacle of their candidate eagerly embracing his old rival, Hillary Clinton, and traveling the country courting big donors at lavish fund-raisers, may have done lasting damage to his image as an arbiter of a new kind of politics.'

Changing positions on a bunch of issues isn't why he's sinking. He should have never shared a stage with HC, I guess.

Has anyone considered buying one of the t-shirts Hillary's website is offering? I'm thinking of doing so just as a keepsake and to help out a little.

So now Obama's fall in the Newsweek poll is Hillary's fault? Gee, maybe we could blame her for high gas prices and other economic problems too. Heck why not, Bill got blamed for just about everything by some.

Seriously, I'm personally tired of the rhetoric and nonsense.

Don't you know, nothing is Obama's fault, it's always someone else's? :rolleyes1

Obama could not have lost his lead because maybe, just maybe people are realizing just what and who Obama is and they are not liking what they are seeing.....Nope, it could not be that....must be those darn Clintons, they always cause trouble.

My time on the CB has been a bit spotty the last couple of weeks (holiday and what all). Has anyone heard from DISUNC or GotDisney lately? I know they used to hang around this thread.

I don't want to stir up any stink, so if something happened that we're not supposed to talk about (please, no!) just pass this post on by. Nothing to see here.

Just thinking here... It's obvious Obama hates Clinton by the way he treated her throughout the primary. But he probably is genuinely happy that she’s being forced to campaign some with him and create this whole image of “unity” for this very reason: she’ll get the blame for everything that goes wrong. He is very good at pulling the victim card … nothing’s ever his fault … she’s the best scapegoat. He and his campaign did well in creating her to be the “monster” that she never was. That’s all the OS see in her. This is exactly why I don’t want her to run as his VP … well, that and also because he’s such a shady crook and I don’t want her associated with him.

Not that the Clinton’s hands are completely clean, I think it’s impossible for any politician’s hands to be completely clean, but Obama’s bringing this shady, crooked politician to a whole ‘nother level.

Welcome back!!!! That was a fast trip - or so it seemed to me! :)

Looking forward to your trip report!!!!

Lovely.

So, McCain was idiotic enough to make a remark in response to the rising of US cigarette imports to Iran by saying it “may be a way of killing them.”

You know, the country that is working on nukes? The country testing missiles the other day and threatening to hold back oil to the US if we did anything about it?

They, Iran, aren’t happy with that comment.

*sigh*

And why, again, did Hillary, the best candidate for the job get shoved unfairly out of the election?

Honestly, I’m a little surprised that he was crass enough to say that but it just illustrates that we don’t have a decent candidate to select from come November. Regardless, I’ll be voting for McCain - he’s still the best candidate out of our two selections for the job… and that’s pretty sad.

Please say that we have hope that Obama will continue to screw up and the Super Delegates will vote for Hillary at the convention … despite Obama’s and the DNC’s attempts to prevent it from happening at all costs.

You know, Obama’s location of birth is still up in air – he still refuses to produce a valid birth certificate – the one posted on his Fight the Smears website isn’t a valid birth certificate and it’s code, whatever, shows it to have been photoshopped. They are also still fighting McCain on his legitimacy to run for president … maybe in a couple of months both McCain and Obama will be declared ineligible to run for POTS and we get to start over with new candidates?

Right now both candidates seem to be on self-destruct mode but it's still early.

Please say that we have hope that Obama will continue to screw up and the Super Delegates will vote for Hillary at the convention … despite Obama’s and the DNC’s attempts to prevent it from happening at all costs
This sounds like a beautiful fantasy but I wouldn't count on it. Obama is the chosen one and has been for a while.

Welcome back DisUnc!!! Two weeks!!! I'm so jealous.

Welcome back DisUnc!!! Two weeks!!! I'm so jealous.

Thanks!!!!! :yay:

Hi everyone, I'm back and my Camping trip at Campland on the Bay Rocked:woohoo:....know we are getting ready to leave again on Sunday for a week at DL than 7 day Disney Cruise.....we cant wait:cool1::banana::cool1: Hi DISUNC how was your vacation....look forward to your trip report also:thumbsup2

So have not wtched the news much over the last 10 days but for bits and peaces.....sure lots of Flip flopping going around. Seems both candidates cant get it together. How frustrating. :sad2:

Did anyone see the CNN special report the other night on the Clinton's...it was really good. They are more powerful in congress/politics than I realized. It was impressive. Made me even more sure that she should have been the one the be our Dem candidate.

As for Jessie Jackson's comment that was no big deal to me. I could care less what he thinks about anyone. Obama was here today at the convention center but did not go. Don't think that I could stand being surrounded by all the love if ya know what I mean.....:grouphug:

If it was more low key than I would have liked to go but don't think I could handle all the chanting of "Yes we cans".....besides I have more important things to do like getting ready for our next trip:yay:

So what's up with everyone here...anyone else decide to vote Obama while I was gone :confused3 I am still in a none voting stage....no change here.

Welcome back to you too Got Disney! I hope that you're all rested.

I haven't changed my stance. I'm still disenchanted and frustrated and will likely vote for the Democrat. Nothing new. ;)

I find it amusing that you write "will likely vote for the Democrat" but don't really name him. ;)

I feel the same way - voting for the platform, as opposed to the person.

That is where I am torn....not voting at all or not voting for a Democrat.....no sooner does it pop in my head that i will vote for Obama does it pop right back out. I cant seem to get myself to vote for him. When I think of voting for McCain and there are some issues I agree with him on...does that pop out of my head saying well if I am going to vote I want it to be a Democrat.

I am looking forward to the debates. Maybe that will help. As for the moment I am staying non voting because that is where I seem to rest the most. Obama has not yet convinced me that he is the best of the 2 candidates...neither has McCain. For us Hillary supporters we have 2 crummy choices.....so what do we do popcorn:: I guess we have to sit back and wait to see how it all unfolds. Obama is all over the map flip flopping...nothing wrong with that except that he is suppose to be a new kind of politician...and know his biggest stance about pulling out of the war is sounding like "Well once I go over there and see than I will make my mind up on when and how and if by 2009.......geesh....

he was so animate about getting out and how he DID not vote on the war that he by the way could not vote on because he was not in at the time.....wonder how many of his voters dont realize that he did not cast a vote on that. Anyway....my choices of the 3...not voting, Obama, or McCain do not leave me happy at all....
