High School Class of 2016/College Class 2020

We put our deposit down at our state school, about 45 minutes away, so happy! It has a great reputation and my daughter is planning on a Health Science major with a Masters in OT as her goal. She met a girl with the same career in mind who was looking for a roommate, and she seems really nice and normal, says she isn't into partying (yay), so I hope that will work out!

My DD is going to another admitted students day at a different school tomorrow. I told her it was not affordable (they gave us loans and called it financial aid). She wants to see it anyway. She says if she likes it, we can appeal the award. Honestly, they'd need to come up with at least $20k for me to consider it-not going to happen. She's just driving herself (and me into the bargain) crazy.

She got in to one of her top choices; they gave her money; why are we still debating this?

Is that one affordable for you? I'm sorry if I missed an earlier post, but did she change her mind about the top choice school you just mentioned?

Here's what I think is going on: her top choice is a fantastic school with amazing academics. It is, however, in the middle of no where, a 7-8 hour drive from home assuming no serious traffic. We can just about swing it financially, but it will be a stretch.
Second choice is a very good school with lovely, friendly students, but the academic reputation is good but not excellent. It is farther away but in a big city and easy to get to by plane. We can afford it with just a little belt tightening.
Third school gave no money and we cannot afford it as it stands right now. Its main attraction is the fact that it's in a city and only 20 minutes away. It has respectable academic reputation but not stellar. It's also much bigger than the other two.

Punkin, have a discussion with her and have her tell you again why she chose to apply at the schools she did. What things did she really love about each of them? What were her misgivings (if any)? Remind her that she applied to these places for a reason, and she can be happy at any one of them. Help her to make the responsible decision that she probably knows she needs to make.

Sometimes, we want them to be able to be the ones that are the final decision-makers so much that we don't give them the guidance they are asking for. Be frank about the financial realities of her choices. She might like a particular school for four years, but if she has to pay big bucks for years upon years after graduation because the school really wasn't affordable, she needs to know the reality of that choice.

I hate, hate that it comes down to $$$ in most cases, but that is the cold truth. Good luck to her and you!!

I suppose if she really loves the local school tomorrow, we can ask for a review of the financial aid award. I'd need at least 20k to make it work. I have had the finances talk. She knows it's a no go without money.

Does she know her intended major yet? I know this often changes, I just wondered how the schools matched up according to her plans for the future?

My DDs high school just did "Every 15 Minutes" and 2 of her good friends were in it and one was of the ones that died, the other was Medivac out but survived. I was just wondering if any of your kids school does it. It made a great impression on my DD, not seeing the "actual" crash because she said it was a little bit too much, but today's ceremony.

No. She really wants to study everything. All the schools she applied to have significant distribution requirements/common core so she will have time to explore.

I do think we're inching toward a decision. (Fingers and toes crossed). The issue seems to be that she's not ready to leave me (ready to leave home-she hates this area, but not me). I told her to follow the academics and everything else will fall into place.

DNiece's school is having it tomorrow. When DDs' school did it, they were really impressed by it.

I think we have a tentative decision. Yay!!! DD says she will probably deposit on Monday.

She says she's apathetic at this point and just wants some decision made to get on with it. I think her sister had a talk with her and pushed her in a particular direction. Well, sisters can get away with things parents never could.

That's great! So which school is it?

So sorry! Didn't mean to be nosy, lol!
I should have asked which type (that you had mentioned) did she choose (her top choice, second, etc...)

Be nosy. I don't mind telling anyone on the thread, but it is still a public forum.

As we expected Carnegie Mellon gave us no money.. $67k a year. This would have been so much easier if she had not gotten in. Now she is stuck between RIT and Binghamton.. maybe Northeastern.. Ugh..

Ouch! Good luck with your decision. Both rit and binghamton are great schools. She'll be fine at either. I will say Rochester is a much nicer area.

Wow.. Never heard anyone call Rochester "nice". :) although we like it. RIT is very close to home and tons of kids from her HS go there, which is not a plus for her. Yes, this time next year we will have forgotten all about it (hopefully) but it stings to realize that hard work doesn't always pay off. Seems you need to be mighty rich, or willing to sell your future to go there. Very unfortunate for deserving kids without a huge trust fund. Fortunately she does have other great options, and can graduate debt free from the other two.
